슈니츨러의 드라마 『 윤무』에 나타난 세기말 비엔나 사회

Abstract

본 논문은 세기말 fin de siecle 오스트리아 비엔나 Wien의 ‘풍속모사가’로 불렸던 아르투어 슈니츨러 Arthur Schnitzler의 드라마 『 윤무 Reigen, Zehn Dialoge』(1896/1897)를 중심으로, 비엔나 사회의 현상들을 살펴보려 한다. 또한 당시 비엔나 사회에 빈번히, 그러나 암묵적으로 일어나고 있던 성행위와, 성행위를 중심으로 한 인물 상호간의 태도 변화 그리고 이들의 위선적인 행동이 어떤 형식으로 나타나고 있는지 살펴본다. 『 윤무』는 겉으로는 성행위 혹은 포르노그라피적인 드라마로 폄하되기도 하지만, 슈니츨러가 살았던 19세기말의 역사 또는 사회적 맥락과 분리시켜 생각할 수 없다. 이는 그가 당시 비엔나 사회에 살고 있던 각 계층을 대상으로 권태, 고독, 좌절 그리고 소통부재 등을 작품화함으로써 당시 시민들의 의식 세계를 간접적으로 드러내고 있기 때문이다. 『 윤무』의 등장인물들은 대화를 통해 서로의 공통점을 찾지 못하고 오로지 자기중심적인 사고와 행동을 한다. 상호간의 소통이 단절된 상태에서 나타나는 것은 신뢰의 부재이다. 서로간의 믿음을 상실한 채 미래에 대한 희망이나 상호간의 발전적인 관계에 대한 전망은 없다. 성행위를 하는 데 있어 인물 상호간에 역할분담이 분명하게 일어나고 있는 이 드라마에서는 특히 남성 인물들의 경우 단조로운 삶에 즐거움을 줄 수 있는 도구로 여성을 취하고 있다. 여성들에게 감언이설과 아첨 등 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 여성의 성을 취하는 남성 인물들은 목적 달성 후 여성을 기피하는 태도를 보인다. 남성 인물들과 달리 사회적으로 더 큰 제약을 받고 있는 여성 인물들은 남성 파트너와의 대화에서 혹은 행동에서 이중적 의미를 부여하거나 위선적 행동을 한다. 정숙하고 얌전한 여인으로 보이기 위해 남성의 유혹을 거절해야 하는 여성 인물들은 표면적으로는 남성의 유혹을 거절하지만 내용적으로는 그들의 유혹을 받아들이고 있다는 것을 상대방이 감지 할 수 있도록 이중적인 행동전략을 사용한다. 또한 유혹을 ‘거부’하던 그들은 성행위 후에는 상대방에 대한 애착의 태도를 보인다. 또한 이 드라마에는 세기말 비엔나 사회 확산되어 있던 멜랑콜리나 염세적 경향이 나타난다. 하위 계층인 창녀에서부터 귀족 계층인 백작에 이르기까지 현실에 대한 회의를 느끼고 있으며, 삶에 대한 애착도 없다. 현실을 받아들이려는 용기가 결여된 비엔나 시민들은 현실로부터 탈피하고 싶은 충동을 인간의 본성인 성이라는 영역에서 해소하려 했던 것으로 보인다.|To study fin de siecle Wien citizens’ psychological status during Austria-Hungry government on 1864~1918, this paper analyze Reigen, Zehn Dialoge(1896/1897) by Arthur Schnitzler, called customs copywriters, by expressed sexual relationships with tacit awareness and mutuality behaviors between characters in the drama. Due to highly industrialized and mechanized with development of science in fin de siecle, Wien citizens went through the dynamic period, inconsistent and complexity time. These social atmosphere make the citizens to become selfish people because of the social atmosphere of fatigue, solitude, discouragement and etc. Reigen could be considered as a drama of sexual acting or pornography. But, interpretating its hidden meanings could not be seperated with the social atmosphere of the end of 19th century and it indirectly expresses Wien citizens consciousness of fin de siecle by entrance on the stage with people of every class, in Wien society. Even if the characters of Reigen simplify their acting and conversations, they could not find common subjects on their conversations. But, it shows common thing that is a self-centered concern and selfish behaviors. It cast doubt on a character’s reliability by cutting mutual understanding between the characters. Conclusively, they lost a mutual truth and chance to develop relationships. The sexual conducting of this drama, top and bottom classes are cleary separated. Male characters treat female characters as a kind of amusements stuffs. Especially, male characters try to have an affair with female characters by fair means or foul. But after having an affair, male characters avoid female characters. The female characters are differently described from male characters. They do give duplicative meanings to conversations or actions, or do play hypocrite. Female characters show themselves as a female virtue or well-behaved woman by denying male characters’ temptations. But, after having sexual relationships, female characters show strong possessiveness to male characters. This drama shows Wien society in fin de siecle with taking place Melancholie or weariness of life. For instance, the all of characters from a street girl to a count on this drama show skepticism of their life. All characters of plays, they do not have affection to their life. The characters’ poor mutual understanding means severance of human and social relationships. This phenomenon caused by civilization development and this social atmosphere derive Wien citizens to be lived as an isolation from society or a hypocrite to society. Wien citizens are not ready to accept this reality, so they want to break away from it. Indeed, the Wien citizens lived in fin de siecle use a sex, one of human nature instincts, as a gate way to exit this complicated society.
