은유에 의한 영어 동사 come의 의미 이해

Abstract

본 논문에서는 학습자의 인지적 사고 과정은 고려하지 않은 채, 한 어휘가 갖는 다양한 의미들을 반복적, 기계적으로 암기하고 있는 우리 나라의 외국어 학습 상황에서 학습자들로 하여금 유의미하게 어휘를 습득 할 수 있는 방법을 제시하는 의미에서 이동 동사 come이 여러 의미들로 확장되는 과정에서 발견되는 연관성과 체계성을 인지적 사고 과정을 기본으로 하는 인지 언어학에서 중요하게 다루고 있는 은유적 개념으로 설명해 보고자 한다. 과거에 은유나 환유는 언어 자체만의 문제 즉, 문학에서 장식을 위한 도구로서 은유나 환유를 비 일상의 언어로 간주해왔다. 그러나 1970년대를 기점으로 그러한 전통적인 은유관을 전면적으로 거부하면서 은유와 환유는 인간이 가지는 기본적인 개념 체계이며, 우리의 사고, 태도, 행동에 영향을 미친다라고 주장하는 인지 언어학이 서서히 고개를 들기 시작하였다. 이러한 견해를 기초로 하여 여러 학자들은 은유와 환유가 일상 언어 속에서 쉽게 발견되고 사용되어지고 있음을 그들의 논문에서 활발히 증명해 오고 있다. 이러한 인지 언어학적 관점으로 이동 동사 come이 표현하는 시간의 이동, 상태 변화, 과정, 영역 이동과 같은 추상적인 의미들은 은유적 개념으로 보다 쉽게 이해될 수 있음을 본 논문의 본론에서 증명해 보이고자 한다. 이러한 은유와 환유에 의한 다의어의 의미 이해는 외국어 학습자로 하여금 보다 의미 있고 체계적으로 어휘의 의미를 습득할 수 있게하여 학습 효과를 높일 수 있고, 또한 실생활에서 그 활용도를 높이는데 큰 도움을 줄 것이다.|Since the 1970's, cognitive linguists have motivated the studies of metaphor and metonymy. In the view of cognitive linguistics, metaphor and metonymy affect our daily thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors as the basic conceptual system of human brain. Also, they have been often used and found in common life. The purpose of this study is to show that many meanings of English verb come are extended through the metaphorical progress systematically and they have relations with each other cognitively. The basic concept of come is a moving entity traveling along a path, with a starting and ending point. From this basic concept, the meanings of come are extended as the following metaphors: 1. Time is a moving entity, 2. Change is movement in space, 3. Progress is movement, 4. Development/Success is movement forwards, 5. Idea/Concept/Thought/Story is a moving object, 6. Good/Heath/ High status/Respect is Up; Bad/Sickness/low status is Down, 7. Moving in an abstract domain is movement in space. In conclusion, this study recommends the use of metaphor as one way of learning or teaching vocabularies. Also, it is helpful for the nonnative students to understand the various meanings of a vocabulary more easily and effectively.
