Roger Quilter의 가곡연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 영국 작곡가 퀼터(Roger Quilter 1877～1953)의 <Three Shakespeare Songs> Op.6(1905)에 대하여 연구 분석한 것이다. 퀼터는 그의 독특한 감성과 지성을 시 선택에 적용하여 창작하는 뛰어난 능력의 작곡가이며, 그의 작품에는 영국 전통의 낭만적인 취향이 나타난다. 이 작품은 퀼터의 전성기 때 작곡된 것으로, 가사는 그가 평생을 사랑했 던 셰익스피어의 시를 사용했다. 가사와 소리가 하나로 표현되는 퀼터의 음 악적 감각을 살려주었으며, 이것은 시인의 의도이상의 효과를 나타내었다. 엘리자베스 여왕시대의 유명한 시인이자 문학가인 셰익스피어는 풍부한 상 상력과, 뛰어난 언어표현으로 작품을 완성할 때마다 사람들로 하여금 심금 을 울리게 하였고, 이것은 영국과 다른 여러 나라의 가곡 작곡가들이 그의 시를 주제로 하여 작곡하는 역할을 하였다. 특히 이 작품은 하나의 그룹으로 연주되도록 고안되었는데 셰익스피어의 2기 작품 중 <Twelfth Night>의 2막에 나오는 노래에서 “Come away, death”, “O Mistress mine”, 그리고 <As You Like It>의 2막에 나오는 노래에서 “Blow, blow, thou winter wind”에서 구성된 세 곡이며, 사랑을 통한 고통, 설레임, 배반을 노래하는 내용들로 이루어졌다. 전체적으로 유절형식으로 이루어져 있고, 전주와 간주 coda 또는 codetta 를 가지고 있다. 퀼터의 피아노 반주는 대부분 당김음 리듬의 선율이며, 세 곡 모두 짧은 전주와 단순한 코드로 성악라인과의 대조를 이룬다. 보통의 모음집과는 달리 내용은 연결되어 있지 않으나, 조성의 관계조로 이루어져 세 곡 전체의 흐름이 하나의 통일성을 보여주며, 시와 음악이 동시에 돋보 이는 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 이론적 배경으로 작곡가 퀼터의 생애와 그의 음악적 특징, 가곡 작품을 알아보고, 퀼터가 사랑했던 시를 음악에 사용한 의미를 알아보 고자 시인인 셰익스피어의 생애와 작품세계를 연구 한 후, 작품 분석에 앞 서 작품 개요를 통한 곡의 내용과 흐름을 이해하고, 작품의 형식, 시의 구 조, 박자, 조성, 빠르기, 리듬, 반주형태 등을 분석하여 많은 연주자들이 곡 을 표현하는데 도움이 되고자 하였다.|This thesis is about a study and an analysis on 20th century British composer Roger Quilter's <Three Shakespeare Songs> Op.6. Quilter is a talented composer who applied his unique sensitivity and intelligence on choosing poems. In his works, traditional British romantic taste can be easily found. This work, which was written in Quilter's peak times, expressed Quilter's musical sensitivity by drawing out lyrics and musics into one single harmony. He used his most beloved poem written by Shakespeare and described more than what Shakespeare intended in the first place. Shakespeare was a famous poet who lived in Queen Elizabeth period. He used his rich imagination and talented linguistic ability when writing a poem and touched many people's heart. Shakespeare's work was a great material for many other composer's works besides England's. This work is especially designed to be played as a group of songs. It is formed by three songs which are "Come away, death" and "O Mistress mine" from 2nd act of <Twelfth Night> in Shakespeare's 2nd period work and "Blow, blow, thow winter wind" from 2nd act of <As you like it>. It is about pains, butterflies, and betrayals people experience through love. In general, it is formed by beautiful melodies and it has verses, preludes, bridge passages, and codas(or codetta). Quilter's piano play is mostly of syncopated rhythm melody and all three songs have short preludes and simple chords in contrast with vocal music field. Unlike the normal song cycle, it's contents are not connected but its relative keys and tonality from three songs make flow and finally completes this work. Its poetic and musical sides look better when it is together.
