미국드라마와 한국어더빙본에 나타난 백채널(Backchannel)비교연구

Abstract

대화란 말하는 사람의 일방적인 전달이 아니라 말하는 사람(화자)과 듣는 사람(청자)과의 상호작용속에서 이루어진다. 대화에서는 화자의 역할뿐만 아니라 청자의 역할도 중요하며, 청자가 화자의 이야기에 적절한 반응을 보일때, 대화는 더욱 활기있고, 윤택해진다. 이때, 청자가 화자의 이야기에 언어적, 비언어적인 반응을 보이는 것을 우리는 백채널(Backchannel)이라고 하는데, 백채널은 원활한 의사소통에 있어서 중요한 역할을 한다. 영어교육의 주요 목적 중 하나는 영어를 실제상황에서 의사소통의 수단으로 자연스럽게 쓸 수 있는 능력을 향상시키는 것이며, (정숙희, 2000) ‘의사소통 능력 향상’은 2007년 개정 교육과정의 개정 방향과 중점에서도 다루고 있는 중요한 목표 중 하나이기도 하다. 본 연구에서는 미국드라마와 한국어더빙본을 비교하여 백채널 표현의 기능 및 표현형식의 차이를 알아보고, 미국 드라마내에서 등장인물별, 성별로 백채널의 표현과 기능에 차이가 있는지 분석하였다. 그리고, 실제 영어수업에서 백채널을 효율적으로 교육시킬 수 있는 방안에 대하여 살펴보았다. 제1장에서는 백채널의 연구목적과 필요성을, 제2장에서는 백채널의 정의와 기능 및 형식을 구분하고 선행연구를 정리하였다. 제3장에서는 미국드라마와 한국어 더빙본 사이에 나타난 백채널을 비교하였고, 미국드라마에서의 성격 및 성별로 백채널의 기능 및 표현의 차이를 분석하였다. 제4장에서는 분석결과 및 제언을 이야기하였으며, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미국드라마와 한국어 더빙본 모두 백채널 기능 중 설명요구 기능이 가장 많고, 그 뒤로 동의?긍정의 기능, 감정적 반응 기능, 새로운 정보 표시 기능이 나왔다. 미국드라마와 한국어 더빙본에서 백채널 횟수에 큰 차이가 나지 않는 것으로 보아, 한국어 더빙본이 원 드라마의 문맥을 충분히 이해하고, 백채널 표현을 적절히 반영하여 표현하였다고 보여진다. 그러나, 미국드라마에서의 백채널 표현을 한국어 더빙본에서는 일반적인 대화로 바꾼 경우도 보였는데, 이는 서구문화권이 동양문화권보다 감정표현에 스스럼이 없는데, 언어가 이러한 사회, 문화의 영향을 많이 받는다는 것을 보여준다. 둘째, 백채널 표현형식을 보면, 미국드라마와 한국어 더빙본 모두 ‘yeah’, ‘oh’, ‘그래’ 등의 맞장구어사 표현이 가장 많이 발생했으며, 그 뒤로 반복 표현, 환언 표현, 말앞지르기 표현이 나왔다. 사용빈도가 높은 백채널 표현을 보면, 미국드라마와 한국어더빙본 모두 반복 표현이 가장 많이 발생하였으며, 반복 표현, 환언 표헌, 말앞지르기 표현외의 맞장구어사 표현으로는 미국드라마에서는 ‘yeah’, ‘oh’, ‘what’, ‘o.k.’, ‘good’ 등이, 한국어 더빙본에서는 ‘그래’, ‘네’, ‘뭔데?’, ‘아’ 등이 많이 사용되었다. 셋째, 등장인물의 성격에 따라 백채널 사용에 차이가 발생하였다. 이성적이고, 논리적인 성격의 등장인물의 경우, 설명요구의 기능이 많이 나타났고, 다정하고 감성적인 성격의 등장인물의 경우, 감정적 반응의 기능 또는 새로운 정보 표시 기능, 동의의 기능이 많이 사용됨을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 미국드라마에서의 백채널 기능을 보면, 남성들은 설명요구 기능이 압도적으로 많으며, 그 다음으로 동의?긍정의 기능이 많고, 여성들은 새로운 정보 표시 기능, 감정적 반응의 기능, 동의?긍정의 기능이 고루 표현된 것을 볼 수 있다. 다섯째, 성별에 따른 백채널 표현형식비교에서는 남성들의 경우, 여성들에 비해 맞장구어사 표현뿐만 아니라, 반복표현, 환언 표현도 더 많이 사용한 것을 알 수 있다. 남성들이 좀 더 적극적으로 자신의 의사를 표현한다는 다른 연구결과와 일치하는 부분이다. 원활한 의사소통을 위해서는 대화자간의 문법적인 대화 뿐만 아니라, 상황에 따른 의사소통 전략 등이 어우러져야 하는데, 백채널은 의사소통을 원활하게 할 수 있는 전략으로서, 대화에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 본 연구를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 영어교육의 주요 목적중 하나는 실제상황에서의 자연스러운 의사소통 능력을 향상시키는 것이며, 학교에서는 영어 수업시간에 학생들에게 적절한 백채널 표현 사용을 연습하게 함으로써 원활한 커뮤니케이션 능력향상을 도모하는 것이 필요할 것이다. 이를 위해, 수업에서 적용할 수 있는 백채널 교육방법으로는, 우선 학생들에게 백채널 기능과 표현형식을 미리 설명한 후, 좋아하는 미국 드라마나 영화의 대본을 보면서 백채널표현을 찾아보도록 하는 것이다. 그리고, 그룹별로 다른 상황을 주고, 학생들이 대화문을 만들어 상황극을 하도록 하여, 실제로 백채널을 사용하여 대화하는 연습을 하도록 하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.|Conversation doesn't mean one-way communication from a speaker to a listener. It should be interactive between them. So the role of the listener is as crucial as that of the speaker in a conversational situation. When the listener responds to the speaker adequately, the conversation becomes more active and richer. The verbal or nonverbal responses the listeners show in a conversation are called 'Back Channels,' which plays an important role in effective communication. One of the main goals of English education is ‘to enhance fluent communication abilities in a real situation,’ which was reflected in the revised education curriculum in 2007. This study has analyzed backchannel expressions of American dramas and their Korean dubbed versions. It has examined how they are different in forms and functions. It also has analyzed backchannel expressions and their functions according to gender and characters. Finally, some practical suggestions are made as to how the findings of this study can be used in class. In the first chapter, this