목조각에서의 심리 표현 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 현대인들에게 만연해 있는 심리적 고통에 대한 관심으로부터 출발한다. 현대사회가 물질적 측면에서 이미 충족의 수준을 넘어 과잉으로 치달아가면서 인간의 정신적 측면에 대한 관심은 상대적으로 소홀해져왔다. 이렇듯 한켠으로 소외되어버린 인간의 정신적 문제들로 인하여 서로에게 더욱 크고 많은 마음의 상처를 남기고 사는 것이 지금의 현실이다 하지만 무수한 타자(他者)와의 공존을 전제로 하는 사회 속에서 이러한 정신적 상처는 불가피하다. 자존(自尊) 의식이 강한 인간의 특성상, 자신과 다른 이질적인 존재와의 만남은 심리적 긴장(stress)을 유발할 수밖에 없기에 결국 끊임없는 생채기를 안고 살아가야 하는 것이다. 이처럼 개인의 심리적 상처가 이미 고착화된 현실 속에서 이를 외부의 폭력이 남긴 잔재로서 감추고 피해야 할 대상으로서만 바라볼 것이 아니라, 이 상처들을 사회 공동체 속에 살아가면서 지극히 자연스럽게 경험하는 삶의 흔적으로서 새롭게 조명하고 이를 시각적으로 조형화하는 작업을 시도하고자 하였다. 특히 그 심상을 입체적으로 형상화하는 과정에서 목조각이라는 표현 방식을 사용하면서, 대상인 나무의 특성과 그것을 깎는다는 행위에 주목하였다. 하나의 생명체였던 나무를 깎는 것은 곧 개인적 상처의 경험을 투사하여 이를 정화하는 과정이었다. 이와 동시에 그 결과물로서 남겨지는 빈 공간은 상실의 흔적만이 아니라 새로운 가능성을 향해 열려 있는 공간이 될 수 있기 때문이다. 이와 같은 연구 과정을 통해 심리적 상처가 갖는 상실의 이미지를 목조각의 구조적 특성으로 표현함과 동시에, 의도적으로 과장된 표현으로 외상의 이미지를 더욱 부각시켰다. 그리고 결핍과 과잉이라는 상반된 시각적 요소의 결합을 기본으로 하여, 현대사회 속 개인의 불안한 모습을 은유적으로 표현하고자 시도하였다. 이를 바탕으로 본 논문은 다음과 같이 총 3장으로 구성되었다. 제1장 서론에서는 본 논문의 전반적인 연구 목적과 적용하는 연구 방법에 대하여 개괄적으로 서술하였다. 제2장 본론에서는 작품의 이론적 배경 및 실제 작업 과정에서의 조형적 접근 방식에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 본인의 작품 각각에 나타는 제작 방법 및 의도 등에 대한 심층적 분석을 수행하였다. 제3장 결론에서는 본 연구의 결과를 재정리하고, 그 성과 및 보완 요소를 검토하면서 향후 작업의 지향점에 대해 모색하였다.| This research starts with attention to psychological pains widely spread among people in modern society. Ever since the society became surplus of material goods, attention to humanity had become relatively indifferent. Hence in reality, people continuously hurt each other by neglecting existing psychological problems. However these problems are inevitable in modern society where many different kinds co exists. Due to self-respect nature of human beings, an encounter with different being is always stressful however in the end, they all have to bear with it and get along. Therefore in this thesis, visualization of psychological pains as a natural course of life in modern society is attempted and proposed new perspective rather than avoiding the debris of external violence. Especially in formation of psychological status, wood is selected as a medium and the focus is set on the procedure of sculpting. Sculpting is a process of removing a piece of body to create new figure and the whole process could be considered to reflect the healing process of individual pains. At the same time, the remaining not only reflects what is left of, however it can also provide ways to new opportunities. In the course of research, sense of loss that psychological pains possess is expressed with the characteristics of wooden sculpture and at the same time exaggerated with over reactions. Also, by setting the combination of contradicting visual effect, deficiency and surplus, as a basis, insecurity in modern society is expressed metaphorically. The thesis is organized in three sections as follows. In the introduction, overall purpose and the application of the research are described. In the second section, production methodology and philosophy behind the art works are analyzed with theoretical background of art works are and formative approach to them. Finally, in the conclusion, an overview of the thesis is stated with future works for an improvement.
