중소도시 풍경을 통해 나타난 심상의 발현

Abstract

본 논문은 중소도시의 낮 시간대의 풍경을 소재로 작업한 2005년에서 2009년까지의 작업들 중 2009년 4월에 있었던 개인전 ‘Afternoon's Montage'에 전시된 본인의 작품을 중심으로 작업의 내용과 표현 형식을 분석한 것이다. 현대사회는 급격히 변화하면서 사회 구성원들로 하여금 끊임없이 생산과 소비를 요구하는 시스템으로 정착되어가고 있다. 현대인들은 완전한 하나의 사회 구성원으로 성장하기 위해, 또 자기에게 주어진 책임을 다 하기 위해 오늘도 고군분투하고 있다. 빠르게 돌아가는 이런 현대사회 속에서 자신들의 삶의 의미가 흔들리고 현기증을 느끼며 그로 인해 따뜻하고 한가로웠던 유년 시절의 기억을 동경하는 것은 인지상정의 이치가 아닐까 생각한다. 본인이 ‘Afternoon's Montage'란 주제로 작업한 연작들은 유년기시절의 삶의 풍경들을 무대 세트처럼 상징성을 띄고 있는 단순화된 색면의 구조로 해석하여 표현한 것이다. 이는 유년기의 따스하고 애잔한 삶의 심상을 통해 현대를 살아가는 황량함과 불안을 극복하고자하는 치유의 역할로써 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 일련의 과정이다. 또한 중심지역이 아닌 주변지역 즉, 중소도시의 지역성과 오후 시간대가 가지고 있는 시간성에서 나타나는 여러 감정들에 주목하여 표현하였는데 이것은 현대사회가 가지고 있는 하나의 시대상이며 또한 향수를 자극하는 매개로 표현된다. 경제성장으로 물질적 풍요와 함께 급격하게 변화한 한국사회는 대도시를 중심으로 빠르게 변화해 갔고 중소도시 역시 긍정적으로든 부정적으로든 대도시와 맞물려 변화해갔다. 경제성장의 인프라가 잘 구축되어진 중심지역은 빠르게 인구증가를 한 반면 주변지역들은 그와는 반대로 인구가 급격히 감소되는 현상이 나타났고, 주목받지 못하고 잊혀 진 장소가 되었다. 현대인들의 -시선 밖의 풍경이 되어버린- 장소는 본인이 겪었던 가족들의 죽음과 급작스런 주변 환경의 변화에 따라 나타나는 정체성 혼란과 함께 유년시절의 대가족이 주는 든든함과 따스함을 배경으로 한 풍경의 기억이 오버랩 되면서 따뜻하며 정적이고 또한 정체되어 있는 모습을 보이는 동시에 현재의 불안과 황량함이 공존하며 나타나고 있다. 예술가의 모든 작품은 시대상을 반영 하며 미처 자각하지 못한 어떤 종류의 감정을 환기시키며 수면위로 떠올리는 역할을 한다. 본 논문에서는 현대사회에 나타나는 일련의 현상들이 본인의 작품에서 어떻게 표현되는지를 보여주고, 거기에서 오는 작가의 심상이 대중과 공감하며 소통 할 수 있는지에 대해 연구하였다. 그리하여 본 논문에서는 작품형성 배경으로써 예술가와 공간에 대한 유기적 관계에 대해 살펴보고 현대사회의 중심지역과 주변지역의 변화 즉, 이촌향도 현상과 이로 인한 갈등, 인간부재 현상 등 을 논하며 중소도시에서 나타나는 사회현상이 본인의 그림에는 어떠한 상징적 의미로 나타나고 있는지를 연구하였다. 그리고 작품에 내재되어 있는 유년기에 대한 향수와 일상에의 주목, 그 표면적 이미지를 통한 심상의 발현에 대해 논하였으며, 에드워드 호퍼(Edward Hopper)와 데이비드 호크니(David Hockney)의 작품세계를 통해 본인 작업과의 유사성과 차이점을 짚어보며 차별화를 연구하였다. 조형적으로 회화의 평면적 공간구성의 요소인 빛과 색채에 주목하여 분석하고, 무대장치적인 공간구성의 효과와 그 의미에 대해 연구하였다. 본 논문의 다각적 접근을 통해 이미지의 범람과 다양한 미술형식이 출몰하는 21세기를 살아가는 작가로서 순수회화라는 매체를 통해서 삶의 진실에 더욱 접근하고, 개별성과 고유성을 획득하기 위해 고민하여 작품의 문제점과 개선방법을 모색하고 앞으로 진행할 작업에 새로운 가능성을 찾기 위한 기회로 삼고자 한다.|The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents and expressive forms of the researcher's works featuring the day-time landscapes of small & medium cities for the period from 2005 to 2009, focusing on the works exhibited at researcher's solo exhibition 'Afternoon's Montage' held in April, 2009. As our contemporary society is changing rapidly, it is being established as a system requiring its members to produce and consume incessantly. People struggle for themselves to grow into perfect members of the society, performing the obligations given to them. In such a rapidly revolving contemporary society, it may be a common human nature that we feel dizzy for the meaning of our life being shaken, while longing for our warm and idle childhood. In researcher's series of works titled '‘Afternoon's Montage,' the landscapes of life during researcher's childhood are interpreted and expressed as simplified color-fields symbolic like stage sets. The works may well represent a series of processes pursuing researcher's identity in an effort to overcome a desolate and uneasy sense of the contemporary life by revealing the warm and pathetic images of the childhood. In addition, the researcher paid attention to and expressed the various emotions evoked from the locality, not the central but peripheral region, namely, the small & medium cities as well as the time-frame 'day-time.' In short, the works reflect a historic image of our contemporary society, while being expressed as the medium stimulating the nostalgia. The Korean society, particularly the affluent metropolitan cities owing to the economic growth are changing rapidly. Influenced by the metropolitan cities, small and medium cities have been changing resulting both positively and negatively. The central regions equipped with the infrastructures for economic growth have attracted the population swiftly, while the peripheral regions have lost their population and gradually being forgotten. People's places - the landscapes outside the eyesight - are their identity as their people disappear suddenly and surrounding environment changes rapidly. Although they may look warm, static and stagnated, co-existing with the current fear and desolation, they may be overlapped with the memory of the landscapes against the background of solid and warm large family during childhood. This study discusses how a series of phenomena of our contemporary society are expressed in the researcher's works and how images sympathize and communicate with the audience. To this end, the researcher reviews the organic relationship between the artist and the space as a background of the works, and then, discusses the changes of central and peripheral regions in our contemporary society, focusing on people's migration from rural areas to cities, the conflicts and inhuman condition. It also examines what symbolic meaning the social phenomenon of small and medium cities has in researcher's works. Then, the researcher discusses the nostalgia of childhood inherent in researchers' works, attending to the every-day life, and revelation of the images. In addition, the researcher reviews Edward Hopper's and David Hockney's worlds of art to identify the difference and similarity between their works and the researcher's ones. Furthermore, the researcher analyzes two-dimensional spatial elements of painting as well as the effects and meaning of the spatial composition like stage set. All in all, the researcher, as an artist living in the 21st century when images are flooding with diverse fine art forms, attempts to approach the truth of life through the medium 'pure painting,' and addresses the problems of researcher's works and explore their solutions for originality and uniqueness, and explores a new possibility for the researcher's future works.
