미술조각에 대한 David Smith의 영향 연구

Abstract

제 2차 세계대전 이후 급속도의 경제 성장을 한 미국은 정치, 경제적 패권 뿐만 아니라 문화적인 패권마저 장악하였다. 따라서 서양 미술의 판도는 유럽에서, 이렇다할 특별한 자신들의 양식을 갖추지 ?幣求? 미국의 뉴욕 중심으로 크게 변화 하였고, 이전의 오랜 역사와 전통을 가진 유럽의 선진 미술과 당시 유행하던 사상과 문화 양식을 전략적으로 수용하여, 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)라는 새로운 양식으로 발전시켰다. 추상표현주의는 회화에서 중점적으로 나타난 양상으로 재현이 아니라, 작가의 내면 세계와 주관적 형태나 무의식의 상태에서 발생한 우연한 결과를 존중하는 양식으로, 유럽의 구성주의(Constructivism)와 큐비즘(Cubism)의 영향을 받았다. 조각에서도 이러한 추상표현주의의 양식을 보여주는 조각이 유행하게 되었고, 조각이라는 작업적 한계를 극복하기 위해 금속을 소재로 한 용접기법을 사용하여 유기적 형태에 가까운 구상적 표현이 중심이 되었다. 이러한 미술의 큰 변화 속에 조각사 적으로 가장 두드러지는 사람이, 당시 유럽에서 건너와 활동하던 여타 작가들과는 달리 미국에서 태어나 미국에서 꾸준히 작업하여 미국만의 독특한 조각양식을 구축한 작가 데이빗 스미스(David Smith, 1906-1965)이다. 처음에 회화를 공부하였고, 아버지와 경제적 사정에 의하여 공장에서 용접일을 배우며 오랜시간을 보냈던 데이빗 스미스는, 잭슨 폴록(Jackson Pollack, 1912-1956)으로 대표되는 '전면회화(all-over painting)'에서 보여지는 추상표현주의의 양상을 띈 회화와 조각의 접목을 통하여 '공간에의 드로잉(Drawing in space)'라는 새로운 양식을 개발하여 현대 미술의 새로운 비젼을 제시하였다. 뿐만 아니라 자신의 뛰어난 용접기술과 남다른 왕성한 추진력으로 대규모, 대량의 철제 용접 작품을 제작하였고 이를 자신의 작업장인 볼턴 랜딩(Bolton-Landing)에 설치 함으로써 대형 야외 조각 전시의 유행에 선두가 되었으며, 원형에의 탈피라는 시각으로 오브제를 자신의 작품에 도입하였는데, 스미스 조각의 정점으로 평가되는 큐비스 연작에서 보여지는 단위 형태의 입방체는 당시 미국의 60년대 모더니즘 회화의 한계상황과 그로 인한 형식주의 조각의 활성화로 미니멀리즘과 앗쌍블라쥬에도 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 본 논문에서는 그러한 데이빗 스미스의 독특한 양식이 구축된 시대적 배경과 성장배경에 대한 상세한 고찰을 통해 그의 작품 세계를 이해하고, 그가 갖는 미국조각사에서의 위치와 영향에 대해 연구함으로써 20세기 조각사에 나타나는 다양한 양식들의 연계성을 밝히고자 한다. 본 논문의 연구 방법으로는 연구서적, 간행물과 기사, 인터뷰, 학위 논문, 전시 카달로그 등을 참고한 설명과, 주요 작품들, 연구의 필요에 따라 여타 작가에 대한 도면을 실어 이해를 돕고자 하였다.|After the World War 2, due to its remarkable economic growth, the U.S. got control not only of the politics and economy, but also the culture. Accordingly, the western art had faced a great change influenced by both Europe, which was the core of art, and New York, which did not have its original style at that time. By this strategic combination of the historical features of Europe and the latest fashion of New York, a new style called Abstract Expressionism was born. Abstract Expressionism, influenced by Constructivism and Cubism of Europe, is a style emphasizing coincidental results occurred from the inner world and the shape of ego or unconsciousness of the artist. Even though it was mainly showed in paintings, it was also popular in sculptures, which lead to trend of constructed expression close to organic figure by using metal materials with welding process to overcome the operation limits of sculpture. In this grand transition of art, David Smith was the most remarkable figure. Unlike other artists who had moved from Europe, he was born and raised in the U.S. and built his own unique sculpture trend. Started with study in painting, he spent a long time working at a factory due to his father's economic situations where he learned welding process. After, he presented a new vision of modern art by inventing a new trend called 'Drawing in Space', which is a combination of sculpture and painting of Abstract Expressionism showed in 'All-Over Painting', represented by Pollack. Also, with his great welding ability and excellent thrust, he installed many large metal welding works at Bolton-Landing, his studio, and became one of the leading artists of large open-air exhibitions of sculpture. He molted objects into his works with a view to escape from the circular, and the cubes in units shown in his [Cubis] which is evaluated as his zenith, influenced Minimalism and Assemblage by activated formalism sculptures caused by the limited condition of Modernism paintings of the 60's. This thesis is to understand his works by detailed analysis of the historical and growth backgrounds of David Smith, and to study the influence and location he has in the history of American sculpture to verify the connection of the various trends of the history of sculpture of 20th century. This thesis includes explanations referenced from research papers, publications and reports, thesis and exhibition catalogs, and also shows drawings of other artists to help understanding.
