로이 리히텐슈타인 Roy Lichtenstein의 〈푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 벽화 Mural with Blue Brushstroke 1984-1986〉연구

Abstract

본 논문은 미국 팝아트의 대표적인 작가 중 한 사람인 로이 리히텐슈타인 Roy Lichtenstein (1923-199 의 ＜푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 벽화 Mural with Blue Brushstroke 1984-1986＞에 관한 연구이다. 그는 모두 7점의 벽화를 제작하였으며, 그 중 4번째에 해당하는 이 작품에 자신의 전 화업의 특징을 집약시키고 있다. 20세기 초반에 벽화 양식은 사회적, 경제적, 정치적 이슈를 다룬 거대하고 기념비적인 공공 미술의 개념으로 이해되었다. 그러나 리히텐슈타인은 영웅적인 요소를 찾는 대신 기존의 이미지를 패러디 하는 특징적인 작업 방식을 적용하는 것으로 벽화를 자신의 회화작업의 연장선상에 두었으며, 벤데이 점들, 뚜렷한 검은 윤곽선, 이미지 콜라쥬 등과 같은 자신만의 독특한 표현 양식을 사용하여 크고 웅장한 광고판을 연상시키는 형식으로 이미지들을 제시했다. 리히텐슈타인이 벽화를 제작한 동기로는 1960년대 후반 이후 정부의 공식적?? 예술 지원으로 공공 미술이 발전하면서 벽화의 제작이 활성화되었다는 것과, 리히텐슈타인 작품에서 보여지는 확대된 캔버스나 클로즈업 된 이미지와 같은 팝아트적 특성이 벽화의 요구와 부합하였다는 사실을 들 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 리히텐슈타인 작품의 두드러지는 특징을 패러디로 보고, 그의 작품을 통해 나타났던 패러디의 모든 요소가 집결된 작품으로써 ＜푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 벽화＞를 연구하였다. 이것은 또한, 공공 미술로서 대중적인 장소에 위치하여 주변 환경과 함께 존재하면서 궁극적으로 팝아트가 이루고자 한 삶과 예술의 간극을 해소하고자 하였던 미술의 의미를 적극적으로 수행하고 있는 작품이라는 점에서도 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 이러한 사실들을 기반으로, 본문의 첫 장에서는 리히텐슈타인의 ＜푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 벽화＞ 생성의 기반이 되는 미국 팝아트의 형성 과정과 팝아트 작가로서 그의 생애를 정리하였다. 두 번째 장에서는 벽화 제작 당시의 사회적 분위기와 그의 벽화 작업 전반을 살펴보았으며, 마지막 장에서는 그의 작품의 본질인 패러디적인 특성을 벽화와 연계하여 분석하였다. 또한 해프닝의 환경 개념과의 연관성 속에서 ＜푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 ??화＞가 지니는 의의와 독자성을 밝혔다. 이 연구를 통해 리히텐슈타인의 벽화는 대중적인 소재와 기법을 사용하였을 뿐 아니라 그들이 생활하는 환경 안에 직접 침투함으로써 팝아트의 정신을 확장시킨 작품이라는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이러한 사실은 공공 미술 분야에서 팝아트가 이룬 중요한 성과라고 보여진다. 따라서, ＜푸른색 붓놀림이 있는 벽화＞는 리히텐슈타인 개인에게 뿐만 아니라 팝아트의 전체 맥락 속에서도 중요한 의미가 되는 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.|This is a study on Roy Lichtenstein 's ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke 1984-1986＞. Lichtenstein worked 7 murals until 1993, after mural for New York Pavilion at World's Fair by 1993. ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke＞ is 4th one of Lichtenstein 's entire mural works, and He condensed all his career in this mural. Early 20th Century's mural style has been understood as large and monumental public art. But Lichtenstein extended the mural from his paintings by adapting his characteristic method of work, paroding the ready-made images, instead of finding heroic elements. And by doing that he adhere to his former methods of expression, such as benday dots, distinct black outlines and image-collage. This work has several motivations, and among others the official financial support of the government to public arts at that time and the artist's peculiar way of work - magnified canvas and closed up image - which agreed with demands of the mural may be specially discussed. As the essence of his parodic work, this theses is emphasized on ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke＞ which all his parody elements concentrated. This is also significant as public art that existence of surroundings, accomplished the ultimate goal of the Pop Art and it's implication. Representing things as they really are, the first chapter of the main discourses shows the forming stage of the American Pop Art and his life as the Pop artist, which became the foundation of his ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke＞. The second chapter indicated the social environment and his entire mural works. The last chapter analyzed his parodic character connected to the Mural. And also, it clarified his peculiarity for the meaning of ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke＞ in the association with the environmental concept of the Happening. Through this study showed Lichtenstein has not only used subject matter and technic derived from pop culture but his Mural expended spirit of the Pop Art as he Penetrated the environment of the people life. And, this also shows the importance of the accomplishment of the Pop Art in Pubilc Art field. This ＜Mural with Blue Brushstroke＞ is the art work that has meaning of the greatest implication to Lichtenstein as well as the entire Pop Art genealogy.
