이청준 소설 연구 : 인물의 갈등양상과 작가의식을 중심으로

Abstract

이청준은 체제와 권력, 제도적 환경에 의해 질서지워진 현실을 비판적 시각으로 인지하고, 외재적인 힘의 형태가 이질화시킨 두 개의 분할되고 단절된 세계를 가시적으로 소설 속에 노출시키고 있다. 이청준의 소설에는 두 개의 양분된 세계와 이분법적 사고가 등장한다. 하나의 세계를 화합할 수 없는 둘로 구분하는 것은 권력이고, 지배이데올로기의 힘이다. 이러한 단절된 현실인식은 유동적이고 불확실한 권력에 의해 '이성'의 세계, 그리고 '비이성'의 세계로 구분하여 파악할 수 있는데 그 이질화 간극에서 인간은 끊임없는 갈등과 주체의 분열을 경험하게 된다. 이청준 소설에 등장하는 병적이고 광기에 사로잡힌 인물들은 비정의 사회에서 사회에 편입하기 위해, 혹은 사회에서 탈출하기 위해 끊임없이 방황하며 비틀거린다. 그러나 그들의 그러한 갈등의 노력은 결국 비극적 상황을 맞이하며 실패하게 된다. 이러한 비극적 결론을 통해 작가는 세계에서의 어느 한편으로의 편입, 혹은 탈출도 근본적인 문제의 해결로 보고 있지 않다. 그는 본래 하나여야만 하는 것이 왜 분리되었는지를 문제 삼는다. 그리고 그 불합리한 구분의 원인을 발견하고, 양자의 세계를 합일하려는 의지를 소설의 주축으로 삼고 있다. 본고에서는 이청준의 소설에 나타난 세계를 권력으로 무장된 규칙으로 인해 분할되고 단절된 세계로 파악하고, 작가가 그 경계를 어떻게 허물려고 하는지에 주목하고자 한다. Ⅰ장에서는 생존작가이고 현재까지 왕성하게 작품활동을 하고 있는 이청준에 대한 기존 연구의 동향을 살펴보았다. Ⅱ장에서는 이청준 소설에 나타나고 있는 서로 소통되고 있지 않은 대립적인 세계인식을 고찰하고, 권력의 불합리와 지배 이데올로기로 이원화된 외부상황에서 분열되고 떨어져나간 인물들이 어떻게 현실을 접속시키고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이청준의 소설에 등장하고 있는 인물들의 갈등과 대응양상은 크게 두 가지고 구분하여 볼 수 있다. 보편적 질서에 편입하려는 인물, 그리고 비이성의 질서를 스스로 구축하여 탈출하려는 인물이 그것이다. 먼저 비이성으로 도피하려는 인물들로 ＜소문의 벽＞에 등장하는 박준을 볼 수 있다. 그는 부조리의 세계에서 탈출하여 스스로 미친자의 세계로 뛰어든다. 또한 박준을 우연히 돕게 되는 편집인 '나'는 보이지 않는 망상구조로 얽혀있는 권력의 실체를 발견하게 되고, 글을 쓴다는 것에 대한 자기 회의에 빠져든다. ＜괴상한 버릇＞의 '나'는 가사(假死)의 상태를 통해 현실의 부조리에서 빠져나가려 하고 ＜가면의 꿈＞에서의 명식 또한 가면을 쓰고 밤의 생활을 즐김으로서 거짓과 가식에서 벗어나려고 몸부림친다. ＜행복원의 예수＞에서의 '나'도 회개라는 가면을 통해 죄와 거짓에서 자유로울 수 있다고 생각하고 속임수를 통해 세상의 정의에서 탈주하려고 한다. 이러한 비이성의 탈출행각은 장인이 등장하는 ＜과녁＞, ＜줄광대＞, ＜매잡이＞에서도 동일하게 등장한다. 그들은 지독한 외고집으로 전통의 것을 지키려고 하는데 본고에서는 이러한 장인들의 외고집 또한 세상과 소통될 수 없는 화해되지 못한 인물들로 해석하였다. 다음으로 이성의 세계로 편입을 추구하는 인물들로는 ＜황홀한 실종＞의 윤일섭을 들 수 있다. 그는 현실에서 안과 밖을 구분하는 쇠창살을 느끼고 안락한 쇠창살의 안으로 유?鍍풉? 위해 끊임없이 노력한다. ＜낮은 목소리로＞에서 아버지는 공공연하게 편재되어 있는 '한탕'을 통해 풍속의 옷을 입고 싶어한다. 또한 ＜벌거벗은 임금님＞에서는 사장의 비밀행각을 알게된 운전사가 자신의 직장에서 쫓겨나지 않기 위해 비밀을 누설하고 싶은 자신의 욕망과 사투를 벌인다. ＜굴레＞에서의 주인공은 기업이라는 거대한 공동체에 안락하게 편입하기 위해 노력한다. 그러나 이청준 소설에서 편입, 혹은 탈출의 방법을 통해 세상에 대응하려는 인물들은 결코 모두 성공하지 못하고 좌절하고 있다. 그들은 모두 비극적 종말을 맞이하고 현실에서 한계를 느끼며 좌절과 절망을 반복할 뿐이다. Ⅲ장에서는 작가 이청준이 이러한 절망의 인물들을 통해 무엇을 이야기하려고 하는지 그의 작가의식에 대해 살펴보았다. 즉, 그가 추구하는 세계관은 합일의 세계관이며, 이항대립의 경계를 무화시키고 하나로 합일시키려는 것임을 고찰하여, 작가가 어떻게 작품을 통해 세상의 경계를 허물어내고, 종합에의 의지를 어떤 양상으로 실현하고 있는지 살펴보았다. ＜비화밀교＞에서 작가는 허물많고, 단절된 세계가 어떻게 함께 공존하고 화해를 이뤄낼 수 있는지 진지하게 고민한다. 또한 ＜지배와 해방＞과 ＜인문주의자 무소작 씨의 종생기＞를 통해 질서의 무화와 통일성에 대해 이야기한다. ＜벌레이야기＞에서는 화해의 전제인 용서의 문제가 구체적으로 제시되어 있으며, ＜자유의 문＞에서는 절대선과 실천선의 문제와 공존에 대해 이야기하고 있다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 본고는 이청준이 끊임없이 이야기하고 있는 현실의 불합리와 인물들의 갈등, 그리고 결국은 추하고 절망스런 현실의 공간일지라고, 그 현실을 딛고서야 완성될 수 있는 화해와 공존, 그리고 초월의 의식을 통해 작가 이청준의 세계관에 보다 가깝게 다가설 수 있을 것이다.|Lee cheong-jun face up to reality that is ordered by power structure, systematic environment with critical view point. Also, he does to express the two world that is divided by external force in his work. There are the segmentalized world and divided thought (dichotomy) in Lee cheong -jun's novel. It is the power and the ideology that make not to harmonize one world. Such a cut awareness against actuality is fluxionary. We can grasp that this is separated to the rational world and to the irrational world by uncertain power. Also, through this gap human sometimes experiences ceaseless discord and polarization of self. Within Lee cheong-jun novel, the madness and abnormal characters wander to admit in society or to get away on society constantly. But their effort always fail tragically. Writer finds fundamental method to solve the problem that is desire to remove to actual community from another society or to escape from society through such tragic conclusion. He wonders about the reason why the origin is detached. And he finds causing of irrational division and he expresses will to unify the separated world in his work. In this treatise, I