- Abstract
- This study has analyzed mainly the works exhibited under the theme of ‘Unexpected Magical Encounter’ in March, 2010 among the works produced during the course of personal work progress from 2008 to 2010 in terms of contents and forms.
There exist visual experiences with various objects in people’s lives. People view the objects in subjective forms and convey significance to the objects through their individual experiences and memories. When people encounter objects unconsciously in daily lives, they experience images. This process is expressed as combination of objects and images in my works. The objects I experience through unconsciousness sometimes come across as self-portrait beings which reflect my inside.
The objects in my works are new objects which have been re-interpreted by the appearances of inside and emotions created through my experiences and are not just imitations of the objects themselves. Consequently, the objects I saw unconsciously become a medium which serve as a passage of expressing my psychological status and displaying latent inside.
The objects in my works begin from my personal experiences. The objects where I did not recognize in my daily life sometimes become closed up to allow me to feel the emotion of ‘uncanny’ coming from the familiarity of Sigmund Freud (1856~1939) to communicate with the objects or recall my memories. Through the course of presenting the images I felt during the communication with objects, I attempted to re-interpret ordinary objects in daily lives in my works.
In the process of recognizing objects, people encounter a shift of awareness on objects through interesting and unfamiliar experience in case of conveying subjectivity to have a new interpretation. This study has researched and described such forms of objects in terms of ‘the marvelous’ in the surrealism and ‘uncanny’ in the Freud’s theory.
In addition, I explained the expression of images of communication through visual experience of objects in my works by the contrast of colors and engraving techniques. Also, through the check patterns, I attempted to display three-dimensional space.
An artist can even communicate with an immovable object which feels trivial and familiar. Also, an artist can understand the objects through a new view and aspect and can display the experience or emotion gained there into one’s own images. Furthermore, an artist attempts to use it as an opportunity to find a new potential in the future work progress while seeking problems and improvement methods for one’s own work.
