Schubert(Franz Peter Schubert, 1797 - 1828) was born in Vienna, Austria and a composer, who added his own emotion to classical styles of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and expressed the characteristics of romantic music.
This study analyzed and considered Schubert's flute music, (D.802) on the theme of No.18 'Trockne Blumen' of his song cycle, 'Die Schone Mullerin'.
This music consists of an introduction, a theme and seven variations and as Schubert's first variations, which describe lyrical poems and express flute's characteristics, various composing techniques were used. Overall, this music expresses rich colors by applying romantic lyricism to classical styles and using free forms and structures.
In the theme, slurs, staccatos and ornaments were added to the beautiful and lyrical melodies of No. 18 'Trockne Blumen' of the original song cycle,'Die Schone Mullerin' to express the characteristics of flute and piano and an imitative technique was used to play a variation on tonality, beat, rhythm and melody.
Each variation is mainly composed of two parts and the introduction, variation VI and variation VII have a two-part form that a coda was added to. Also, the theme and variation I-variation V keep two-four time like the original vocal music and variation VII and variation VI were changed into four-four time and three-eight time respectively. The tonalities are focused on e minor and chromatic modulation and enharmonic modulation were applied.
Schubert composed this music by reinterpreting the characteristics of poems and the atmospheres in classical styles using a flute.
He made a big contribution to the Romantic era in the early 19th century using free forms and structures and various chords and tonalities to express beautiful musical elements as his own colors.
