로저 퀼터의 가곡집 《5개의 셰익스피어 노래 Op.23》 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 퀼터(Roger Quilter, 1877-1953)의 《5개의 셰익스피어 노래》(Five Shakespeare Songs, Op.23)를 반주부 중심으로 분석한 연구이다. 퀼터는 텍스트를 윌리엄 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare, 1564-1616)의 희곡 『심벨린』(Cymbeline), 『좋으실 대로』(As you like it), 『자에는 자로』(Measure for measure), 『십이야』(Twelfth Night)에서 등장인물들에 의해 불리는 노래 중 5개를 발췌하였다. 제1곡 〈더 이상 태양의 뜨거움을 두려워 말라〉(Fear no more the heat o’ the Sun)는 죽은 이의 안식을 기원하는 진혼곡으로, 현실 세계와 사후 세계의 묘사가 대비를 이룬다. 제2곡 〈푸른 숲 나무 아래〉(Under the Greenwood Tree)는 숲에서의 삶을 찬양하는 노래로, 피아노와 성악이 16분음표와 8분음표의 경쾌한 리듬으로 자연에서 즐겁게 살아가는 이들을 묘사한다. 제3곡 〈이는 사랑하는 사람과 그의 소녀라〉(It was a Lover and his Lass)는 따스한 봄날에 사랑을 나누는 연인들의 모습을 묘사한 곡으로, 피아노에서 독자적인 선율을 연주하여 단순한 리듬으로 이루어진 성악 선율에 서정성을 더한다. 제4곡 〈그 입술을 가져가세요〉(Take, O take those lips away)는 연인으로부터 배신당한 여인의 원망과 슬픔이 나타난 노래로, 네 음으로 이루어진 짧은 모티브와 당김음으로 여인의 애통한 심정을 담아냈다. 제5곡 〈헤이, 호, 바람 불고 비 오고〉(Hey, ho, the Wind and the Rain)는 삶의 어려움에 대해 이야기하는 광대의 노래로, 익살스러운 리듬과 잦은 템포 변화, 폭넓은 셈여림으로 연극적이고 해학적 면모가 돋보인다. 5곡의 분석을 바탕으로 그의 가곡의 특징을 정리하면 먼저 텍스트 선택에 있어 자연과 사랑의 주제를 선호하였으나 죽음과 인생이라는 다소 무거운 소재도 사용하였음을 알 수 있다. 또한 시를 그대로 사용하지 않고 변형하여 사용하였다. 시의 구조를 반영한 음악적 형식 및 프레이즈 구조가 나타난다. 소박하지만 서정성이 담겨있는 아름다운 선율을 사용하였고 그의 선율은 시의 운율과 강세를 면밀히 담아낸다. 조성 및 화성은 전통적인 어법 안에 머물고 있으며, 전조 및 감7화음, 부속화음, 지속음, 비화성음 등의 사용으로 다양한 색채를 더한다. 본 논문에서 중점적으로 분석한 반주부는 첫째, 시의 내용이나 분위기를 반영한 다양한 반주형을 사용한다. 둘째, 피아노만의 독자적인 선율을 사용하여 가사의 내용을 암시하고 분위기를 조성한다. 셋째, 성악과 피아노 간의 대화가 이루어지며 성악의 프레이즈를 반주부가 이어받아 마무리하기도 한다. 본 가곡집을 통해 셰익스피어 시의 음악성과 의미를 섬세히 담아낸 퀼터의 뛰어난 작시법을 살펴볼 수 있으며 특히 반주부에서 나타난 특징들을 통해 그가 성악과 피아노 성부에 각각 동등한 중요성을 부여하여 작곡하였다는 사실이 드러난다. |This thesis talks about a study of Five Shakespeare Songs, Op.23 by Roger Quilter(1877-1953). Quilter is a composer of British songs who was active in the early 20th century. He composed 112 songs and is known as Frankfurt group, inherited a traditional British ballad. The Song Cycle Five Shakespeare Songs was composed based on songs from William Shakespeare(1564-1616)’s plays. This research categorized Quilter’s lifetime and his song style and analyzes Five Shakespeare Songs focused on the accompaniment. The first song Fear no more the heat o’ the Sun is a requiem and there is a contrast between this world and the next world. Under the Greenwood Tree is a song that praises the life of the forest. It describes those who enjoy living in nature by using rhythm combined with 16th and 8th notes. It was a Lover and his Lass depicts lovers on a warm spring day and plays its own melody on the piano, adding lyricity to the simple rhythm of the vocal part. Take, O take those lips away is a song that contains the sorrow of a woman betrayed by her lover and dominantly uses short motive and syncopation. Hey, ho, the Wind and the Rain is a clown’s song that talks about the difficulties of life, and its theatrical and humorous aspect stands out with humorous rhythm, frequent tempo changes, and wide calculation. To sum up the characteristics of his song, he preferred the theme of nature and love in selecting text first but also used a rather heavy subject like death and life. The poem was used by modification rather than by use as it is. The musical form and phrasing structure reflects the structure of poetry. Melodies are simple but lyrical, and closely follows the rhythm and strength of the poem. The piano part uses various accompaniments that reflect the content or atmosphere of the poem. Also, it uses its own melody to suggest the lyrics and create an atmosphere. Finally, there are conversations between the vocal and piano parts. Through this work, we can look at the excellent composing ability of Quilter, which delicately captures the musicality and meaning of Shakespeare's poetry, and in particular, the characteristics of the accompaniment reveal that he composed music by attaching equal importance to vocal music and piano vocal parts, respectively.
