구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler)의 '소리세계'

Abstract

본 논문은 구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860∼1911)의 ‘소리세계’(Klangwelt)를 연가곡《방황하는 젊은이의 노래》(Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen)를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이론적 근거는 비스키르헨(Hubert Wißkirchen, 1934∼2018)이 정리한 말러의 ‘소리세계’(Klangwelt)이다. 비스키르헨은 말러의 소리세계를 세 가지로 분류하였다. 이는 말러가 살며 겪은 현실세계를 나타낸 ‘문명적 소리’(Zivilisationslaute)와 문명에 영향을 받지 않은 ‘자연적 소리’(Naturlaute), 그리고 이러한 것들에 대해 느끼는 감정을 표현한 ‘예술적 소리’(Kunstlaute)이다. 연구방법은 먼저 말러의 삶을 알아보고, 그 삶을 통해 형성된 ‘소리세계’를 구체적으로 정리하였다. 그리고 그가 직접 쓴 가사로 작곡된 연가곡《방황하는 젊은이의 노래》에 나타난 ‘소리세계’를 비스키르헨의 이론을 근거로 ‘문명적 소리’, ‘자연적 소리’ 그리고 ‘예술적 소리’로 분류하여 고찰하였다. 말러는 연가곡《방황하는 젊은이의 노래》의 화자가 처한 현실세계를 ‘문명적 소리’로 표현하였는데, 제1곡 <나의 연인이 결혼하는 날>의 결혼식 분위기를 나타낸 보헤미아 춤곡 리듬, 제4곡 <두 개의 푸른 눈>에서 세상과 작별하려는 화자의 마음을 장송곡 리듬으로 나타낸 것이 있다. 우울한 현실을 벗어나 화자에게 잠시나마 안식을 주는 자연을 말러는 ‘자연적 소리’로 나타냈고, 이는 제1곡 <나의 연인이 결혼하는 날>과 제2곡 <오늘 아침 들판 위를 걸었다>에 나오는 자연을 묘사하여 표현한 것과 제4곡 <두 개의 푸른 눈>의 보리수 음형이다. 말러 이전부터 인간의 감정을 표현하기 위해 작곡가들이 사용하던 관용적인 음악표현기법들은 연가곡《방황하는 젊은이의 노래》에서 말러가 화자의 감정변화를 나타내기 위한 ‘예술적 소리’로 사용하였다. 이는 화자의 심경변화를 표현한 장·단조를 대조시킨 것과 슬픔을 나타낸 하행하는 선율, 반음계적 진행, 그리고 불협화음 등이 있다. 또한 말러는 그의 작품에서 곡의 마지막에 타악기를 사용하여 죽음을 상징적으로 표현하였는데, 제3곡 <나는 불타는 칼을 가지고 있다>에도 나타나 있으며 이는 ‘예술적 소리’로 분류될 수 있다. 말러가 성장하면서 환경적으로 영향을 받은 것들은 ‘문명적 소리’가 되었고, 어린 시절부터 현실을 벗어나 자연에서 안식을 찾던 그의 삶의 방식은 ‘자연적 소리’를 만들었으며, 빈 대학에서 받은 음악교육과 지휘자로서의 경험이 그의 ‘예술적 소리’를 형성하게 하였다.|This thesis considers ‘The Sound World’(Klangwelt) of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) by focusing on the song 《Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen》. The theoretical basis is Mahler’s ‘The Sound World’(Klangwelt) summarized by Hubert Wißkirchen(1934-2018). Wißkirchen classified Mahler’s ‘The Sound World’ into three. They are the ‘civilized sounds’(Zivilisationslaute) which represents the real world where Mahler livedand experienced, and the ‘natural sounds’(Naturlaute) unaffected by civilization and the ‘artistic sounds’ (Kunstlaute) expressing the feelings he felt from these things. ?The research method first examined Mahler’s life and concretely summarized the ‘The sound world’ formed through his life. And the sound world that appeared in the song 《Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen》, which was composed by his own lyrics, was classified into ‘civilized sound’, ‘natural sound’ and ‘artistic sound’ based on Wißkirchen’s theory. Mahler expressed the real world in which the speaker of the song 《Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen》was speaking as ‘civilized sound’. For example, the rhythm of Bohemia shows the wedding atmosphere of the first song <Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht>, and the fourth song <Die zwei blauen Augen> shows the heart of the speaker to say goodbye to the world in rhythm. Mahler, who escapes from the melancholy reality and gives a rest to the speaker for a while, is expressed as a ‘natural sound’, which is the nature of the first song <Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht> and the second song <Ging heut’ Morgen ?ber’s Feld> and And the 4th song <Die zwei blauen Augen>. The musical expression techniques that composers used idiomically to express human emotions from before Mahler were used as ‘artistic sounds’ to express the change of the emotions of the speaker in the song《Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen》. This is the contrast between major and minor for expressing the change of the speaker’s mind and there are grieving melodies, chromatic progression, and dissonance. Mahler also used percussion instruments to symbolically represent death at the end of the piece in his work, which also appears in the third song <Ich hab' ein gl?hend Messer>, which can be classified as ‘artistic sound’. As Mahler grew, what he was environmentally influenced became ‘civilized sound’, the way of his life, seeking rest in nature from his childhood, created a ‘natural sound’ and his music education and experience as a conductor led him to form his ‘artistic sound’.
