徐有英의 《六美堂記》 硏究

Abstract

이 논문은 19C 조선 후기에 雲皐 徐有英이 창작한 ≪六美堂記≫를 硏究한 것이??. 운고는 소년 시절 과거에 뜻을 두고 학문 연마에 전념하였는데, 중도에 이를 포기하고 평범한 선비의 신분으로 문학활동에만 몰두하게 된다. 그는 정통 한문학 장르에만 국한하지 않고 다양한 양식에 걸쳐 문학활동을 하는 개방성을 보이면서 長篇漢文小說인 ≪육미당기≫를 창작하게 된다. 운고는 ≪육미당기≫의 ＜自序＞에서 기존 고소설 수 편을 합하여 새로에 창작한 것이라고 밝히고 있어 조선 후기 소설에 대한 인식과 소설 작품의 양적 확대를 살펴보는데 있어서도 주목이 되는 작품이다. 또한 기존의 고소설과는 다르게 작자와 창작동기 및 형성과정 등이 소상하게 밝혀져 있어 조선조 후기 소설의 유형을 多層的으로 보여주고 있다. 이에 본고는 ≪육미당기≫의 내용 분석을 통해 작품의 구조를 보다 면밀히 탐색하고, 작품 내에 揷入된 漢詩의 내용과 역할을 고찰하여 ≪육미당기≫가 가지고 있는 한문 소설로서의 문학적 특성을 총체적으로 밝히기 위해 계획되었다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 순서로 연구를 진행하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 19C 조선 후기의 시대 배경을 통해 운고의 生涯를 알아보고 문학적 배경을 통해 소설 창작동기를 살펴보았다. 시대적 배경을 통한 운고의 생애를 살펴본 결과 그는 개인적으로나 사회적으로 매우 불우한 생애를 살았지만 문학적 재능 및 인품이 뛰어나 대단한 문인으로 인정받은 듯하며 상당한 문학적 소양을 가진 인물이었음을 알 수 있었다. 운고는 ≪육미당기≫의 창작동기를 ＜自序＞에서 밝히고 있는데, 이를 表面的 動機와 裏面的 動機로 나누어 고찰하여 운고의 소설에 대한 견해를 알아보았다. 그 결과 표면적 동기는 架虛鑿空이라는 허구적 틀속에 人情物態라는 인간의 眞實性을 그리려는 데 있었으며, 이면적 동기는 端宗에 대한 추모와 翼宗에 대한 사모의 정으로 인해 현실세계에서 실현하지 못한 불평한 심정을 허구적인 세계에 재구성해 놓았음을 알 수 있다. Ⅲ장에서는 작가가 ≪육미당기≫를 통해 제시하고자 하는 바를 정확히 파악하기 위하여 내용 분석을 통해 작품의 구조를 고찰해 보았다. 構造란 작품의 내용과 그 내용을 전개시켜 나가는 흐름이라고 보고, 이에 전체적인 작품 구조를 內容的 側面과 進行的 側面으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 내용적 측면에서는 남주인공인 김소선을 중심으로 전개되는 주동적인 사건을 위주로 고찰해 보았는데, 그 결과 ≪적성의전≫이라는 근원 설화의 골격을 유지하면서도 효행담, 영웅담, 애정담 등 다양한 모티프의 중층적 결합을 통해 복잡다단한 내용이 전개되고 었었다. 진행적 측면에서는 그 사건의 흐름을 '出生 - 結緣 - 苦行 - 試鍊克復 - 幸福'이라는 5단계 순차 구조로 살펴보았다. 특히 結緣 과정이 어느 한 곳에 집결되어 있지 않고, 작품의 복잡다단한 내용 전개를 위해 여러 回에 걸쳐 분포되어 있다는 점에서 기존 고소설의 구성을 수용하면서도 새로운 구조로의 변형을 모색하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 ≪육미당기≫내부에서 나타나는 갈등 양상을 크게 兄弟(惡兄善弟)間의 葛藤, 婚事障碍葛藤, 社會的 葛藤으로 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 여기서 작가가 궁극적으로 원했던 것은 다양한 갈등양상의 제시와 그것의 해소를 통해 모순된 현실을 비판하고 이상사회를 구측하려고 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 ≪육미당기≫에는 총 22首의 漢詩가 삽입되어 있는데, 삽입시가 작품의 구성전개에서 기여하고 있는 구체적인 역할을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 ①인물의 내면 심리를 제시하여 주인공의 성격을 파악하게 하는 역할, ②남녀 주인공들의 만남(결연)을 매개하는 역할, ③詩才를 제시하여 재능과 덕을 드러내는 역할, ④ 작품전개에 있어 초월적 존재로 등장하는 구체적 상징물의 ?穗?? 정리 및 부각시키는 역할로 요약해 볼 수 있었다. 그리고 총 22首의 詩중 10首가 결연에 중요한 매개체로서의 역할을 하고 있다는 것을 도출해 낼 수 있었는데, ≪육미당기≫라는 표제에 적합할 만큼 소설 속에 삽입된 시가 서사구조 안에서 남녀간의 결연에 중요한 기능을 하고 있음을 보여 주는 것이다. 이 외에도 前代의 전기소설이나 동시대의 소설보다도 삽입시의 사용빈도와 편폭이 짧아진 것으로 보아 소설다운 형태에 보다 접근하고 있다고 평가를 내릴 수 있었다. Ⅳ장에서는 作家意識과 ≪육미당기≫의 漢文學史的 位相을 살펴보았다. 운고는 소설의 특성이 架虛鑿空하다고 하였는데 이는 소설창작 과정에 허구적 상상력이 개입되었음을 의미하는 것으로 작가가 소설 구성상의 특성을 정확히 인식하고 있었음을 보여준다. 또한 소설을 이루는 내용을 人情物態로 보았는데 이는 소설이 기본적으로 현실을 반영한다는 점과 소설 내에서 궁극적으로 추구되는 가치는 인간의 보편적 진실성임을 제시하고 있다. 따라서 일련의 검토과정을 통하여 ≪육미당기≫는 철저한 작가의식 속에서 창작한 한문소설로서 앞선 시대의 소설들이 작가미상이었던 것에 비하면 상당히 발전된 면모를 드러내고 있어 19C 소설사에 있어 주요한 위치를 차지한다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 작품의 구조와 삽입시의 분석 결과 ≪육미당기≫는 기존의 제 소설을 절충시켜 복합적인 구조를 전개시켜 나간 독창적인 작품이라는 점과 형식에 있어서도 소설 장르로서의 형태에 좀 더 접근하였다는 점에서 ≪삼한습유≫와 함께 19C 한문소설사의 大尾를 장식하는 작품이라고 평가할 수 있겠다.|This article is about ≪YookMiDangKi≫ written by Ungo(雲皐), Seo Yoo-yeong, a writer in the latter period of Chosun in 19C. When Ungo was a boy, he devoted all his energies to his studies with a desire to pass the civil service examination. But he gave it up halfway and concentrated on just writing as an ordinary learned man. He didn't limit his area just to the chinese classical literature, but tried various literary forms, writing a long chinese classical novel, ≪YookMiDangKi≫. Ungo said in the author's preface of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ that he wrote a new novel with numerous existing works. ≪YookMiDangKi≫ is a noticeable work to examine recognition on the novel and the increase in quantity of novels in the latter period of Chosun. Unlike other ancient novels, ≪YookMiDangKi≫ disclosed in detail the author, motives, story development process, and the likes, which hints about the type of novels in the latter period of Chosun age. The study was designed to explore the structure of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ in more detail by examining its stories, and to discover its literary characteristics as a chinese classical literature by investigating the chinese poems interpolated. I proceeded the study as following. In chapter Ⅱ, I viewed Ungo's life from temporal background of latter period of Chosun in 