Soft Sculpture의 유기적인 형태표현 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 전시 '감정세포Emotional cells'를 중심으로 한 본인의 작품연구논문이다. 부드러운 재료인 코팅 목장갑을 이용하여 감정을 가지고 있는 세포의 형태를 연구하였다. 코팅 목장갑이라는 오브제로써의 의미를 넘어 마티에르 자체로써 실제 생활에서의 실용적 기능과 의미를 상실하고, 재료의 질감과 색감만으로 재료의 사용에 있어 재료의 본질을 부각시키며 재료 자체의 고유성을 강조하였다. 본 연구는 세포가 감정을 가지고 있는 유기체로 보았으며, 이를 표현하기 위해 세포의 색감과 비슷한 코팅용 목장갑을 해체시킨 후 손바느질을 통해 재조합하여 세포의 형태를 제작하였다. 세포는 우리 몸의 가장 작은 단위로 분열(증식)을 하여 변화하며, 모든 감정도 그대로 머물러 있지 않고 변화한다. 이러한 세포와 감정의 변화를 유동적인 표현이 가능한 코팅 목장갑으로 다양한 세포의 형태를 참고하여 형태를 표현하였으며 이러한 변화, 움직임, 변형의 특성으로 Soft Sculpture 이론이 바탕이 되었다. 부드러운 재료의 사용과 전시 공간에서의 다양한 설치방식을 통해 관객이 작품을 유연하게 받아들이고 부드러운 질감으로 인한 촉각성으로 적극적인 참여를 유도하여 작품과 소통하는 데 목적이 있으며, 감정을 갖고 있는 몸의 세포 표현은 형태적으로 세포의 확장을 의미하며 나아가 세포(몸) 밖의 세상과 소통하고자 함을 의미한다. 이론적 배경에서 선행연구로는 감정과 세포의 유동적 형태 변화를 Soft Sculpture의 특성으로 연구하였다. 또한 감정 세포의 개념을 정의하고 감정세포로서의 형태표현을 분석하였다. 표현 방법에서는 마티에르, 바느질과 촉각성 그리고 다양한 설치방식을 분석하였다. 작품분석에서는 8점의 작품에 대한 표현 방법과 표현 내용을 분석하였다. 결론에서는 연구의 결과를 종합하여 '감정세포Emotional cells' 전시가 갖는 의미를 찾고, 부드러운 작품이 관람객에게 줄 수 있는 감정적 메시지에 대한 본인의 이론과 다양한 표현 방법의 결과를 정리하고, 앞으로 본인의 나아가야할 방향을 모색하고자 한다.

| This study aims to examine the work of the author focusing on an exhibition entitled 'Emotional Cells.’ The work is about the forms of emotional cells made of soft material gloves. Cotton work gloves for coating has lost practical functions and meanings in our daily lives, going beyond the meaning as an object as matiere. In this paper, I emphasized the nature of the material only with the texture and color sense of the material and the unique feature of the material itself. This paper saw cells as organism with emotion and to express this, disassembled cotton work gloves for coating similar with cells in the color sense and reassemble by needlework to make emotional cells. Cells change by being divided (multiplied) into the smallest units of our body, and all the emotions change, not stay. Using materials which can fluidly express cells and changes of emotions like this, I made forms, referring to a variety of forms of cells, and these changes, movements, and characteristics of variations laid the foundation for the Soft Sculpture theory. The use of soft materials and various installation methods for the exhibition are believed to allow the audience to accept the work flexibly, and the aim of using soft texture lied in eliciting active participation and helping communicate with the work. The expression of emotional cells of the body means the expansion of cells in terms of form and furthermore, the desire to communicate with the world outside cells (body). As a theoretic background, I conducted literature review in regards to flexible changes in forms of cells and emotions as characteristics of Soft Sculpture. I also defined the meaning of emotional cells and analyzed formative expression of emotional cells. In methodology of expression, I examined matiere, needlework and tactile features, and various installation methods. Eight works were analyzed in terms of expression methods and contents. From the findings from the study, we discussed what the exhibition ‘Emotional cells' meant, summarized the theory of the author about what kind of emotional message soft work delivers to the audience and the results of various expression methods, and explored the directions for the author.
