‘후회와 성장’에 대한 표현 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 2013년 10월에 전시된 바 있는 연구자의 석사학위 청구 전시 ≪더 잘해야 했는데(Should Have Done Better)≫展의 전시 작품들을 중심으로 내용과 형식적 측면에서의 전개과정에 대한 연구 결과를 수록한 것이다. 전시 제목에서처럼 ≪더 잘해야 했는데(Should Have Done Better)≫展에 전시된 작품 전반에는 후회라는 감정이 내포되어있다. 연구자에게 ‘후회’라는 감정은 곧 ‘성장’의 발판이다. 후회와 성장을 거듭하는 인물과 그에 대한 연구자의 관심은 이미 오래전부터 ‘연민’이라는 감정을 바탕으로 지속되어 온 것이었다. 그러나 연구자가 이를 깨닫게 된 것은 그리 오래되지 않았다. 연구자의 작품은 오래전부터 비슷한 분위기를 유지하고 있었는데 그것은 어떠한 의도를 갖고 의식적으로 자행된 것이 아니었다. 작품을 전개하는 과정은 연구자의 손에 닿는 곳의 종이나 항상 들고 다니는 작은 드로잉 북(drawing book)에 항상 자유롭게 행하는 드로잉과 그 드로잉들의 집합, 그리고 그 중에서 선택된 하나의 이미지를 커다랗게 옮기는 방식으로 진행되었는데 그 사이에서 연구자는 그러한 드로잉이 반(半)무의식적으로 행해졌음을 알게 되었고, 그러한 무의식의 기반에 연민의 시선으로 소외된 인물들을 바라보는 자신의 일관된 정서적 취향이 있었음을 깨닫게 되었다. 이 논문을 통해 연구자는 자신의 작업 전반을 아우르는 감성과 취향에 대해 분석한다. 감성과 취향이 연구자에게 중요한 이유와 의미, 그리고 그것을 깨닫게 된 계기와 그 기반이 무엇인지에 대해 파악하고 그로부터 표현의 동기와 그 목적을 제시하고자 한다. 연구자가 작품을 통해 표현하고 싶은 것은 ‘후회와 성장’을 거듭하는 인물이며 이는 앞서 언급한 것처럼 연민이라는 감정에서 비롯된 연구자의 취향에 입각하기 때문이다. 연구자는 자신의 감성이 작업의 어느 지점을 관통하는지 구체적으로 명시하기 위해 우선 그것을 제시하고 그를 설명하는 방식을 택한다. 상통하는 감성을 지닌 정서적 취향의 예시들은 목차와 제목으로 구분되어 각자의 범주를 갖는다. 이러한 범주와 그 순서의 흐름으로 그러한 취향이 어떻게 지금까지 이르러 연구자의 작품과 연관성을 갖는지 파악할 수 있으며 연구자 역시 이러한 정리를 통해 자신의 작품과 어떻게 유기적 공통점을 갖고 시각적으로 표현되는지 분석할 수 있었다. 이 논문에서 다뤄지는 연구자의 예전 작업들에 대한 예시는 줄곧 비슷한 감성으로 현재까지 그 맥락을 함께 하였기에 분명 중요하다고 판단되어 선택된 것이며 이는 앞으로 전개될 연구자의 작품 변화와 그 기반에 대한 기록과 정리로서 그 역할을 하게 될 것이다. 후회와 성장이라는 큰 제목에서 연구자는 과거 자신의 작업에서 그 흔적들을 찾아 자신이 좇던 것이 무엇인지를 파악하고 그와 연결 짓는다. 당시 왜 그러한 작업을 했는지에 대해 알 수 없었던 것을 연구자는 이번 연구를 통해 깨닫게 된다. 이러한 분석과 연구를 바탕으로 한 본 논문을 통해 연구자 자신은 물론, 작품을 접하는 이들 또한 연구자가 어떤 맥락으로 그러한 작품을 전개하였는지 그 내용과 의미를 파악할 수 있을 것이다.| This paper listed outcomes of study on evolution of content and formality, focusing on the works displayed in the master's degree exhibition named 'Should Have Done Better' in November, 2013. As the title of the exhibition, 'Should Have Done Better', says, an emotion of regret was implicated all over the displayed works. For researcher, an emotion of 'regret' is, to say, a foundation of 'growth'. A researcher's interest on emotion and a person who repeatedly regret and grow has been one of long maintained tastes. However, it hasn't been too long that researcher realized it. Researcher's works have maintained a consistent mood for a long time, however, it wasn't consciously committed with any intention. The process of deploying works was always carried out consistently by transferring enlarged drawings, a set of drawings, and a image selected among drawings, and during this process a researcher learned that the drawing was performed 'half-unconsciously', and realized that there was a emotional taste of the researcher on her unconsciousness. Through this paper, researcher analyzes the emotional taste which encompasses all over her works. The reason and meaning why a taste is important to researcher, the momentum to realize, and what it is will be identified, and provide examples. The research on overall works based on tastes is divided into content aspect and formal aspects, but it is emphasized in the content aspect than the formal one. What researcher wants to express through her works is a person who repeatedly regret and grow, and this is, as mentioned earlier, based on the researcher's emotional tastes which span all over her work. A taste, of course, affects the formal way to express this. However, the 'formal aspect' studied in this paper, is analyzed to be one way needed in the process of making a taste to a form or shape. Researcher's select the way to list her emotional tastes instead of explaining them in detail. Examples of taste with mutually understanding sensitivity are classified into contents and title, and they keep their own categories. Through these categories and the flow of their order, we can identify how the emotional taste is related to researcher's works, and the researcher could also analyze how her tastes have organically a commonality, and are expressed visually through this proposition. Under the big title of regret and growth, researcher finds the trace from her past works, and identify what she were seeking at that time, and make a connection to it. Through this study, researcher gets to realize what her didn't know as to why such a work was done at that time. The review of previous works discussed in this paper was carried out because it was judged to be important as a context of taste lasted continuously to present, and it will play a roll as a record and proposition on changes of researcher's future works and her foundation.
