고전소설 <윤지경전>과 희곡 <윤지경전> 비교 연구

Abstract

고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞은 조선 중종조(中宗朝)를 배경으로 하여 주인공의 사랑을 현실감 있게 그리고 있는 애정소설이다. 이 작품은 여주인공의 애정성취 과정이 아닌 남주인공의 적극적인 애정양상과 성취과정을 그리고 있다. 또한 실재했던 역사적 사건을 통해서 주인공의 정치의식까지 보여주고 있다는 점에서 주목을 받았다. 이러한 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞은 1974년에 희곡이라는 현대적 장르로 각색되어 공연된 바 있다. 이것은 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞이 고전작품의 현대 장르로의 계승이라는 면에서도 그 의의를 갖고 있음을 시사한다. 본 논문은 이러한 점을 근거로 삼아 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞의 창작기법과 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞의 극적 구성기법을 비교하여 살펴보았다. 그리고 이것을 통해서 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞이 희곡이라는 현대 장르로 수용 및 변용된 양상과 그 의의를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 첫 번째로, 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞은 작품 내에 역사적 사실을 수용하여 긴장관계를 형성하고 소화(笑話)적인 삽화를 통해서 긴장상황을 이완시키고 있다. 그리고 남주인공의 정치의식을 부각시켜서 남녀 주인공의 애정실현 과정에 무게감과 당위성을 실었다. 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞은 해설자를 등장시키고 장면을 압축적으로 제시하여 장르의 특수성으로 인한 시 · 공간적 제약을 극복하고 있다. 또한 흥미 요소를 확장하여 극적 흥미를 꾀하고 있음도 살펴볼 수 있었다. 두 번째로, 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞과 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞를 비교해서 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞이 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞에 어떤 방식으로 수용되고 변용되었는지 살펴보았다. 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞은 전반적으로 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞의 서사체계와 등장 인물을 수용하였다. 그러나 희곡 ＜윤지경전＞은 주인공 윤지경과 최연화의 만남의 양상을 다양화하고 등장인물의 역할에 변화를 주어 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞보다 극적으로 구성하였다. 또한 새로운 인물의 창작을 통해서 희극적인 측면을 강조하였다. 내용면에서는 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞에 나타나는 윤지경의 정치 · 사회적인 면을 축소하고 애정의식을 부각하여 남녀 주인공의 굳건한 사랑에 작품의 중심을 두었다. 세 번째로, 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞이 현대 희곡으로 계승될 수 있게 한 원동력을 찾아보았다. 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞은 애정성취를 위해 목숨을 아끼지 않는 남주인공 윤지경의 독특한 캐릭터 양상, 애정성취 과정의 현실성, 네 차례에 걸친 반복적인 고난과 그 극복과정의 극적 흥미성, 그리고 긴장과 이완을 적절하게 구성한 기법적 특성을 갖고 있다. 이는 다른 애정소설에서 찾아보기 힘든 요소로, 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞만이 갖는 작품의 의의라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 고전소설 ＜윤지경전＞의 특성은 애정소설이라는 고전 장르의 현대적 계승의 가능성을 보여주었다는 점과 그 방법을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.|The Korean classical novel ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞ is a romance novel which provides realistic description of the hero's love in the reign of King Jung Jong during Chosun dynasty. It focuses on the hero's positive attitude about love and how he eventually won his love rather than a love story of a heroin. It also has drawn attention for showing even the hero's political consciousness through the real historical events. This Korean classical novel was adapted for a drama as a modern genre in 1974 and brought on the stage. This suggests that ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞ has some significance in succeeding Korean classical novels into a modern genre. In this respect, this study aims to compare and analyse the narrative technique of each version of ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞, that is, as a Korean classical novel and a modern play. This comparison and analysis will serve to understand how this classical novel was accepted and adapted in a modern genre, a drama and what this adaption will means today. First, the novel ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞ introduces a tense relationship by appealing to historical events as a literary setting and relaxes it by inserting episodical fabliaux. The emphasis of the political consciousness of the hero gives weigh to the process through which the hero/heroin achieved their love as well. As for the drama ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞, it can overcome the restriction resulted from limited time and space characteristic of the genre by presenting the materials and scenes in a condensed way. Moreover, it promotes a dramatic interest by intensifying functional amusement, too. Second, this study turns to how the novel ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞ is accepted and adapted in the drama ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞. Though the drama takes over the narrative system and characters of the classical novel, the former diversifies the ways that the two main character, Yoon, Ji-gyung and Choi, Yeon-hwa meet each other, and modifies the role play of the characters. And by creating new characters it reinforces a dramatic effect. In regard of the content, the drama reduces the hero's political and social aspects in the novel and lays stress on his sense of love, centering their strong love on the whole story. Third, it is examined what is the impetus to make it possible for the classical novel to be inherited to the modern drama. The novel has such technical features as the unique character of the hero, Yoon, Ji-gyung who is willing to sacrifice his life to earn love, the reality of the process of their accomplishing love, the hardships repeated over four times and the interesting course of their conquering these troubles, and the right composition of tension and relaxation. Such are difficult to find in other romance novels, as the elements specific to ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞. To conclude, this Korean classical novel ＜Yoon Ji-gyung Chon＞ is meaningful in that it exhibits the possibility and the way of inheriting a classical genre, a romance novel today.
