사회적 리얼리즘 관점에서 벤 샨 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 사회적 리얼리즘관점에서 벤 샨을 연구 하였다. 20세기 초 미국은 19세기 후반에 느꼈던 과학과 문명이 가져다 준 환희에서 벗어나 그것들이 가져온 빈곤과 부패, 사회적 모순 등의 현실적 문제에 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 이러한 현실적인 위기는 미국 사회의 큰 변화를 가져오게 되었고 예술가들은 이러한 사회적 현실에 눈을 돌려 당시의 어두운 사회상과 일반 대중들의 삶을 있는 그대로 묘사한 작품들을 제작하였다. 그들 가운데는 예술의 의미와 기능을 새롭게 생각하는 사람도 있었고, 급진주의자, 사회주의자도 나왔으며 행동적인 그룹도 나타나기 시작했다. 이러한 상황 속에서 일단의 화가들에 의해 자연스럽게 주장된 것이 사회적 리얼리즘(Social Realism)이다. 벤 샨은 (Ben Shahn 1898-1969)은 1930년대 미국의 사회적 현실에 대한 깊은 관심과 함께 많은 작품을 제작하여 사회적 리얼리즘의 대표적인 작가로 간주 되었다. <사코와 반제티의 수난>은 그의 출세작이자 대표작이었다. 멕시코 화가 디에고 리베라(Diego Rivera)와 함께 벽화 제작에 참가하였고 이념적인 면이나 기법적인 면에서 많은 영향을 받았다. 벤 샨은 미국 사회에 변화와 충격을 준 경제대공황등 사회적 현실에 관심을 가졌고 사회적 현실과 시민의 삶을 묘사한 많은 작품을 제작하였다. 벤 샨은 사회적 현실을 주제로 선택하면서도 인간에 대한 따뜻한 애정을 심어주는 방향으로 결합하여 나타내고 있었다. 본 연구자는 이 논문을 작성하는데 있어 다음 몇 가지 단락으로 나누어 분석하였다. 먼저 사회적 리얼리즘이 형성된 당시의 역사적 배경과 의의를 서술하였다. 다음은 벤 샨의 생애 작품 형성배경에 대해 고찰하였으며 그의 작품 특성을 분석하면서 사진의 영향을 받는 공간의 구성, 상징적 편집으로 나누어 연구하였다.| In the early of 20th century, got out of the delight which resulted in 19th century scientism, America faced out poverty, rottenness and social conflicts. These crises brought huge changes in American societies. The artists who were concerned about these social realities made realistically works about gloomy social conditions and general public lives at that time. From among these artists, some artists thought about the meaning and the function of the art newly, but others participated in radicalism, leftist organization. In these circumstances, a group of artists naturally organized 'Social Realism'. Ben Shahn (1898-1969) was one of the leading painters who presented many works and took interested in 1930's social realities. <Sacco and Vanzetii of Passion> was the begin of his fame and typical works. In 1930, he was invited by Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, to work on mural and inevitably influenced by ideological and technical aspects. He concerned on the American realities, like the Great Depression which brought huge changes and shocks to American societies, so he made paintings about social realities and general public lives. He made choice of the theme on social realities through those methods and showed his love for mankind. This paper is divided into two sections. First section deal with the background and the meaning of "Social Realism". The last section is about Ben Shahn's life and his paintings which minutely divided into the character of his paintings, composition of space that influenced by photo and symbolic editing.
