길의 반추상적 표현을 통한 내적 자아 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 2024년 1월에 전시한 석사 청구전 [road]展의 작품들을 기반으로 작품의 내용과 조형적 측면을 연구한 것이다.‘road_’연작은 인간의 자연스러운 행위인‘걷기’를 통해 깊은 내면의 자아를 재발견하고 승화시키는 과정에서의 해방감을 길의 이미지로 시각화한 작업이다.

나는 종종 명확한 소속감을 갖지 못하는 경계인 혹은 주변인 같다는 생각을 한다. 어디에도 속하지 않는 이질감으로 인한 고독과 방황 등의 복잡한 감정은 내가 두 발로 걸어가며 직면하는 도시 속의 차가운 아스팔트 길 위에서 재발견된다. 이러한 재발견과 함께 자신을 감각하고 사유하며 해방감을 느끼는 과정에서 더 깊은 내면의 층위를 마주하게 되는 경험으로 이어진다. 말과 글로 표현하기에 부족한 이 경험을 회화의 언어로 표현하였다.

걷기 예찬에 관한 많은 연구들은 자연 속에서 속도를 잊고 걷기를 주장한다. 한편 도시를 벗어나서 살아 본 적이 없는 나는 도시 속에서 걷기에 주목한다. 걷기라는 행위 자체가 주는 원초적인 신체 운동은 자연의 원리에 순응하는 행위로서 의미가 있다고 생각하기 때문이다.

작업의 중요한 과정인 도심 속의 길을 걷는 것을 시작으로 길의 형상은 작품의 주요 소재가 된다. 일상 속의 익숙한 길을 걸어다니며 생경한 순간이나 착시 현상에서 오는 모순적인 장면과 주관적인 감각을 포착하여 작업에 반영하였다. 같은 길을 계속 걸어 다니며 다르게 감각되는 순간과 변해가는 내면의 감정을 반영하며 레이어를 쌓아갔다. 길을 암시하는 요소를 드러나게 하는 동시에 사람이나 자동차와 같은 동적인 요소를 배제하여 길의 존재감을 부각시키고자 하였고 건물, 조경 등과 같은 도시를 구성하는 요소들의 색과 형태를 변형하고 왜곡하여 주관적인 감정을 개입시켰다. 또한 즉흥적인 붓의 스트로크를 통해 내면을 표출하여 익숙한 길이 주는 친숙함과 예측 불가능한 붓질이 주는 의외성에서 오는 반추상적인 형식으로 이어 나갔다.

나는 이 논문을 통해 일상 속 단순한 걷기를 시작으로 모순적인 내면의 자아를 재발견하며 해방감을 느끼는 과정을 탐구하여 현대인의 이면의 한 부분일지도 모를 경계인이 가지는 내면의 감정을 마주하고 이해의 폭을 넓히는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 앞으로의 나의 작업에 대한 의미를 더 깊은 사유로 견고하게 정립하고, 조형적 연구와 미학적 시도를 심도 있게 이어 나가는 기반이 되기를 바란다.|This thesis studies the content and formative aspects of the work based on my paintings exhibited in January 2024, for the master's degree exhibition under the tile of [road]. The‘road_’series visualizes the sense of liberation by using the image of the road, in the process of rediscovering and sublimating the deep inner self through ‘walking’, which is a natural human action.

I often think that I am a marginal man who does not have a definite sense of belonging. Complicated emotions such as solitude and wandering caused by a sense of incongruity that belongs to nowhere are rediscovered on the cold asphalt road in the city that I face while walking on my own two feet. This rediscovery leads to the experience of encountering deeper inner layers in the process of sensing and thinking about myself and feeling a sense of liberation. This experience, which is insufficient to express in words or writing, was expressed in the language of painting.

Many studies on walking advocate walking in nature getting away from the busy life in the city. Meanwhile, I, who have never lived outside the city, pay attention to walking in the city. This is because the primitive physical movement provided by the act of walking itself is thought to be meaningful as an act of compliance with the principles of nature.

Starting with walking down the road in the city, which is an important process in the work, the shape of the road becomes the main subject of the work. While walking along familiar roads in daily life, I captured contradictory scenes and subjective sensations from unfamiliar moments or optical illusions and reflected them in my works. As I continued to walk the same road, I accumulated layers, reflecting differently perceived moments and changing inner emotions. I intended to highlight the presence of the road by excluding dynamic elements such as people and cars while revealing elements that suggest a road. Subjective emotions were intervened by transforming and distorting the colors and shapes of elements that make up the city, such as buildings and landscaping. In addition, I expressed my inner self through impromptu brush strokes, leading to a semi-abstract form that comes from the familiarity of the familiar road and the unexpectedness of unpredictable brush strokes.

Through this paper, I would like to present the possibility of confronting and broadening the understanding of the inner emotions of marginal people, which may be a part of the other side of modern people, by exploring the process of rediscovering the contradictory inner self and feeling a sense of liberation, starting with a simple walk in daily life. I also hope that it will solidly establish the meaning of my future work through deep insight and serve as a foundation for further study on formative expressions and aesthetic attempts.
