아동과 청소년의 외모 및 신체만족과 심리적 특성간의 관계

Abstract

오늘날처럼 날씬한 몸매를 강조하는 사회 · 문화적 풍토에서는 점점 더 개인의 외모 및 신체만족 수준에 따라 우울, 불안, 자아존중감 같은 심리적 특성들에 미치는 영향이 심화될 것이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 외모 및 신체만족과 관련하여 예측되는 우울, 불안, 자아존중감의 심리적 특성들을 사춘기 이전의 아동 집단과 이후의 청소년 집단으로 구분하여, 외모 및 신체만족과 우울, 불안, 자아존중감간의 관련성을 파악하고 그에 따른 특성들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 또한, 이런 변인들간의 관련성에서의 각 집단의 성별 차이 및 발달적 차이를 비교해 보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 신체적인 측면이 자아상에 미치는 영향이 크고 따라서 외모가 갖는 중요도도 다른 시기에 비해 증가하는 사춘기를 전후하여 아동과 청소년이 겪는 심리적 어려움을 극복하기 위한 효과적인 개입의 기초자료로 활용될 것이다. 본 연구는 서울 및 경기 지역에 소재하고 있는 8개의 초등학교와 11개의 중학교를 대상으로 각 학교마다 초등학교 5 · 6학년과 중학교 2 · 3학년의 학급의 학생들에게 실시되었다. 본 연구 결과, 청소년 집단은 아동 집단에 비해 우울과 불안수준이 높고, 외모만족에서는 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 신체만족과 자아존중감이 낮게 나타났다. 각 변인들에 따른 성차는 청소년 집단의 여학생들이 남학생들에 비해 신체만족도가 낮은 것을 제외하고는, 아동 집단과 사춘기 집단 둘 다 각각의 변인들에 대한 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 마지막으로 외모만족 및 신체만족, 자아존중감, 우울 및 불안과의 관계를 경로분석 하였다. 그 결과, 아동과 청소년 집단의 구조방정식 모형은 모두 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 외모만족은 자아존중감에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았으나 신체만족은 자아존중감에 유의한 영향을 미쳤고, 자아존중감은 우울 및 불안수준에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 경로분석 결과는 자아존중감이 외모만족 및 신체만족이 우울 및 불안에 영향을 미칠 때 매개역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 각 집단간 경로계수간 차이를 검증한 결과, 청소년 집단에서는 외모만족이 신체만족으로 이어질 가능성이 아동 집단에 비해 높게 나타났고, 외모만족 및 신체만족이 자아존중감에 상당히 높은 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이런 결과는 아동의 연령이 증가함에 따라 변화하는 사춘기 특성이 잘 나타난 것으로, 사춘기 이후 특히 여학생들에게 있어서 신체적 변화는 민감한 요인으로 작용하며, 이것이 심리적 특성에 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.|These days in social-cultural mood favoring slim figure, it seems that the level of individuals appearance influences the psychological conditions like melancholy, anxiety and self-respect strongly. accordingly, this paper deals with the relationship between the level of one's satisfaction about appearance and the psychological traits like melancholy, anxiety and self-respect comparing adolescent group with childhood group. In addition to that, this paper covers how much the difference among sex and physical and mental development have an effect on relationship between appearance and the psychological traits. This paper will be used as fundamental data which can help boys and juvenile generation suffering from psychological distress in whose period they are easily influenced by their appearance. This study is based on the interview with elementary school fifth and sixth grade students and middle school second and third grade students in Seoul and Kyung-Ki province. This study tells us that adolescent group reveals high level of melancholy and anxiety and low level of satisfaction of one's appearance and self-respect in contrast with childhood group. Difference between childhood and adolescent group has no significant meaning except that girls are not easily satisfied with their appearance in contrast with boys. Finally, this study analyze the path about relationship between the level of one's satisfaction about appearance and the psychological traits like melancholy, anxiety and self-respect The result tells that structure equation model of childhood and adolescent group is pertinent. Face appearance satisfaction does not have significant on self-respect but figure appearance satisfaction does. self-respect has significant on the level of melancholy and anxiety. Additionally, path analysis results that self-respect works as media role when face and figure appearance satisfaction have significant on the level of melancholy and anxiety. As we verified that difference path coefficient between childhood and adolescent group, appearance satisfaction results in figure satisfaction statistically highly in contrast with children group and face and appearance satisfaction have an high effect on self-respect in adolescent group This output reveals the change of adolescent characteristics relating to age of children efficiently. This also tells us that especially girls among adolescent generation are susceptible to physical change and ultimately physical change can have impact on psychological traits.