19C, and the motives of writing from his literary background. As to Ungo's life, He led a very unfortunate life in both individual and social aspects, but seems to be recognized as a great literary man because of his literary talent and high personality. I found that he was a man of considerable grounding in literature. Ungo disclosed his motives of writing ≪YookMiDangKi≫ in the author's preface. I examined his motives in external and inside aspects to seize his sense of value on literature. His external motive was to show human's reality of "Injeongmultae(人精物能)" in the fictional frame of "kaheochagkong(架虛鑿空)", and the inside motive was to re-construct his uneasy heart which was not realized in this world from Danjong(端宗)'s memory and the love for Igjong(翼宗). In chapter Ⅲ, I examined the stories and the structure of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ in order to seize exactly what the author, Ungo intended to say in ≪YookMiDangKi≫Thinking that a structure is the stories and the story development of the work, I examined the entire structure of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ on the stories and the story development. Examining active episodes happened around Kim So-sun, the hero of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ I found that ≪YookMiDangKi≫ developed complex and various stories by combining various motives such as tale of filial deeds, tale of heros, and tale of love, maintaining the frame of elementary legend of ≪JeokSungEiJeon(翟成義塼≫. I examined the story development of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ in 5 sequential structure; birth- connection - mortification - overcome of ordeal - happy. I found that ≪YookMiDangKi≫ accepted the structure in old stories and at the same, made some changes into a new form, since the connection was not concentrated in a certain point but distributed in several times to develop the complex story. Next, I examined confliction in ≪YookMiDangKi≫ with inter-brother confliction (bad elder brother and good younger brother), confliction in getting married, and social confliction. I found that what the author extremely intended was to criticize the absurd world at that time and to realize an ideal world by suggesting and resolving various confliction. Totally 22 chinese poems were interpolated in ≪YookMiDangKi≫. I examined their roles for the story development of ≪YookMiDangKi≫. Their roles were; ① to help to understand the hero's personality by showing the inner psychology of the characters, ② to intermediate the connection of male and female characters, ③ to show talents and virtue by poem materials, ④ to arrange and high-lighten the role of specific symbolic materials, a supernatural existence in the work. I concluded that 10 chinese poems among the total 22 poems had important roles as a medium for connection. Those interpolated poems did so important roles in the epic structure for the connection of male and female as suitable to the title, ≪YookMiDangKi≫, Besides, I found that it reached a novel-like form, since the number of use of and the length of the interpolated poems were shorter than those in biographical novels in the earlier times or novels at that times. In chapter Ⅳ, I examined author's spirit and the position of ≪YookMiDangKi≫ in the chinese classical literature. Ungo said that the characteristics of novel is "Kaheochackgong", which means that fictional imagination is intervened in writing a novel. This tells that the author exactly recognized the characteristics of novel structure. He took the contents of a novel as "Inchungmultae", which means that novels reflect basically the realities and that the extreme value followed in novels is human's universal honesty. From these findings, I thought that ≪YookMiDangKi≫ is a chinese classical novel created in thorough author spirit, placed in an important position in the novel history in 19C, with considerably advanced features comparing with other novels of author unknown in earlier times. With the structure and the poems interpolated, ≪YookMiDangKi≫ could be evaluated as a great work along with ≪SamHanSepEu(三韓拾遺)≫ in chinese classical novels in 19C, since it is a creative work which developed a complex structure by combining existing novels and reached a novel in forms.
