개정 7차 교육과정 중학교 영어교과서 문화내용 분석

- An Analysis of the Cultural Contents in Middle School English Textbooks
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine the cultural contents reflected in English textbooks for first- and second-year Korean middle school students and to make some suggestions for the improvement. For this purpose, 6 textbooks were selected and analyzed in terms of Revised 7th National Curriculum, Hammerly(1986)’s threefold classification of culture, Stern(1992)’s six aspects of culture teaching, and nationality backgrounds of culture. The results of this study are as follow: First, in terms of the analysis of the cultural topics suggested in the 7th Revised Curriculum, it is found that some topics are preferred in the textbooks: school life, friendship, hobbies, leisure time, sports, travel, food, arts, environment, volunteer, and so on. Second, behavioral culture shows the greatest percentage (60%) in textbooks. It is a way of life culture. Achievement culture and Information culture accounts for 21%, 20% respectively. Third, universal culture is presents the largest proportion (40%). American and British culture, culture in other countries, and Korean culture accounts for 23.5%, 24.7%, 11.8% respectively. Some suggestions to solve these problems are as follows: 1) there should be a specific standard of cultural education for textbook development, 2) information culture and achievement culture should be presented more often, 3) the contents of Korean Culture or differences between Korean and other cultures need to be increased to fulfill the aims of national curriculum.
