This thesis is an analytical study of Symphony No.4 by Charles E. Ives, a pioneer of American comtemporary music and a representative composer of experimentalism.
Ives has solidified his acclaimed reputation in American music as Igor Stravinsky once said, "the great anticipator" in his review. His reputation continues to grow posthumously, and by his centenary in 1974 he was recognized worldwide as the first composer to create a distinctively American art music.
Since then his music has been frequently performed and recorded and his reputation has broadened further, resting less on his innovations and nationality and more on the intrinsic merits of his music. Ives opened a new path for American music style and world by developing his original musical techniques.
The first of Ives's major works to appear in performance and publication, such as movements of the Symphony No.4, were highly complex, incorporated diverse musical styles and made frequent use of musical quotation. Among many works by Ives, Symphony No.4, which is apart form the tendency of common symphony and in which diverse musical expressions persued by Ives harmonize well, is probably his representative work.
The first half of this study describes the life and musical style of Ives for general understanding of his works and compositional techniques. The latter part is focused on the analysis of Symphony No.4.
