말러의 가곡 《소년의 신기한 뿔피리》 분석연구

Abstract

본 논문은 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911)의 《소년의 신기한 뿔피리》(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)에 대한 연구이다. 문학과 시에 관심이 많았던 말러는 아힘 폰 아르님(Achim von Arnim, 1781-1831)과 클레멘스 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano, 1778-1842)가 독일 민요시들을 수집하여 엮은 『소년의 신기한 뿔피리』(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)의 시에 14개의 가곡을 작곡하였다. 필자는 본 논문에서 말러의 가곡적 특징이 어떻게 나타나는지, 무엇보다 희극적 주제를 가진 곡을 3곡 선택하여, 말러가 그 특징을 어떻게 표현하였는지 분석하였다. 제2곡 〈헛수고〉(Verlor’ne Müh)는 남녀 간의 사랑 이야기로 여자는 자신의 적극적인 고백에 남자의 거절의사를 받아들이지 못하고 계속 구애하여 희극적인 모습을 담고 있다. 제6곡 〈물고기에게 설교하는 파두아의 성 안토니우스〉(Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt)은 겉으로는 진리를 갈망하지만, 실상은 변화하지 않는 삶을 살아가는 인간의 모습을 물고기에 빗대어 풍자함으로써 웃음을 유발시킨다. 제10곡 〈높은 지성의 찬가〉(Lob des hohen Verstands)는 높은 지성이 없는 당나귀가 높은 지성을 가진 척하는 우스꽝스러운 모습을 통해 해학적으로 표현한다. 말러 가곡은 소박하고 서정적이며 주관적인 감정을 내적으로 고백하는 성격을 지닌다. 또한 민속적 단순함과 풍자를 가곡으로 표현한 것이 특징이다. 곡 안에서 전주, 간주, 후주가 길게 나타나고 있으며, 그의 가곡 선율은 보통 단순한 느낌을 많이 받게 되는데, 악보에 나타나있는 지시어로 가사의 내용이나 감정을 세밀하게 요구하고 있다. 이 3곡은 공통적으로 전주와 간주의 길이가 길고 연결구가 짧게 자주 나타나며 이것을 통하여 음악적 아이디어를 완성시키고 곡의 분위기를 만들어주었다. 시의 내용에 포함된 것은 연결구로 보았고, 부분과 부분을 연결해주는 것은 간주로 보았다. 말러가 풍자적이고 희극적인 곡들을 많이 작곡한 만큼 그의 음악적 특징, 시와 음악, 희극적주제가 곡에서 어떻게 표현하고 작곡 되었는지에 대해 연구함으로써 이 곡을 연주하는 연주자들에게도 도움이 되기를 바란다.| This dissertation studied the songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn) written by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). As an enthusiast of literature and poetry, Mahler chose 14 poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a collection of German folk poems assembled by Achim von Arnim (1781-1831) and Clemens Brentano (1778-1842), and set them to music. In this paper, three songs have been analyzed, all of which were composed based on the common theme of humor and wit: No.2 Verlorne Müh (Labour Lost), No.6 Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt (St. Anthony of Padua’s Sermon to the Fish), and No.10 Lob des hohen Verstands (Praise of Lofty Intellect). Before exploring Mahler’s composition style and how humor was embodied in his music, here are brief synopses of the three songs: First, No.2 Verlorne Müh is a story about a man and a woman where the woman constantly tries to win the man’s love while refusing to admit the fact that he already said no. Next, satirical yet comical aspects are shown in No.6 Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt by using fish as a metaphor for human who seems to pursue truth but never attempts to make changes to his or her life at the end of the day. Lastly, No.10 Lob des hohen Verstands tells about a donkey pretending to boast of its lofty intellect when it is not as bright as it seems, which one could find it amusing. Mahler’s songs tend to be simple and lyrical, allusively relaying one’s emotions. Then again, the songs are rather straightforward and sarcastic at the same time as can often be found in folk art. Mahler wrote long preludes, interludes, and postludes, and fairly simple melodies, but he attempted to deliver the lyrics or the emotions in detail using instructions and dynamics on the score. The three songs analyzed in this dissertation all featured long preludes and interludes with short but frequently appearing bridges, and this combination completed the musical concept that Mahler had in mind and created the right mood for each song. Short melodies added to help move on to the following lines in a verse were considered bridges while piano accompaniment added to connect the verses were considered interludes. A number of papers written on Mahler’s songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn can be found in Korea, but no attempts have been made so far to analyze the songs that share a common theme. Mahler wrote a great many satirical and witty songs, and studying his music style and how poems, melodies, and humor were manifested in his music will help those who wish to play them.
