원융(圓融)의 이미지를 이용한 도자조형연구

Abstract

현대에 사는 사람들은 빠르게 흘러가는 일상 속에 바쁘게 살아간다. 바쁜 일상에 지친 현대인들은 고요한 자연을 찾아 휴식을 취하거나, 꽃을 꽂고, 향을 피우고 차를 나누는 등 사색의 시간을 갖고자 한다. 연구자는 공예가 일상생활 속에서 기능성과 심미성이 동시에 충족하며 사용자의 삶을 윤택하게 하는 데 기여한다고 생각한다. 또한 이 두 가지 기능이 조화롭게 균형을 가질 때 공예의 가치가 더 빛을 발한다고 여긴다. ‘원융(圓融)’은 불교에서 비롯된 말로 서로 다른 존재가 타고난 속성을 잃지 않으면서도 서로 어울려 하나를 이룬 경지를 일컫는다. 본 논문에서 도입된 원융의 개념은 두 가지로 설명할 수 있다. 하나는 기능성과 심미성의 두 가지 기능이 하나의 도자작품 속에 균형을 가지고 잘 융화됨을 가리킨다. 다른 하나는 절제된 형태와 동심원으로 조각된 잔잔한 결이 작품 안에서 조화롭게 융화되는 것을 의미한다. 원과 원이 얽매임 없이 하나의 형태를 이룬 동심원은 원융의 이미지를 시각화하기에 적합하다고 생각한다. 동심원은 하나의 중심에서 원이 중첩되면서 밖으로 퍼져나가는 형상으로 방향성을 지님으로써 발전과 전진의 상징이 됨과 동시에 원이 가진 완전성과 조화로움의 상징도 유지한다. 작품 제작은 물레성형을 기본으로 하였으며, 그릇을 빚는 동안 무수히 생겼다가 사라지는 동심원의 흔적들을 굽을 깎는 과정에서 굽칼로 그릇의 표면에 새김으로써 유약이 자연스럽게 고이면서 태토와 형태와 장식이 융화되도록 하였다. 본 연구의 시작품들은 간결한 형태의 화기가 주를 이루며, 향꽂이와 문진 등 백자의 간결한 형과 형을 따라 조각된 동심원문이 유약과 함께 원만하게 융화됨으로써 원융의 이미지를 조형적으로 표현하였다. 기물의 표면에 새겨진 잔잔한 동심원은 푸른빛 유약을 사용함으로써 고임을 시각적으로 극대화하여 끝임 없이 퍼지는 잔잔한 파동을 연상하게 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 제작된 작품들은 현대인의 바쁜 일상 속에서 온기를 느낄 수 있는 감성의 사물이 되기를 기대한다.| Modern people live busy lives. Modern people, worn out from their hectic lives, try to relax quietly in nature or enjoy their own time of meditation with tea, incense, or flowers. The researcher thought that handcrafts contribute to the enhancing people’s lives by satisfying both the functionality and aesthetics of everyday lives. Also, when these two characteristic are in harmony, the true value of handcraft shines even more.

‘Wonyoong’ a term from Buddhism that refers to a state in which two different beings harmonize with each other to make a whole without losing each’s individual characteristics. The concept of wonyoong applied in this paper can be explained in two ways. One refers to the state of two characteristics, functionality and aesthetics, balanced and harmonized. The other is the state of a calm pattern divided into humble concentric circles harmonized together in one piece. Concentric circles that are neatly in one form without being tangled together is the best way to visualize the image of wonyoong. In concentric circles, there is one center and all the circles, overlapping with one another, spread outwards. This directionality represents development and progress and also the perfectness and harmony of a circle.

The piece is based on jiggering. While making the bowl, the mark of concentric circles that repeatedly appear and disappear is carved on the surface when burning. Then, the enamel naturally pools together and the clay and form and decorations become harmonized. The trial products of this study are mostly weapons in a brief form. These products follow the concise form of the white porcelain, for example and incense holder or paperweight, and the carved concentric circles smoothly harmonize with the enamel, expressing the image of wonyoong. By using blue enamel, the pooling in the surface of the item is highlighted, like light waves spreading continuously.

I hope that the pieces made through this study become emotional items where one can feel the warmth within people’s hectic lives.
