대지미술의 장소성에 대한 연구 ― 마이클 하이저의 작업을 중심으로 ―

Abstract

본 논문은 1960년대 중반 이후 본격적으로 전개된 대지미술의 장소성의 문제를 마이클 하이저의 작업을 중심으로 다루고 있다. 대지미술가들은 모더니즘 미술의 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고 미술관, 화랑 등과 같은 제도적 환경에서 벗어나 대지라는 자연을 대상으로 새로운 미술을 하고자 시도한다. 이러한 시도에서 중요하게 등장한 것은 바로 ‘장소성’ 개념이다. 대지미술은 오브제만이 아니라 장소 및 자연 환경을 중시하는 미술이다. 이에 본 논문은 대지미술의 장소성이 어떻게 형성되었으며, 그것이 갖는 의미가 무엇인지를 우선 다루고자 한다. 모더니즘 미술의 기본 개념과는 그 맥락을 달리하는 대지미술은 장소의 개념을 확장하여 다양한 방식으로 그 조형적 의미를 보여주고 있다. 본 논문에서 주목한 확장된 장소는 미술로 재현된 대지, 자연의 조형적 변용, 자연의 빛과 초월성, 그리고 흔적으로서의 자연미학 등으로 드러난다. 본 논문은 특히 마이클 하이저의 대지미술에 나타난 장소성의 의미를 그의 초기 작품에서 후기 작품에 이르는 작업 과정을 분석하고 살펴보고자 한다. 그의 대지미술 작업에서 비판적으로 검토해야 할 부분이 적지는 않다. 그러나 화이트 큐브에서 벗어나 대지를 미술의 근원으로 삼았고, 후기 작업에서는 이를 환경 조각으로 변용시켰다는 점에서 20세기 현대미술사에서 하이저가 남긴 조형적 성과는 높이 평가될 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 현대미술에서의 대지미술의 위상과 그 미학적 가치를 마이클 하이저의 작업을 통해 고찰한다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 현대미술을 또 다른 방식으로 이해할 수 있는 계기가 마련될 수 있을 것이다. |This thesis focuses on Michael Heizer's work on the site of land art, which has been developed since the 1960s. Land art artists critically examine the limitations of modern art and attempt to make new art for the nature of the earth out of institutional environments such as galleries. An important part of this attempt is the concept of place. Land art is not only an object but also a place and a natural environment. In this regard, this paper will first discuss how the site of land art is formed and what it means. Land art, which is different from the basic concept of modern art, expands the concept of place and shows its formative meaning in various ways. The extended place noted in this paper is revealed by the reproduce art, the transform of nature, the light and transcendence of nature, and the natural aesthetic as a trace. This paper focuses on analyzing the meaning of site in Michael Heizer's land art from his early works to later works. Heizer's initial work was to think of the earth as a canvas and to painting on the ground. After his art of land has since changed into a piece of the environment art.
