The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ice therapy and Swedish massage on working women's girth of the lower body, edema, stress, body composition, self-perceived somatotype and self- perceived physical characteristics in a bid to provide some information on ways of helping working women keep on leading a healthy life.
The subjects in this study were 16 sales associates who were in their 20s to 40s and selected from the department stores in the city of Incheon. The selected salespeople had neither endocrine disorders nor skin allergy to salt and other particular products. They were explained about the purpose of this study and agreed to participate in this study. An experiment was conducted from January 3 to 28, 2011. The eight- member experimental group received Swedish massage 12 times during a four-week period of time, and then ice therapy and salt management were provided to that group. No particular action was taken to the control group of eight members.
The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 15.0. Statistical data on frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were obtained, and t-test and paired t-test were carried out to determine the effect of ice therapy and Swedish massage. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the working women who received ice therapy and Swedish massage showed a more statistically significant decrease in the girth of the lower body than the others who didn't, and the former's edema statistically significantly more subsided than the latter's.
Second, the working women who received ice therapy and Swedish massage were under statistically significantly less stress than the others who didn't.
Third, ice therapy and Swedish massage had little impact on the weight, body fat, BMI and body fat rate of the working women.
Fourth, the working women who received ice therapy and Swedish massage took a more positive view of their own somatotype and physical characteristics than the others who didn't.
Thus, it's found that ice therapy and Swedish massage were of use for reducing the working women's girth of the lower body, alleviating their edema and relieving their stress. Therefore ice therapy and Swedish massage are expected to boost working women's job efficiency and to be conducive to their health care
