바이런 알멘의 음악적 내러티브 이론 연구

Abstract

음악에 담긴 내용과 의미를 표현하고 서술하려는 음악의 의미론은 1980년 신음악학 이후로 담론이 크게 활성화되었다. 그중 음악적 “내러티브”는 문학 이론을 빌려와 음악 작품의 내용을 이해하고 해석을 끌어내려는 시도였다. 영미 음악학에서 1980년대부터 이어오던 음악적 내러티브 담론은 1988년 다트머스 대학 학술대회를 기점으로 많은 지적을 받았다. 이후, 지적과 맞물려 단점이 두드러지기 시작한 음악적 내러티브는 2000년대에 들어서자 그 논의의 열기가 점차 식게 되었다. 그럼에도 음악적 내러티브의 연구를 이어 온 학자들 또한 존재하였는데, 바이런 알멘(Byron Almén)은 바로 그들 중 하나이다. 그는 2008년 『음악적 내러티브 이론』(A Theory of Musical Narrative)을 출간하여, 과거의 내러티브 담론을 정리하고, 음악적 내러티브를 활용하여 작품을 분석하는 새로운 분석전략을 제시하였다. 그가 제시하는 음악적 내러티브 분석 전략은 음악 작품의 형식과는 다른, 음악 내용의 원형 틀을 제시한다. 이는 로망스, 아이러니, 비극과 희극 총 네 가지로, 음악의 작은 요소들을 작품의 시간 순서대로 추적하여 그 변화를 정리하는 분석 전략이다. 알멘은 노스럽 프라이, 제임스 리슈카와 같은 문학 이론가와 알기르다스 그레마스와 같은 기호학자, 그리고 에로 타라스티, 베라 믹즈닉과 같은 음악학자의 이론과 주장을 망라하여 내러티브로 분석하는 음악을 제시하였다. 음악적 내러티브는 기존에 고착화된 해석이 존재하는 음악 작품을 새롭게 바라보는 데 큰 도움이 되는 분석 전략이다. 알멘의 분석 이론은 기존의 화성, 형식 분석 외에 음악 내적인 의미를 더욱 중시하여 분석할 수 있는 새로운 분석 방법론의 역할을 할 수 있다.|The musical narrative discourse, which has been around since the 1980s in American musicology, has been criticized a lot since the 1988 Dartmouth University conference, which was based on the theme of “Disciplinary Interactions” and “Music, Narrative, and Metaphor.” Due to the conference, the discourse on the musical narrative has been more critical and rich for ten years, but its taxonomic and rule-orientated qualities had cooled the discourse’s enthusiasm in the late 1990s. However, there were scholars such as Byron Almén who continued the study of the musical narrative. He published A Theory of Music Narrative in 2008, summarizing the narrative discourse from the 1980s to the early 2000s, and presenting a analysis theory to interpret musical meaning. This paper examines various arguments on the musical narrative from the 1980s to the 1990s and presents Almén’s musical narrative theory.
