동화 속에 나타난 가부장적 요소의 전복 : 바바라 워커의 동화 다시 쓰기

Abstract

영문초록: p. 70-71|동화의 단순한 이야기 전개 속에서 우리가 숨어있는 의외의 정치적 의도를 발견하게 된다는 것은 놀라운 일이다. 이는 바로 여성의 여성화 작업이다. 동화 속의 세계는 남성 중심의 가부장제를 사회의 바람직한 기본 틀로 제시하고 남성과 여성이 각각 이에 합당한 태도를 가질 것을 은연중에 암시한다. 모험을 다루는 동화가 아닌 이상 대부분의 동화에서 이야기 전개는 여성 등장인물들에 의해 이루어진다. 이야기는 "그녀"가 겪는 여러 일들을 중심으로 펼쳐지고 "그"는 결말부분에만 등장할 뿐이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 "그"는 동화에서 핵심적 인물이다. "그"에게 선택 받아 결혼에 이르는 것이 "그녀" 인생의 행복한 결말이고, "그녀"가 겪는 모든 고난은 "그"를 향한 필연적 과정으로 설정되어 있기 때문이다. 본고에서는 이러한 설정을 통해 동화가 제시하는 남성과 여성의 역할 모델이 얼마나 남성에게 유리한 것으로 설정되어 있는지 알아볼 것이며, 인간발달의 이른 단계에서부터 이러한 설정을 접하고 익숙해짐으로써 어린 여성 독자들이 어떻게 남성 중심적 사회가 요구하는 "여성"에 맞도록 스스로를 규정하게 되는지 그 가능?봉? 연구하고자 한다. 본고에서 필자는 가장 흔히 읽히는 몇 편의 동화를 선정하였으며, 기존의 동화가 여성의 시각으로 다시 쓰여 졌을 때 어떻게 달리 읽힐 수 있는지를 비교하기 위해 바바라 워커(Barbara G. Walker)의 Feminist Fairy Tales에 수록된 몇 편의 동화를 함께 분석하였다. 동화 다시 쓰기에서 필자는 네 가지 문제에 중점을 두어 살펴보았다. 즉 여성이 남성의 소유물로서가 아니라 스스로 자신의 몸의 주인으로서 능동적 자아를 지닌 주체가 되는 것, 남성 신체를 기준으로 내린 심사에 따라 결핍으로 평가 받았던 여성 신체의 위상 복원, 남성성/여성성의 이분법적 구도의 허상, 그리고 마지막으로 늘 서로 시기하고 대립하는 적으로 설정되었던 여성들 간의 유대의 가능성 등이다.|Fairy tales imply unforeseen political intention under simple structure. The world that fairy tales show proposes androcentric patriarchal system as a standard form of society and suggests man and woman fit in it. In fairy tales, except adventurous ones, story is mainly developed by female characters. What "She" suffers makes up the main stream of story and "He" appears in the end. But this "He" is the core character. Now that to be chosen by "Him" means "Her" happiness, all "She" goes through is the process to reach "Him". The purpose of this paper is to examine some fairy tales, focusing on how male and female roles are set up in favor of man and how woman fits herself in this androcentric structure from the early stage of life. Furthermore this paper deals with Barbara G. Walker's Feminist Fairy Tales to see how differently the existing fairy tales can be rewritten in a female point of view. In Feminist Fairy Tales I have studied four points. First, woman as the subject of herself, not as man's property. Second, the restoration of female body that has been estimated as deficiency comparing with male body. Third, the ghost image of femininity and masculinity. Finally, the possibility of female bond, different from so far description: woman to woman as enemies with each other.
