물질의 생성과 변형에 관한 조각적 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미술에서 물질의 생성과 변형을 창작 수단으로 삼는 조각 작품을 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 변형이 연구자의 개인 창작에서 지니는 가치와 그것이 현대 사회의 문화적 맥락과 삶에 대한 성찰을 어떻게 반영하는지를 심층적으로 분석하고자 한다. 현대 및 동시대 조각의 발전은 형태 해체에 대한 탐구가 점차 심화하고 있으며, 조형 언어의 체계적 분석을 통해 물질을 매개로 조각의 새로운 가능성을 탐구하고 실험적 재료를 활용함으로써 새로운 조각 언어를 창조하려는 시도를 보여준다. 이를 통해 조각의 외연을 확장하는 방향성을 모색한다. 본 논문은 총 다섯 개의 장으로 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째 장에서는 연구의 동기와 목적, 그리고 본 연구가 가지는 학문적·예술적 의의를 제시한다. 물질의 생성과 변형이라는 주제는 단순한 재료적 측면을 넘어, 물질이 인간의 감정, 기억, 의식과 어떻게 상호작용하며 변환될 수 있는지를 탐구할 가능성을 열어준다. 두 번째 장에서는 물질의 생성과 변형에 관한 기존 이론들을 분석한다. 가스통 바슐라르는 물질의 상상력과 연금술적 접근을 통해 물질이 예술적 사유와 감정 전달의 중요한 매개체임을 강조하였다. 그는 물질이 단순히 작품의 기반이 아니라, 예술가와 관객 간 소통의 통로로 기능함을 제시하였다. 또한, 앙리 베르그송의 ‘생명의 약동(élan vital)’ 개념은 물질과 시간, 기억의 상호작용을 탐구하며, 물질이 과거와 현재를 연결하는 매개적 역할을 한다는 점을 설명한다. 한편, 질 들뢰즈의 ‘차이와 반복’ 이론은 지속적 변화와 생성의 맥락에서 물질의 창조적 가능성을 제시하며, 물질의 동적 본질에 대한 이해를 심화시킨다. 이 세 이론가의 관점을 바탕으로, 본 연구는 물질을 단순한 조형적 요소가 아니라 창조적 참여자로 재해석하며, 물질적 변형이 지닌 철학적, 예술적 의미를 조명한다. 세 번째 장에서는 쿠사마 야요이, 에바 헤세, 아니시 카푸어의 작품을 비교 분석한다. 이들은 물질의 생성과 변형을 주제로 한 독창적인 예술적 실천을 통해, 연구자의 창작 과정과 공통점 및 차별점을 드러내는 중요한 사례로 작용한다. 이 장에서는 각 예술가가 재료의 선택, 가공, 변형 과정을 통해 그들의 조형적 언어와 감정을 어떻게 구체화하는지를 논의한다. 이러한 분석은 연구자의 작품에서 나타나는 물질적 변형과 그 심층적 의미를 이해하고, 조각 예술에서 재료의 새로운 가능성을 모색하는 데 기여한다. 네 번째 장에서는 연구자의 두 차례 개인전을 중심으로 물질 탐구와 조형적 실험의 과정을 다룬다. 물질에 대한 호기심과 인생에 대한 성찰은 연구자가 전통적인 재료의 한계를 확장하고, 복잡한 감정과 사상을 조각적 형상으로 표현하는 데 중요한 동기가 되었다. 이 과정에서 연구자는 생성과 변형의 불확실성을 창조적 가능성으로 재해석하며, 물질 내재의 에너지를 생명력과 잠재력의 형태로 표현한다. 다양한 재료의 결합과 콜라주 방식은 물질의 다층적 의미와 새로운 조형 언어를 드러내는 데 중요한 도구로 작용하였다. 마지막 장에서는 본 연구의 성과를 종합하며, 물질의 생성과 변형이 현대 조각에서 가지는 다층적 기능과 의미를 재조명한다. 물질은 단순한 조형적 재료를 넘어, 동적 잠재력을 지닌 창조적 매개체로 재해석되며, 예술 창작에서 무한한 가능성을 열어주는 도구로 자리매김한다. 본 논문은 물질의 생성과 변형이 현대 조각에서 중요한 주제로 부상하고 있음을 보여주며, 이를 통해 조형 예술의 새로운 방향성과 창조적 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.|This thesis delves deeply into the generation and transformation of materials in contemporary sculpture, discussing the forms and meanings of material transformation in contemporary art. The innovative use of materials in modern art is a crucial method for artists to reflect contemporary life and explore the interaction between materials, human emotions, and consciousness. This research enables a profound understanding of the creative concepts in my sculptural works and the pivotal role materials play within them. This thesis is composed of five chapters. First, focuses on the application and philosophical significance of material generation and transformation in contemporary sculptural art. Combining theoretical research with personal artistic practice, this study explores the critical role materials play in artistic creation. The results demonstrate that the choice, processing, and transformation of materials not only shape the visual experience and perspective of the works but also profoundly impact the expression of emotions and ideas. With technological advancements, artistic exploration of materials transcends traditional views, incorporating deep considerations of existence, time, and the cosmos. Through experimental inquiry and creative practice, this research showcases the creative potential of material transformation, deepening our understanding of the material foundation of sculptural art and its complex relationship with human emotions and cognition. The second chapter analyzes the perspectives on material generation and transformation from Gaston Bachelard, Henri Bergson, and Gilles Deleuze. Bachelard emphasizes the imagination and alchemical thought of materials, viewing them as