French representative Impressionist composer Claude Debussy(1862-1918) moved away from the musical trend of late 19th century to early 20th century centered in Germany and developed original colors of French music. Debussy used church modes, pentatonic scale, parallel motion, added chords, avoided existing pulsation and more to express impressionist literature with music.
One of Debussy’s art songs of his middle period was composed from three of the five poems in 「Fetes galantes」 written by poet Paul-Marie Verlaine(1844-1896) who was inspired by artist Jean Antoine Watteau(1684-1721) the founder of rococo art. Verlaine, a poet of symbolism was influenced by impressionist art that emphasized the color and the impression of the atmosphere; Verlaine thought important the nuance of the poetic diction and used figurative language often to implicate the contents and musical effects.
was published in 1892 including the remake of three songs, , , and . The first song, avoids the original pulsation while expressing the secretive mood as the title, and musically showed the empty atmosphere of the lyrics through the third note omitted chord. The second song used parallel progression, trill, glissando and more to describe the characters in . The third song used pentatonic scale, added note chords, dominant ninth chord, dominant eleventh chord so that the tone is vague, the sound rich and there are many symbolic diction. Debussy’s effectively expressed in his music the impression of the title of the poems and the overall mood of the poem through these impressionist techniques.
