일상으로서의 바다를 통한 심상 연구 -본인의 작품을 중심으로-

Abstract

본 논문은 대학원 석사학위 청구 논문으로서 2003년부터 2004년 사이에 제작된 본인의 작품들 중 석사 학위 청구전 [휴(休) 그리고 시간의 깊이]에 발표한 작업을 설명하고 동기와 평가를 중심으로 내용적(內容的), 조형적(造形的) 측면을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 풍경은 낯익은 것이기에 바쁜 일상 속에서 쉽사리 스쳐간다. 하지만 어느 순간 풍경은 몹시 낯선 것이 된다. 문득 올려다 본 하늘, 바람에 살짝 흔들리는 나뭇잎, 처마 끝으로 떨어지는 빗줄기. 짧게나마 시선을 빼앗긴 우리는 시간이라는 맹렬한 흐름에서 한걸음 비켜나 침잠한다. 이것이 바로 본인이 빚어내는 휴(休)이다. 과제는 판(版)이라는 제한된 공간에 자연이라는 거대한 풍경, 그것도 일상적인 풍경을 담아서 낯익음과 낯설음을 공존시키는데 있었다. 따라서 본인은 바다, 배, 그리고 그림자를 내용으로 차용했다. 바다가 무한(無限)과 순환(循環)이라는 자연의 이미지를 부각시켰다면 배는 작품에 일상성(日常性)을 더해주었다. 하지만 배는 그림자로서만 표현되었기에 실상을 깨고 낯설음이 되었다. 이 표현을 위해 조형적으로 밝음과 어둠의 극적인 대비를 주었다. 공간을 둘로 나누고 밝음에는 잠재라는 여백을, 어둠에는 과거와 추억이라는 그림자가 자리 잡게 했다. 각 작품은 판(版)을 여러 번 반복하여 부식시키고 깎아내고 뭉개는 과정으로 제작되었다. 이 과정을 통해 표현되는 대상물과 휴(休)라는 주제가 하나로 엮이도록 했다. 위의 과정을 작품을 통하여 구체적인 예를 들어 설명하였다. 본인은 본 논문을 통해 바다와 배의 이미지가 휴식이 필요한 현대인에게 관조와 여유를 줄 수 있기 바라며 이제까지 본인 작품을 돌아보는 계기로 삼아 작업 활동에 도움이 되고자 한다.|The purpose of this thesis is to apply for Masters degree by evaluating my works from 2003 to 2004. Namely, the work is called [Peace and Depth of Time] and I will discuss the drive behind this work through evaluating its content and form. Scenery is something people tend to ignore in their busy lives. However, at certain point, everyday scenery becomes something unfamiliar. For example, unexpected blue sky, slightly shaking leaves on the tree and rain droplets forming on the roof top may take your breath away. This is the same kind of feeling I tried to bring forth through this work. The most difficult task was to express the gigantic nature in a limited-sized board by mixing the familiar with that of unfamiliar. As a solution, I used the sea, a ship and a shadow to express these feelings. The sea represents limitless and ever-rotating image of nature and the ship adds air of everyday routine. Further, the ship was expressed in shadow to represent the unfamiliar. In order to produce this effect, I focused on lighting by creating a contrast between the darkness and the light. The space was divided into two sides, the light side representing a wide space of potential and the dark side representing shadows of past and recollection. Each piece was constructed by repeated corrosion and molding process. Through this process, I tried to connect the blurry images of the subject with the theme of peace into one. The above procedure is explained using specific examples from the work. In this thesis, I would like to provide peace and leisure to those who crave rest by expressing images of the sea and the ship. Moreover, I would like to use this opportunity to look back on my work to drive myself forward.
