선의 중첩을 통한 두개골 이미지 표현 연구

Abstract

이 글은 2014년 5월 ‘Another bellow me- 부제: 또 다른 나를 부르다’라는 명제로 본인의 석사 청구전에 전시된 작품(2012 ? 2014년)의 내용적, 조형적 전개 과정을 연구한 석사 청구 논문이다.

본 논문은 본인 내면에 축적되어 있는‘무의식적 불안’의 심리적 현상을 지그문트 프로이드(Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939)의 무의식 이론을 중심으로 하여 살펴보고, 이를 극복하는 방안으로‘중첩된 선(線)적 표현’으로 드러나는 본인 작품에 주목하여 그 내용과 조형적 관점을 분석하고 서술한 글이다.

급격한 변화와 치열한 경쟁이 요구되는 현대사회 시스템에 적응해야 하는 현대인들은 커다란 심리적 부담을 안고, 획일적인 삶을 영위하고 있다. 물질적으로는 풍요롭지만 마음의 풍요가 없는 시대 속에서 현대인 들은 여러 가지 심리적 문제가 결부된 장애를 직면할 수밖에 없다. 즉, 오늘의 현대인들은 물질적 풍요로움 속에서, 열등감, 수치심, 두려움과 같은 심리적 장애들이 내면에 쌓여‘무의식적 불안’을 지니면서 불안정한 삶을 이어가고 있다. 본인 또한, 성장기에 부모님과의 반목과 갈등으로부터‘무의식적 불안’의 심리적 장애를 갖게 되었다. 이는 성년이 된 오늘까지 이어져 불안정한 삶을 이어가게 하는 요인으로서 본인의 삶에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다.

본인의 내면에 잠재되어있는‘불안’이라는 감정은 부모가 자식에게 바라는 끝없는 바람과 강제성이 내포된 책임감이 주는‘도덕적 불안’의 기억에 기인한다. 이러한 불안의 감성은 친숙하고 가까운 것을 이상하고 두렵게 느끼게 하는‘낯선(Uncanny) 불안’의 심리적 상황을 유발하여 정상적 사회생활을 위협하는 상황에 이르게 하였다. 그리고 이러한 심리적 억압을 벗어나기 위해, 두려움과 혼란에서 야기된 불안의 본성을‘중첩된 선적표현’을 바탕으로 추상적 이미지로 전개하였다, 이후, 죽음과 허무를 메타포한‘두개골’이미지로 상징화하여 드러내었다. 두려움과 혼란에서 야기된 불안과 본성의 죽음과 허무를 상징화 시킨‘두개골’이미지를 미술사적 측면의 의미를 현대 미술작가인 데미안 허스트(Damien Hirst, 1965-2017)와 짐 스컬(Jim F Faure, 1959-2017)의 작품을 예를 들어 상징적 의미를 논하였다.

본인 작품의 주 조형요소인 선(線)적 표현은 시각적인 소통을 위한 이미지를 형성하는 가장 기본적 수단으로, 감정의 분출을 가감 없이 잘 드러내는 드로잉적 표현성을 지니고 있다. 이러한 선적 표현을 바탕으로 연속, 분리, 결합, 교차 등의 다양한 조형적 시도를 통해 억제된 감성을 해소하고, 무의식적 불안을 극복하고자 하는 의도를 서술하였다. 그리고 본인 작품의 주 조형요소인‘중첩된 선적 표현성’을 루이스 부르주아(Louise Bourgeois, 1911-2010)와 조지아 오키프(Georgia O'Keeffe, 1887-1986)작품의 표현성에 주목하여 논하였다.