premise the world within his novel was cut and was segmentalized by done rule. And then I want to find the method how writer pulls down the boundary that was segmentalized. In 1 chapter, I researched bygone the reports for him who is alive writer, and write work until present. In 2 chapter, I investigated into a concept of the opposed world that is not had mutual understanding each other by the irrational power and the ideology, and a method that characters who is separated from a real try to connect at real again. It is classified into two that characters' discord and confrontation method to appear to Lee cheong-jun's novel. One is the character who wants to reenter to universal order, another is character who try to escape from the irrational world that themselves make. First, there is Park jun that is a person to escape from the irrational world in ＜The wall of rumor＞. He gets away from the world of irrationality, enters to the rockheads' society himself. Also, 'I' who help Park jun accidentally find the substance of power that get bound up by structure that can not look. And then 'I' doubt writing. In ＜The strange habit＞, 'I' want to escape from the actual irrationality through state of lie death. In ＜The dream of mask＞, Myung-sik tries to get away from lie and hypocrisy through wearing the mask and enjoying the night life. In ＜Jesus in the happy garden＞, 'I' believe that 'I' can be free with the mask that is repentance, so 'I' try to get away from the justice of the world. There is escape from the irrational world that in ＜The target＞, ＜The performer on the line＞, ＜The falcon hunter＞ even if equally. They are vicious pig-headed person who is going to protect the tradition. In this treatise, I analyzed that causing of their stubbornness, they can not reconcile with the world. By next time, In ＜The enraptured disappearance＞, there is Yoon il-seop that is a person try to enter to the rational world. He feels an iron bars that divide inside and outside in actuality, and then he tries constantly to enter toward the comfortable inside, not outside of iron bars. In ＜The low voice＞, the 'father' wants to wear dress of manners through syndrome which desire to get many things at a time. Also, In ＜The striped king＞, the driver who know president's the secret fights between desire which want to tattle and desire which want not to fire. In ＜The bridle＞, the protagonist tries to enter to the huge community such as corporation comfortably. But, in Lee cheong-jun's novel all characters who confront against the world with a method of enroll or escape fail and miscarry. They feel limit and despair continually through tragic ending. In 3 chapter, I studied writer consciousness which he wishes to show through persons' despair. That is, it is a consolidated view of the world that he seeks. Also, I studied how writer pulled down the border of binomial confrontation with his work, how writer realizes his will to integrate in his work. In ＜비화밀교＞, the writer agonizes about method how the segmentalized world can be coexistence together and can be reconciled. Also, he talks about unity with ＜The domination and the liberation＞, ＜The autobiography of Mr. 무소작 who is humanist＞. In ＜The story of worms＞, there is concrete talk about pardon that is proposition of reconciliation. In ＜The door of freedom＞, he writes the problem of co-being that absolute good and practice good. Through this research, I intend the comprehension of discord between irrational actuality and persons, which writer, Lee cheong-jun, expresses. As well as I intend the idea that reconciliation and coexistence must be after overcome, even if it is ugly actuality, and I expect to approach writer's view of the world with an awareness of aloof.
