존 듀크의 연가곡 《바다로부터》(1962) 분석 연구

Abstract

This thesis is A Research of the five song of song cycle <From the Sea> composed by John Woods Duke(1899-1984). Lettered Duke divided the book of poetry <Rivers to the Sea> written by Sara Teasdale(1884-1933) who was the first female Pulitzer Prizes winner into five parts, then edited and reorganized it for the song cycle. The first song <All beauty calls you to me> expresses the longing for a lover, and shows the emptiness and loneliness by using impressionism modes and chords without the 3rd note. the second song <Listen, I love you> is about the better relationship between two people, having unified 8th note accompaniment pattern and simple dialogic style vocal melody. The third song <I am so weak a thing> has the story of the speaker’s singleness of heart in counterpoint between longing for a lover, and the description behind. The fourth song <All things in all the world can rest, But I> contains distress and anxiety of the speaker who can not take a rest, having feature of insecure hemiola rhythm accompaniment and long postlude. The last song <Oh, my love> displays the longing for the love to whom one wants to give his body and soul without hesitance. not only expresses a deeper longing than the first song but also forms a figure of beauty through a thick layered accompaniment and voice melody with a big leap. The characteristics of Duke’s art song based on the analysis of these five songs is as follows: First, reorganization of the lyric, second, atonal mark for a key, third, vagueness of a form, fourth, the detail expression of the poem and the last, the domination of the prelude music. Through the feature shown in the accompaniment part it was certain that Duke put piano and vocal melodies on an equal footing when he composed this song cycle. Therefore Duke’s ideas about art songs that he constantly tried to perfectly combine the poetry with music is clear.|본 논문은 존 듀크(John Woods Duke, 1899-1984)의 연가곡 《바다로부터》(From the Sea)를 분석하고 고찰한 것이다. 이 가곡집은 문학적 소양이 뛰어난 듀크가 미국의 시 부문 퓰리처상을 처음으로 수상한 여류시인 사라 티즈데일(Sara Teasdale, 1884-1933)의 시집 『바다로 흐르는 강들』(Rivers to the Sea)에 수록된 시를 5부분으로 나누어 편집해 재구성했다. 제1곡 〈모든 아름다움이 당신을 내게 부르고〉(All beauty calls you to me)는 멀리 있는 사모하는 이에 대한 그리움을 나타낸 곡으로, 인상주의 선법과 3음이 배제된 화음을 사용하여 그리움에 대한 공허하고 외로운 심정을 담아냈다. 제2곡 〈들으라, 내가 당신을 사랑함을〉(Listen, I love you)은 더 나은 곳으로 나아가는 둘의 관계를 나타낸 곡으로, 획일화된 8분음표 반주형과 간결한 대화체의 성악선율이 단조롭게 어우러진다. 제3곡 〈나는 연약한 존재예요〉(I am so weak a thing)는 화자의 일편단심 사랑을 그린 곡으로, 사모하는 이에 대한 사랑과 그 이면의 묘사가 대비를 이룬다. 제4곡 〈세상의 모든 것들은 쉴 수 있네, 나를 제외하고는〉(All things in all the world can rest, but I)은 휴식을 취할 수 없는 화자의 괴로움과 불안함이 담긴 곡으로, 불안정한 헤미올라 리듬의 반주형과 긴 후주가 특징적이다. 제5곡 〈오, 내 사랑〉(Oh, my love)은 육신과 영혼을 내어주어도 아깝지 않은 사모하는 이에 대한 그리움이 나타나는 곡으로, 두터운 노트의 피아노와 도약 폭이 큰 성악선율이 1곡보다 더욱 짙어진 그리움을 표현하며 수미상관의 구조를 이룬다. 5곡의 분석을 바탕으로 정리한 그의 가곡의 특징은 첫째로는 텍스트의 재구성, 둘째로는 조성의 무조적 표기, 셋째로는 형식의 모호함, 넷째로는 시의 세밀한 음악적 표현, 다섯째로는 전주의 곡 지배로 귀결된다. 반주부에 나타나는 특징을 통해 그가 피아노와 성악선율을 동등한 선상에 놓고 작곡하였음을 알 수 있으며 본 가곡집을 통해 시와 음악의 완전한 결합을 이루려 끊임없이 노력했던 듀크의 예술가곡에 대한 이상을 잘 살펴볼 수 있다.