study covers the research objectives and necessity of backchannel. In the second chapter, the definitions and functions and forms of backchannel are distinguished and previous studies are reviewed. In the third chapter, the backchannels which appeared in both American dramas and their Korean dubbed versions are compared. It analyses differences between backchannel’s functions and expressions according to characters and genders in the American dramas. Finally the study results and some suggestions are in the fourth chapter. This study’s some results are as follows. First, 'clarification request functions' were the highest in both original and dubbed dramas. 'Agreement,' 'emotional response functions,' and ‘newsmarker’ were followed accordingly. Because there was no significant difference in the number of backchannel usages in both versions, it could be said that a dubbed version faithfully reflected the contexts of its original one. In some cases, the Korean dubbed version changed backchannel functions of the original ones to normal conversations. This can explain that people express their personal feeling more easily in the western cultures than in the oriental cultures. In other words, this means that languages are affected by both a culture and a society. Secondly, utterances such as 'yeah', oh,' and ‘o.k.’ were the highest in both original and dubbed dramas. 'Repetitions,' ’changing words,’ and 'guessing words in advance' were followed. Repetitions were most frequently found in both an original version and a dubbed one. Besides repetitions, changing words and guessing words in advance, some expression are 'yeah,' 'what,' 'oh,' 'o.k.,' 'good,' and etc in the original dramas, and 'Grae(O.K.),' 'Ne(Yes),' 'Monde?(what?),' in the Korean equivalents. Thirdly, there were some differences in using backchannel according to characters in a drama. If the character was reasonable and logical, she was likely to use more explanatory expressions. On the other hand, if the character was more emotional and sentimental, she was likely to use more expressions which contained feeling or newsmarker, and agreement. Fourthly, in terms of back channel functions in American dramas, male requested overwhelmingly explanations. Agreement(positiveness) were the next. However, newsmarker, emotional expression, agreement(positiveness) were being equally used by female. Fifthly, in the comparison of using backchannel according to gender, male characters not only used more backchannel expressions but also they used more repetitions and changing words than female characters. This finding confirms the previous researches that males express their opinions more actively than females do. In order to do effective communication, we need not only conversation based upon grammar but also contextual communication tool. This study confirms that back channel plays a very crucial role in conversation as an effective communication tool. One of the main purposes of English education is to enhance natural communication abilities in a real situation. Therefore students need to learn and practice the use of backchannel expressions to improve their communication abilities in class. In order to introduce backchannel method to students, the functions and expressive forms of backchannel should be explained in advance and let them find out some backchannel expressions in their favorite American dramas. And teachers can give them different situations and let them make situational dramas with back channel expressions and practice them in class.
