식물 관찰을 통한 심상표현 연구 : 본인 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 일상 속 마주친 식물을 관찰하며 느꼈던 심상에 대한 표현 연구를 토대로 기술되었다. 자칫 사소한 풍경으로 보일 수 있는 일상 속 식물들의 관찰을 통한 내면의 탐구를 주제로 2021년 대학원 작업과 2022년 ‘비주류의 정원’이라는 석사 학위 청구 전시, 그리고 2023년 상반기에 작업한 작품들을 바탕으로 서술되었다. 본인의 작업 과정은 일상을 관찰하며 오래 시선을 두고 심상을 대입하게 된 식물에서 의미를 찾아 풀어낸다. 연구자가 심상을 대입하며 집중하는 식물들은 주목받지 못하는 공간으로 나와지게 된 방치된 환경에 놓인 존재들이다. 연구자는 부정적인 환경 속에서 저마다 존재 자체가 가지고 있는 식물들의 에너지와 그 속에서 생성되는 주체적인 형상들을 수집하고 탐구한다. 연구자는 식물을 관찰하며 수집된 이미지들을 본인의 화면 속에서 새롭게 배치하여 위치를 설정하고 그들의 생명력을 시각화한다. 그리고 식물을 바라보는 연구자의 따뜻하고 긍정적인 시선을 포착하여 표현하는 과정들을 연구한다.

본론에서는 작품 형성 배경에 관해 서술하며 연구자의 작품 속 식물의 의미와 내용에 대해 알아보고 식물의 형상에 나타난 심상 표현을 연구한다. 연구자가 작업 속 식물의 의미를 어떻게 형성하는지 살펴보며 본인의 경험 안에서 어떻게 새롭게 이야기를 만들어 나가는지 연구한다. 연구자가 집중하는 식물은 방치된 식물들이다. 연구자는 주류의 공간에서 배제된 상황 속에서도 생생하게 펼쳐지는 식물들의 생명력에 집중한다. 그리고 버려진 화분과 식물들에 본인의 경험을 투영시켜 나간다. 이렇게 연구자는 본인이 식물을 바라보는 태도를 연구하며 본인의 작업 주제와 연결되는 의미를 찾을 수 있는 작품들을 살펴보며 본인의 작업과의 연관성을 찾는다. 다른 작가들이 대상을 바라보는 시선과 본인의 시선을 비교하며 화면 속에서 어떠한 심상들이 표현되며 식물들의 이미지가 그려져 나가는지 살펴본다.

This comprehensive exploration integrates work from a graduate workshop conducted in 2021, an exhibition titled "Garden of the Non-Mainstream" for a Master's degree candidacy in 2022, and a series of artworks developed in the first half of 2023. The researcher's methodological approach involves the examination of everyday plant life over extended periods, followed by the integration of mental imagery into these observations to decode the inherent symbolism within. The plants under st udy often find themselves situated in overlooked spaces, resulting in their exis tence within a neglected environment. These circumstances provide a unique r esearch perspective, as the researcher collects and examines the inherent energy within these plants and the subjective forms that emanate from this adverse context. A pivotal part of the research involves capturing, organizing, and co ntextualizing images from plant observations within the researcher's own artist ic framework, thus visually manifesting their vitality. In addition, the research method includes an examination of the researcher's empathetic gaze towards t hese plants, characterized by warmth and positivity. The main body of the paper delves into the backdrop of the artwork form ation, providing an in-depth examination of the significance and content of t he plants within the researcher’s work. A critical element of this research is understanding how the researcher constructs meaning within their art through their experiences and how new narratives are created within this context. The primary focus of the researcher’s gaze is on the often neglected plant life. Th e research particularly emphasizes the resilient vitality exhibited by these plant s, even in environments that are marginalized from mainstream spaces. It furt her explores the projection of the researcher’s personal experiences onto the a bandoned pots and plants. The research process involves an introspective eval uation of the researcher’s approach to observing plant life and a detailed ana lysis of the art pieces in which meanings related to the research topic can be identified. This involves drawing correlations between these identified works a nd the researcher’s own body of work. A comparative analysis is carried out between the researcher’s perspective and that of other artists in observing sim ilar subjects. This comparative study aids in understanding how different men tal images materialize and how images of plants are depicted within the art pieces.

The plants within the researcher’s art pieces are portrayed through various methods. The positioning of the subjects within the frame fluctuates, largely c ontingent upon the mental imagery evoked through the observation of each p lant. At times, plants are depicted as standalone entities, emphasized for their individuality, while at other times, they are intertwined with the backdrop, ex pressed as interconnected components of a larger organic body. Despite the a dversity of their surroundings, the researcher focuses on the plants’ resilient s pirit, capturing their life force through a diverse range of painterly techniques. The color palette of the researcher predominantly comprises bright hues and pastel tones, indicative of the researcher’s inherent mental imagery towards th e observed subjects. The plants under study, despite being in unfavorable con ditions, radiate a vibrant vitality that remains undiminished. This vitality is ca ptured through the use of bright colors and translated into unique expression s of the plants’ inherent energy. Techniques involving the use of repeating lin es to depict the plants’ form, overlaid with countless dots to form masses, ar e used to symbolize the plants’ resilience. Employing a variety of expressive methods, the researcher narrates diverse s tories of the plants within the neglected environment, eliciting imagery imbue d with warmth and brightness. By projecting personal experiences onto the fo rms of these plants, the researcher establishes a psychological connection, ther eby expressing a radiant energy that starkly contrasts with the adverse enviro nment. Future research will utilize various methods to analyze the process of internalizing and representing the forms of plants in stationary landscapes fro m daily life.
