This study, as a study on the awareness and use of childcare support policies by working mothers with infants, aimed to look into the actual use of childcare support policies in Korea and investigated how the awareness and use of childcare support policies along with the socio-demographic variables and the job variables of working mothers are changed. Also, by analyzing the awareness of childcare support policies and the influencing factors on utilization, the study expects that the results and findings of the study can be used as previous research data in designing the reinforcement plan of childcare support policies.
The study carried out a questionnaire survey for 237 working mothers with infants, and the contents of the questionnaire was designed based on related documents by modifying necessary parts in accordance with the purpose of study.
First, from the results of the research on the awareness and use on childcare support policies, in general, the working mothers who are using day care institutes appeared to have higher degree of awareness and especially it was likely to be higher in the working mothers of low income who are using day-care institutes.
Second, from the results of the research on the awareness and use of childcare support policies by job variables, the working mothers who are working in the places with lower working environments showed higher awareness of childcare support policies relatively to the working mothers who are office workers or working in large corporations. The use of childcare institute showed significant difference by job classification, and the internal day-care institute in work place had an influence on it. The payment of nursing fee was significant in the form of work and form of employment. From the result of research on the relationship with the use of maternity leave and childcare leave, the childcare support policies are taken effect in only good companies with good working environments; thus not every working mother can take advantages.
Third, from the results of the research on the relationship with the awareness and use of childcare support policies, the national, public and district day-care institutes are more likely to be aware of childcare cost relief system; and for the nursing fee, the group who are paying equal to or less than 250,000 won appeared to be most likely to be aware of the childcare cost relief system. This implies that the low income families are usually the ones who pay less nursing fee and thus are subsidized by childcare cost relief system; therefore they are more aware of these systems. Regarding the relationship between the type of day-care institutes and the nursing fee, use of maternity leave and use of childcare leave, for the variables affecting on the use of maternity leave, the type of day-care institutes and nursing fee showed significant results. From the types of day-care institutes, the internal day-care institute in work place took the largest percentage. As for the nursery fee, the group paying 260,000won ~ 600,000won took the largest percentage. On the other hand, for the use of childcare leave, both variables of the type of day-care institutes and nursing fee were not significant.
Fourth, from the results of the research on the relative influence of socio-demographic variables and job variables on actual use of childcare support policies, for the influence on the awareness of childcare cost relief system, only household income was significant in model 1 while household income, job classification and working hours per week were significant in model 2. From the results of the research on the influence of socio-demographic variables and job variables on nursery fee, both of model 1 and model 2 were significant. On the other hand, their influence on the use of childcare leave was not statistically significant.