판화 매체의 복수성을 활용해 동일한 이미지를 반복적으로‘이어붙이기’하는 작품의 구성 방식과 홀로그램과 유사할 만큼 다채로운 빛과 색의 표현성을 드러내는‘포일 박’의 도입은 본인 작품의 주요 특성으로 드러난다. 이에, 이미지를 반복적으로 이어 붙여 표현의 확장성을 도모하는 작가의 작품들과 본인 작품의 구성 방식을 비교하여 그 의도와 표현성을 분석하고, 또한, 빛과 색을 보는 각도에 따라 다르게 드러내는‘포일 박’의 도입 배경과 재료적 특성 그리고 표현 방법을 구체적으로 제시하였다.

본인은 본 논문을 쓰면서‘무의식적 불안’의 심리적 경험을 토대로 이를 본인 작품의 조형적 특징인‘중첩된 선의 확장성’과 ‘반복적 형상 이어붙이기’, 빛과 색을 저장하는‘포일 박’기법 사용의 조형적 관점에 주목하여 연구하면서, ‘비가시적 세계’인‘무의식의 세계’를 시각화할 수 있는 조형적 근거를 마련할 수 있는 계기를 갖게 되었다. 이를 바탕으로‘인간 내면의 무의식’을 ‘조형 언어’로 가시화 할 수 있는 가능성을 인지하였다는 측면에서, 이 연구는 앞으로의 본인작품 연구에 보다 심층적 탐구의 방향성을 제시하는 단초가 될 것이라 믿는다.|This paper is a master's thesis studying the content and figurative process of development of works displayed at mater's exhibition (2012~2014) of myself under the title of "Another bellow me- sub-title : calling another me" on May 2014. This paper examined the psychological phenomenon of "subconscious anxiety" accumulated in my inner side focusing on the "unconscious theory" of Sigmund Freud(1856-1939), and focused on my works expressed as an "overlapped linear expression" as a solution to overcome, and analyzed and described the contents and view on its figurative feature. Modern people who must adjust to modern system which requires quick changes and harsh competition bare serious psychological burden and live standardized lives. They are rich in material, but directly face disorder combining various psychological problems in the era of psychological poverty. In other words, in the midst of plenty material, modern people build psychological disorders such as sense of inferiority, humiliation, fear and lead instable life bearing "unconscious anxiety". I also have a psychological disorder for "unconscious anxiety" due to conflict with parents in growth phase. It has been significantly affecting my life as a factor leading unstable life until today as an adult. The "anxiety" inherent in my inner side is originated from the memory of "ethical anxiety" which the endless expectation of parents for their child and forced responsibility built. Such anxiety cause psychological condition of "uncanny anxiety" which makes something friendly and close to be strange and fearful and threatens normal socialization. Also, to escape from psychological suppression, the nature of anxiety caused by fear and chaos was transformed to abstract image based on "overlapped linear expression". Later, it was symbolized as a "skull" image which is a metaphor of death and futility. This paper discussed the symbolic meaning of "skull" image which symbolizes nature of anxiety from fear and chaos, death and futility as an art historic point of view by the examples of Damien Hirst(1965~2017) and Jim F. Faure(1959~2017), the modern contemporary artists.

Linear expression, the major element of my work is the most basic way of forming image for visual communication which has drawing expression well representing the eruption of emotion. Based on the linear expression, this paper described the intention to resolve suppressed emotion through various artistic expressions such as continuity, separation, combination, and crossing, and to overcome the unconscious anxiety. Also, this study focused on the "overlapped linear expression" of major element of my work in works of Louis Bourgeois(1911-2010) and Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986).

The major characteristics of my work are format of "laying end to end" same images repeatedly using the plurality of engraving, and "foil bark" which displays various color and light that is similar to hologram. Thus, this paper compared my work format and other artists' work which promote expandability of expression by repeatedly connecting images to analyze the intention and expression. Also, it specifically suggested instruction background of "foil bark" which displays the color and light by the angle it is shown, its materialistic characteristic and expression method.

While working on this paper, I focused my study on the artistic point of view on "expansion of overlapped line", "laying end to end repetitive shape", and "foil bark" method for saving light and color based on the psychological experience of "unconscious anxiety".
