A Study of Johannes Brahms's Klavierstűke, Op.119
Abstract
Certain pieces by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), Klavier Stuck, Op. 119 are studied. The analysis of the works written in the late period of the composer will help to understand his Neo-Classicism combined with the musical idiom of Romanticism and form of Classicism.
In particular, the character pieces written in the late period of Brahms manipulate concentrated compositional style in terms of miniature form. These works also are important repertoires to understand composer's idea of pianism.
The works written between 1878 and 1893 comprise Brahms's late works, for example, Phantasien and Klavierst?cke. His character pieces differ from the character pieces written by other contemporary composers; Brahms never uses the titles for his character pieces and enjoys abstract expression, such as intermezzo or rhapsody.
The late period is particularly significant for Brahms because his own unique and mature musical expression are presented through the general markings as shown in the character pieces. The pieces written in this period also present some problems for the pianist, or performer who seeks for the better understanding of the musical world of composer; Brahms utilizes obscure rhythm and harmony, and melodies veiled in contrapuntal texture, and these elements found in his music provide difficulties for the performer in interpreting the meaning of conflicting expressive terms and symbols.
The purpose of the thesis is to analyze the obscure harmonies and melodies in interpreting his music, and provides an useful guide to understand his musical idiom. In particular, it also suggests the idea to understand Brahms's unique music, combined with the abundant orchestral sound effect yet pianistic texture.
