"여성 광기"의 의미 : 『오들리 부인의 비밀』과 『광막한 싸가쏘 바다』를 중심으로

영문초록: p. 95-96|남성이 권력의 핵심에 자리잡고 있는 가부장제 사회에서 그들은 자신의 권력 기반을 유지하고 강화시키기 위해 여성을 타자화시키는 계획을 오래 전부터 구상해 왔다. 그들은 여성으로부터 느끼는 두려움을 극복하고 자신의 욕구를 충족시키기 위해서 여성을 열등한 존재로 간주하였을 뿐 만 아니라 천사와 요부라는 상반된 이미지를 구상하여 여성을 억압시키는데 사용하였다. 남성은 그들이 만들어 놓은 성 역할을 충실하게 수행하는 여성을 천사로 묘사한 반면, 이것을 거부하거나 소홀하게 수행하는 여성을 괴물처럼 묘사하였는데, 그 이유는 남성들이 이러한 여성들을 자신들이 구축한 사회의 안정을 파괴하는 위험한 존재로 느꼈기 때문이다. 19세기에 활발하게 진행된 광기에 대한 연구 역시 남성들이 여성들을 타자화시키기 위해서 만들어 놓은 계획 중의 하나라고 볼 수 있다. 이것은 이성적인 행동과 광적인 행동을 구분 짓는 잣대가 인간의 존재론적 토대에 근거한 것이기보다는 "권력을 가진 이"들에 의해 형성된 주관적이며 편파적인 것이기 때문이며, 실제로 광기에 대한 많은 연구들이 여성을 대상으로 하여 이루어졌기 때문이다. 『오들리 부인의 비밀』 과 『광막한 싸가쏘 바다』 의 남자 주인공인 로버트 오들리와 에드워드 로체스터는 여성의 광기에 관한 지식을 이용하여 자신의 권력을 증폭시키는 인물이다. 두 남성은 남성 권력 사회에서 성인 남성에게 요구되는 주체로서의 자아를 세우지 못한 채 소설의 첫 부분에 등장하는데, 이것은 곧 그들이 권력관계에서 주체가 되기 위해 오들리 부인과 앙뜨와네뜨를 타자화시키는 원인이 된다. 자신에게 결핍되어 있는 것들을 소유한 여성으로부터 두려움과 컴플렉스를 느낀 로버트와 로체스터는 그러한 감정으로부터 벗어나기 위해서 뿐 만 아니라 가부장제의 인정받는 일원이 되기 위해 이들을 타자화시킬 계획을 꾸미게 되며 그들은 가부장제가 남성에게 부여한 여러 가지 권력 기제들을 이용하여 오들리 부인과 앙뜨와네뜨를 광녀로 규정하고 감금시키는 일을 성공적으로 수행하게 된다. 남성들이 광기의 행동으로 규정한 오들리 부인과 앙뜨와네뜨의 행동은 19세기에 형성된 광기의 담론으로 분석할 때 전형적인 광기의 모습으로 비춰지게 된다. 그러나 이러한 담론이 본질적으로 가부장적 가치관과 지식에서 형성된 것이기에 그들을 광녀로 규정짓는 사회적 · 의학적 담론은 그 타당성을 잃게 되며, 광기의 행동으로 규정된 그들의 행동을 다른 각도에서 해석해야할 필요성을 남기게 된다. 여성을 남성에 대한 타자가 아닌 실존적인 인간으로 본다면, 광기로 규정된 그들의 행동을 결코 그들에게 내재되어 있는 동물성이 발현된 것으로 볼 수 없게 된다. 오히려 우리는 여성의 광기를 여성들을 억압하는 권력체제로부터 그들이 자신의 정체성을 보호하기 위해 행한 자기 방어적인 행동으로, 그리고 그러한 체제에 공격을 가하는 저항의 몸짓으로 해석할 수 있게 된다. 더 나아가 여성의 광기는 여성 적대적인 가부장제 사회에서 자신의 존재가 갖고 있는 의미는 무엇인지, 그리고 과연 "나는 누구인가?"에 대한 질문에 해답을 찾게 되는 "우월한 정신"이 된다고 볼 수 있겠다.|Man has formulated a plan of making woman the Other to keep and strengthen his power in a male supremacist society for a long time. He not only regarded woman as an inferior existence to man, but also suppressed her by creating the extreme images of "angel" and "monster" for woman to overcome the fears which he felt from her and to satisfy his needs. The concept of madness in the 19th century can be one of the projects which man has drawn up to make woman the Other. This is for the reason that the standard which distinguishes insanity from sanity is the subjective and partial one made by a man of power, rather than on the basis of an ontological foundation, and that the studies of madness actually concentrated on female madness at that time. Robert and Rochester are the characters who exercise their own power given to them by society to oppress a woman and who build up their own power using their knowledge of female insanity. These two men show up in the first part of the story without establishing themselves as subjects, which is the reason that they must make Lady Audley and Antoinette the Other in order to be the subjects in the force relationships. Robert and Rochester feel fear and a complex from Lady Audley and Antoinette who have these attributes and many other things which they don't have, so they make a plan to make the female protagonists the Other, not only to be relieved of these feelings, but also to be recognized as a man of ability in a masculine society. For these reasons, they brand each woman as a mad woman and confine her by using their power mechanism. When we analyze the behaviors of these two women with the 19th century's psychoanalysis, they can seem to be typical insane behaviors because the Victorian psychiatrist defined a woman as a madwoman who does not satisfy her designated role and who violates the values of a patriarchal society. But when we see a woman not as the Other to a man but as an existential being, their behavior regarded as madness by men comes to have another meaning. Female madness can be a self-defensive mechanism which a woman comes to use to protect her identity from the oppression of the male-based power structure, and it can be an action of resistance to launch an attack against them. In addition, it can be a superior sanity with which a woman can find the answer to the question, "Who am I?" and the meaning of herself in a society hostile to a woman.
