나비(Papillons, Op.2)를 통해 살펴본 슈만 성격소품의 특징

Abstract
In the 19th century, the citizen class was positioned up and rich citizens began to appear. The cultural activities that were belonging to the loyal people in the past, however, were extended to the rich citizen class, so that so-called cultured citizens were born. Such cultured citizens went over the objective and enlightening expression methods to improve the art culture that was subjective and subject to expression of personal emotion. Riding such age flow, romanticism ideas grew up based on literature and then influenced music also.
Robert Schumann (1810-1856) born in Germany is called one of the composers representing romanticism. Since childhood, he had been interested in literature, so that many of his works were composed on his literary inspiration. In order to express his literary images effectively, he composed many character pieces. He preferred large scaled works while most of the other romanticism composers composed piece form based character pieces. He, therefore, bound a number of short pieces in cycle form to make his own unique character pieces. Papillons, Op. 2 was composed in his early stage of work (1829-1839), and it is also a character piece bound into cycle form.
In this study, I looked into the background of romanticism music and history of character piece first and then his piano character piece, Papillons, Op. 2, so that I could grasp the characteristics of melody, harmony and rhythm shown generally on his character pieces, relation between literature and character piece, influence from Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and the characteristics of cycle form.
