- 슈만(Robert Alexander Schumann, 1810-1856)은 쇼팽(Frédéric François Chopin, 1810-1849), 리스트(Franz Liszt, 1811-1886), 브람스(Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897)와 함께 19세기 낭만주의 음악을 대표하는 작곡가이다. 그는 피아니스트 겸 작곡가, 평론가로 활동하면서 19세기 낭만주의 음악관 형성과 발전에 중요한 역할을 하였다.
필자는 본 논문에서 《숲의 정경》(Waldszenen)Op. 82에 대한 문헌 고찰과 분석을 토대로 슈만의 후기 피아노 음악어법과 음악사적 의의를 살펴보았다. 본 논문의 주제인 《숲의 정경》Op. 82는 1849년 말에서 1850년 초에 걸쳐 일주일 만에 작곡되어 슈만의 후기 피아노 작품으로 분류된다. 작품의 주제와 분위기는 낭만주의 문학의 영향을 많이 받았으며, 사냥(hunting), 환상(fantasy), 전원(idyll)이라는 세 가지 낭만주의 문학의 주제가 곡 전반에 드러나 있음을 알 수 있다.
《숲의 정경》은 총 9곡의 짧은 성격 소품으로 구성된 피아노 연곡(piano cycle)으로 서정적 선율과 짧은 음형 리듬의 반복 및 발전, 도약하는 선율의 변형 등이 사용되었다. 또 3부 형식(A-B-A) 뿐 아니라 론도 형식, 복합 2부, 복합 3부 형식 등 다양한 형식을 사용하여 슈만 고유의 음악 어법을 잘 나타내고 있다. 더불어 대위적으로 나타나는 선율과 색채감이 풍부한 화성 등은 이전부터 이어져 내려오던 형식과 음악어법에 대한 슈만의 강한 실험적 면모를 보여주고 있다.
