A Study on Organic Expression of Animal Figures
Abstract
The nature is no longer an enemy that we have to overcome and conquest in the 21st century. Rather, it is what the human race have to protect and love as a space for their own life.
There are many kinds of materials for arts. Among them I selected stone from the nature as my own works in order to practice harmonization between the nature and human beings, which is a modern paradigm.
Stone exists as it is in the nature. But, when it comes to human beings, stone becomes to have several meanings and values for different people. It becomes a good toy for children in the ground; nice material for a constructor to build a house; and an object for a geologist to analyze the history and formation of geological strata. To me, stone is splendid material to express artistic images. It is common in the road, in the river bed and on the shore. However, it becomes a work of art that expresses something in my hand. That makes me delighted.
I have thought over what to express with stone. Stone is a synonym of lifeless things, which is pure inorganic substance without any additional organic matter. However, I wanted to show that it can have a significant life as it is processed by human beings and further an artist.
Also stone is a symbol of weights. Even without mentioning huge stones of a pyramid, stone is a barometer of heaviness. So, I tried to express the image of stone as it is.
Consequently, I tried to refresh images of stone such as heaviness and massiveness while infusing a life to the inorganic matter. In my works, stone has animal figures; in particular, a snail with a heavy shell on the back, a turtle supporting a hard shell, and a hippopotamus as a symbol of heaviness.
Thereby the possession of life by the inorganic substance expresses not only a bright paradise in our imagination but also weights and existence of living things, especially human beings.
Finally, I review the roles and meanings of stone in the art history since the history of human beings began, and analyze the meaning of stone as a means of expression and material for arts in the study.
Based on the above ideas, I explain theoretical background and expression methods by each individual work and establish the necessity of my works and a concept of work development.
The study is a result of analysis about 「Animal Figure of Stone Construction」 consisting of three chapters:
Chapter 1 Introduction clarifies the study purposes and methods of the works.
Chapter 2 Main Subject provides a brief background of the works and describes the aspects of formation and materials in formative expressions and explanations about the works.
Chapter 3 Conclusion summarizes the meeting of my works and suggests a future direction.
