익명의 물체와 가능세계의 회화적 연구

Abstract

This thesis explores the researcher’s visual investigation into the potential of “Anonymous Things” found within urban environments. The researcher collects everyday objects that are easily overlooked and visually reconstructs them to express their undiscovered possibilities. Throughout the research process, the theories of possible worlds by David Lewis, G.W.Leibniz, and Saul Kripke were examined. Focusing in particular on Lewis’s ‘Modal Realism’ to establish a connection between theory and the artwork. Lewis’s theory argues that all possible worlds hold equal existential value to the actual world, which resonates with the context of the researcher's work. From this perspective, this thesis analyzes the anonymous things in the researcher's artworks as part of various possible worlds. By contrast, Leibniz’s and Kripke’s theories present alternative views, which were analyzed comparatively. Leibniz’s possibilism is grounded in a theological perspective, claiming that the best possible world is chosen by God, while Kripke views possible worlds not as independent realities but as conceptual frameworks to explain real world.

This thesis examines the potential of anonymous things discriminated within the urban landscape, questioning whether these objects, as ‘unchosen possibilities’. So this unchosen possibilities can hold independent meaning within the possible world. Focusing on Lewis’s modal realism, it proposes that these objects can be interpreted as entities with unique narratives within different possible worlds. In the artworks, the objects convey both peace and a sense of unpromising stability, expressing the layered emotions of isolated existence and stimulating viewers’ imagination of unknown possible worlds. In exploring possible worlds through artistic methods, the thesis divides its approach into two primary aspects: “Story and Collection” and “Coexistence and Expression of Possible Worlds,” illustrating how anonymous things can visually represent new possibilities beyond the limitation of reality.

Lastly, the artworks are analyzed from two perspectives: the anonymous things within everyday urban landscapes and the external, otherworldly realms. The construction of these “Alternate World” reflects how anonymous things can interact as individual with diverse possibilities, forming new meanings. Through this process, the anonymous things emerge as part of a multi-layered world of possibilities that exceeds the bounds of reality.|이 논문은 도시 환경에서 익명의 물체들이 지닌 가능성에 대한 연구자의 시각적 탐구를 다룬다. 연구자는 일상 속에서 쉽게 지나칠 수 있는 사물들을 수집하고, 이를 시각적으로 재구성하여 ‘선택되지 않을 가능성’이 가진 잠재력을 표현하고자 했다. 연구 과정에서 데이비드 루이스, 라이프니츠, 솔 크립키의 가능세계 이론을 고찰했으며, 특히 루이스의 양상실재론을 중심으로 작업과 이론 간의 연결을 시도하였다. 루이스의 이론은 모든 가능세계가 현실과 동등한 존재 가치를 지닌다고 주장하며, 이는 연구자의 작품과 맥락이 닿아있다. 그런 관점에서 본 논문은 연구자의 작품 속 익명의 물체들을 다양한 가능세계의 일부로 분석해본 것이다. 나머지 두 이론은 양상실재론과 상반된 시각을 제시하며 라이프니츠는 신의 선택을 통한 최선의 가능세계를, 크립키는 가능세계를 현실을 설명하기 위한 상상의 틀로 보았다.

연구자는 익명의 물체들이 현실에서 선택되지 않은 가능성으로서 독립적인 의미를 가질 수 있는지에 주목한다. 루이스의 양상실재론을 바탕으로, 물체들이 현실의 틀을 넘어 각각의 가능세계에서 고유한 내러티브를 지닌 존재로 해석될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 작품 속에서 이들은 평온함과 함께 음산하고 불안정한 분위기를 동시에 담아내며, 관람자에게 고립된 존재의 다층적 정서를 전달하고 미지의 가능세계에 대한 상상력을 자극하고자 한다. 가능세계에 대한 조형 방법에서는 ‘스토리와 수집’, ‘가능세계의 공존과 표현’의 두 가지 측면에서 익명의 물체들이 새로운 가능성을 지닌 존재로 나타날 수 있음을 시각적으로 표현하였다.

마지막으로 도시의 일상적 풍경 속 익명의 물체들과 그 외부에 있는 세계, 이 두 가지 관점에서 작품을 분석하였다. 이외세계를 구축하는 방법은 익명의 물체들이 다양한 가능성을 지닌 존재로 상호작용하고 새로운 의미를 형성하도록 표현하였다. 이를 통해 익명의 물체들이 현실을 넘어 다층적인 가능성을 지닌 세계로 새롭게 다가오도록 하였다.