both the foundation of sculptural works and crucial mediators in the exchange of art expressions, emotions, and thoughts. Bergson highlights the importance of materials as a bridge connecting the past and present in art, revealing the interactions between materials, memory, and time. Deleuze's theory of "Difference and Repetition" explores the diversity of existence and the process of creation, emphasizing the continuity and creativity of inherent changes in objects. These theories provide a perspective that views materials not just as sculptural subjects but as dynamic participants and sources of creation. The third chapter through previous studies centered around the works of Eva Hesse, Anish Kapoor, and Yayoi Kusama, analyzes how the innovative use of materials in contemporary sculpture explores the mental and emotional realms, and how these explorations express perceptions of social culture. Kusama's works delve into themes of infinity and ego dissolution through repetitive patterns and forms, offering deep insights into her psychological world. Hesse uses non-traditional materials like fibers, rubber, and plastics to explore the finiteness of materials and the organic nature of her works, expressing reflections on human emotions and existence. Kapoor's work, involving large-scale sculptures and installations and the use of 'auto-generation' and wax, explores the relationships between form and material, often prompting audiences to contemplate the connection between the self and the universe. These artists enrich their artistic language and provide a multidimensional understanding of material use and cultural expression in contemporary sculpture. The fourth chapter discusses in detail the expression and transformation of materials in contemporary art. Through an analysis of specific artistic works, it illustrates how materials transcend their inherent properties to become profound artistic expressions. This chapter is divided into three parts: the creation of amorphous objects, exploring methods to break traditional object and form boundaries through innovative materials and techniques; life forms and transformations of materials, analyzing how 'life' is imparted to materials in my works and exploring the inherent energy and dynamic changes through material processing and reconfiguration; and the creation and collage of materials, discussing methods to create new artistic forms and expressions by combining various materials. These works demonstrate the diversity of materials and the new possibilities after their combinations, showing a deep understanding of material properties and creativity.

Moreover, other sections deeply reveal the complexity and diversity of material use in contemporary art, explaining how artists explore and innovate materials to express a broader range of cultural and philosophical ideas. Each section explains the critical and innovative roles materials play in contemporary artistic creation through specific art examples. In completing this research, I have gained a deeper understanding of material generation and transformation in contemporary sculpture. This exploration not only provides artists with infinite creative space but also opens new windows of perception and understanding for the audience. As artists, our responsibility lies not only in creating formal novelty but also in evoking emotional empathy and profound thinking through our works. This research is not only a thorough analysis of my artistic practice but also a comprehensive study on material changes and innovative applications in contemporary sculpture.
