공포영상의 특수분장 사례 연구

급속히 발달하는 첨단 기술과 더불어 다양한 산업 및 문화와 융합하여 발전하는 21세기 영상산업의 흐름 안에서 하나의 중요한 장르로써 가치를 더해가고 있는 공포영상과 이의 핵심 요소인 특수분장의 적용 방향에 대해 제언하고 있다. 특히, 20C기 이후 영화와 영상물들의 발전으로 인해 자본과 기술을 기반으로 시장과 트랜드를 주도하여 왔던 할리우드 대비, 상대적으로 열악하여 할리우드의 모방에 그쳐왔던 한국의 공포영상과 특수분장 분야에 차별화된 경쟁력을 부여하기 위한 대안으로써, 시청자들에게 커뮤니케이션을 할 수 있는 스토리텔링(Storytelling)의 매커니즘(mechanism)에 대해 소개하고 성공적인 적용 사례를 연구함으로써 한국 공포영상의 발전방향을 제시한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 먼저 공포영상과 특수분장에 대해 시대적 흐름에 따라 영상의 메카인 할리우드와 한국의 대표적 작품을 분석하고, 여기에 적용된 특수분장의 발전 과정을 알아보면서 20C 이후 영화와 영상물들의 할리우드와 한국의 차이를 짚어본다. 그렇게 비교될 수 있는 한국 공포영상과 특수분장의 한계에도 불구하고 최근 한국의 공포영상과 특수분장에 스토리텔링 메커니즘을 적용하여 산업에 의미있는 성과를 달성하고 발전상을 보여주었던 지상파 드라마 “주군의 태양”을 특수분장의 적용 관점에서 중점 분석한다. 드라마 “주군의 태양”은 귀신을 보는 주인공이 다양한 귀신들과 겪는 에피소드를 통해 사건을 해결하며 사랑을 만들어간다는 공포멜로 장르를 표방하며 높은 시청률을 기록한 지상파 드라마로 최근 종영되었으며, 매회 등장하는 다양한 귀신들이 검색어 순위에 오르는 등 화제를 낳았다. 이는 각 귀신에 부여된 스토리에 최적화된 특수분장이 각 캐릭터의 수용도를 높여 극의 사실감(Reality)을 극대화함으로써 시청자의 몰입을 이끌어 낼 수 있었기에 가능했던 성과라 평가된다. 본 논문은 이러한 “주군의 태양”에 사용된 스토리텔링의 매커니즘에 의한 특수분장 사례가 영상의 가치를 배가시킬 수 있는 또 다른 트랜드라는 인식 하에 “주군의 태양” 속 캐릭터와 특수분장을 심층 분석하였으며, 할리우드식 자본과 기술에 의한 특수분장의 모방성을 벗어나 한국이 취할 수 있는 특수분장 산업의 발전방향 사례로 제시하고 있다. 이와 같은 연구가 기반이 되어, 최근 한류가 우리의 문화적 경쟁력을 인정 받고 있는 것과 같이, 자본과 기술로 대변되는 현실의 제약에도 불구하고 공포영상에서도 차별화된 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있게 되기를 바란다.|ABSTRACT

This study set out to make proposals regarding horror films, which claim increasingly greater value as an important genre in the flow of film industry in the 21st century, when it is combined and develops with a range of industries and cultures along with high technologies of rapid advancement, and the application directions of special make-up, one of the essential elements of horror films. The study specifically introduced and looked into the successful application cases of the storytelling mechanism, a means of communication with the viewers as an alternative to grant differentiated competitivity to the fields of horror films and special make-up in South Korea, which has a relatively inferior environment to Hollywood that has led the markets and trends based on capital and technology according to the development of movies and films since the 20th century. It thus proposed the developmental directions of South Korean horror films. The study first analyzed the representative works regarding horror films and special make-up of Hollywood, the Mecca of films, and South Korea according to the flow of the times and examined differences in the movies and films since the 20th century between Hollywood and South Korea, tracing the developmental process of special make-up applied. In spite of the limitations of South Korea with its comparable horror films and special make-up, the study intensively analyzed the applications of special make-up in Master's Sun, a drama aired on a major network. The drama applied the storytelling mechanism to its horror film and special make-up, achieved meaningful results in the industry, and demonstrated the potential of its development. Master's Sun is a horror mixed with melodrama, telling the story of a heroine, who can see ghosts, with her episodes with various ghosts, as she solves cases and finds love. The drama was aired and recorded high ratings on a major network before it was recently ended. It created issues with the various ghosts of each episode making the search list. The results were possible because the special make-up optimized for the story of each ghost increased the acceptance of each character, maximized the dramatic reality, and induced the viewers' immersion. Based on the perception that the cases of special make-up according to the storytelling mechanism in Master's Sun could be another trend to multiply the values of film, the study conducted in-depth analysis of its characters and their special make-up and presented them as an example of future developmental directions of special make-up business of South Korea to graduate from the mimicking practice of Hollywood special make-up backed up by capital and technology. Like the Korean Wave has recently contributed to the recognition of South Korean cultural competitivity, the study results will hopefully contribute to the differentiated competitive edge of South Korean horror films despite of its realistic limitations represented by capital and technology.
