Roger Quilter의 가곡 <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics> op.12에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 영국 작곡가 Roger Quilter(1877-1953)의 ＜Seven Elizabethan Lyrics＞ op.12(1908)에 대하여 연구한 것이다. Quilter는 시를 아름다운 선율로 이끌어내는 데 뛰어난 능력을 가지고 있는 작곡가이며, 그의 작품에서는 영국적이고 낭만적인 그의 취향이 나타난다. 이 작품은 Quilter의 전성기 때 완성된 것으로, 그의 언어적·음악적인 감각을 볼 수 있으며, 그가 많이 다루었던 엘리자베스Ⅰ세 시대의 시를 자신의 작품으로 옮겨 아름다운 음악으로 완성시켰다. 이 작품은 'Weep you no more', 'My life's delight', 'Damask roses', 'The faithless shepherdess', 'Brown is my love', 'By a fountainside', 'Fair house of joy'의 7곡으로 되어 있다. 두 곡은 Thomas Campion과 Ben Jonson의 시로 되어 있고, 나머지 다섯 곡의 시는 작자를 알 수 없으며, 자연과 더불어 사랑을 노래한 내용이 대부분이다. 전체적으로 변형 유절 형식으로 되어 있고, 박자와 조성, 음역의 변화는 크지 않다. 선율은 단순하나 반주가 선율과 함께 시를 잘 그려내고 있다. 7개의 곡들은 서로 내용상으로는 연관이 없지만, 박자와 빠르기가 긴밀하게 연결되어 하나의 작품을 이루며, 시에 의한 선율이 돋보이는 작품이라 하겠다.|This thesis is about the ＜Seven Elizabethan Lyrics＞ op.12(1908) of Roger Quilter(1877-1953). He was a British composer in the twentieth century who had the sense to draw a beautiful tunes from lyric poetry. His fondness that is romantic and British appears in his music. These songs were completed in Quilter's time of prosperity, and in this work his linguistic and romantic style can be seen. He completed beautiful music through Elizabethan lyric poetry which he utilized in most of his songs. This song-cycle consists of seven songs that are 'Weep you no more', 'My life's delight', 'Damask roses', 'The faithless shepherdess', 'Brown is my love', 'By a fountainside' and 'Fair house of joy'. Two poems of them were composed by Thomas Campion and Ben Jonson. The others are anonymous and poetry about singing love with nature. In general, it has modified strophic form, and low variation in time, key and musical range. In spite of the simple tune, the accompaniment describes well lyric poetry with the tune. There are no substantial connection between seven songs, but they are connected closely in tempo and time. These are the songs that has prominent tunes endowed by the poetry.
