- Abstract
- The system of honorifics which has close effect relation with social and customary phenomena should be stressed as necessary specially for learners. It was guided according to verbal etiquette by using role play, which was effective for teaching and guiding verbal etiquette and the system by enabling learners to approach substantial learning objectives by constructing scenes and playing roles centering on their own learning objectives.
This study first examined the system theoretically. The system displays a honorific attitude or treats an object. It is divided into a system of honoring the subject, a system of honoring the other party, a system of honoring the object and a system of honorifics by special vocabulary. And examining a manual for a high school curriculum and the high school textbook Korean Life showed that the activity at the level of confirming basic theories and the activity for acquiring knowledge accounted for high percentages.
Next, this study explored the concept and method of role play and what one should pay attention to in it. It presented as the stages for a role play class model recognizing a problem and preparing for it → fixing roles → performing role play → checking.
A system of honorifics was guided according to a role play class model in an actual class for the students in Grade 1. Giving the class indicated that the play was very effective to inducing learners to take interest in the class and actively participate in it. They had a chance of learning cooperation rather than competition. The class was significant in having provided them with a chance of applying a system of honorifics actively in their actual lives according to verbal etiquette through the activity of role play.
