논 문 개 요

닐스 개드(Niels Gade, 1817.02.22-1890.12.21)는 19세기 국민음악의 여명기에 있어 스칸디나비아 국민악파의 기초를 이룬 작곡가이다. 강한 민족적-국민적 정체성을 표현한 그의 작품에서 소박하고 쾌활한 스칸디나비아 민요를 사용하였음을 알 수 있으며 19세기 초 낭만주의 음악의 영향을 많이 받으면서도 자신의 민족적 색채를 작품에 표현한 작곡가로서 후대 국민음악의 태동에 큰 역할을 하였다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 닐스 개드는 덴마크 왕실 관현악단의 바이올리니스트였으며 오르가니스트, 지휘자등으로 여러 방면의 음악활동을 하였고 잘 알려지지 않았던 북유럽 음악이 세상의 주목을 받게 하는데에도 큰 역할을 하였다. 닐스 개드는 동시대에 살았던 펠릭스 멘델스존(Felix Mendelssohn. 1809.02.03-1847.11.04), 로버트 슈만(Robert Schumann 1810.06.08-1856.07.29)과 친분이 있었고 특히 멘델스존과는 라이프치히 유학시절 알게 되어 멘델스존 사후 그의 후임으로 라이프치히 음악원의 교수와 약 1년 동안 게반트하우스 관현악단의 지휘자로 있게 된다. 멘델스존과 슈만의 영향을 받아 전기 낭만적 음악 성격을 많이 가지고 있으며, 그의 제자이자 동료인 에드바르 그리그(Edvard Hagerup Grieg, 1843.06.15-1907.09.04)와 카를 닐센(Carl August Nielsen, 1865.06.09-1931.10.03)에게도 많은 영향을 줌으로써 후대의 스칸디나비아 음악가들의 선구자 역할을 하였다. 본 논문에서는 닐스 개드의 생애와 19세기 초 낭만주의 시대의 작곡기법을 설명하고 스칸디나비아 악파의 기초를 닦은 닐스 개드의 음악 어법과 연구 대상으로 정한 Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano Op.43 작품을 분석하려 한다.

Niels W. Gade Analysis of Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano Op.43

Niels Gade(1817-1890) is a composer who established the basis of nationalist school of the Scandinavian Peninsula in the dawning of nationalism in music in the 19th century. From his works expressing strong ethnic-national identity, it is found that Niels Gade used simple and cheerful Scandinavian folk songs, and as a composer expressing ethnical color in his works despite of huge influence from romanticism in the early 19th century, he played an enormous role in fetal movement of nationalism in music. Niels Gade worked as a violinist in the Danish Royal Orchestra, organist, and conductor, and he played a huge role to gain attention from the world for the unknown North European music. Niels Gade was a friend of Mendelssohn and Schumann, the musicians in the same period. Especially, he became a friend with Mendelssohn when he was studying in Leipzig, and later he became a teacher at the Leipzig Music Academy and a conductor of Gewandhaus Orchestra about an year as a successor to Mendelssohn. With influence from Mendelssohn and Schumann, he showed the character of early romanticism in his music, influenced his disciples and colleagues such as Edvard Hagerup Grieg(1843-1907) and Carl August Nielsen(1865-1931) and played an important role of pioneer of late Scandinavian musicians. This thesis is to introduce Niels Gade`s life and his classical melodic methodology in the early 19th century`s romanticism, and analyze the study object, Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano Op.43, to study exclusive musical expressive diction and role in musical history of him who mixed German romanticism with lyricism of North European and established the foundation of Scandinavian nationalist school.
