Le Grand Meaulnes에 나타난 공간과 인물의 양면성(l’ambivalence)

Abstract

Le Grand Meaulnes(1913)는 20세기 ‘누보로망’의 선구자로 평가되는 Alain-Fournier (본명 : Henri‐Alban Fournier, 1886‐1914)의 처녀작이자 유일한 작품으로 자전적 성향이 강한 작품이며 현실과 이상의 세계를 넘나드는 주인공 Augustin Meaulnes의 모험과 방황 그리고 사랑과 우정을 중심으로 여러 시점에서 이야기가 전개된다. 본 논문에서는 공간과 작중 여주인공인 Yvonne와 Valentine를 중심으로 등장인물이 지니고 있는 내면과 외면의 양면성을 살펴보고, 공간과 등장인물이 지니고 있는 양면성 중 내면에 잠재되어 있던 면이 외부로 표출되면서 나타나는 상호간의 영향력을 규명하는 것에 역점을 둔다. 본론의 제 1 부에서는 몽상의 공간인 신비의 영지와 현실의 공간인 Paris 그리고 몽상과 현실이 공존하는 공간인 Saint-Agathe에 잠재되어 있는 양면성을 살펴본다. 제 2 부에서는 작품의 여주인공이자 몽상의 세계와 현실의 세계를 대변하는 Yvonne와 Valentine를 중심으로 등장인물 간의 관계를 통해 나타나는 양면성을 살펴본다. 즉, Meaulnes에 의해 나타나는 Yvonne의 현실성과 Frantz에 의해 나타나는 Valentine의 몽상적 성향(rêverie)을 찾아 볼 것이다. 그 뿐만 아니라, 이 두 여인의 관계를 통해 나타나는 Meaulnes의 양면성을 살펴본다. 마지막으로 제 3 부에서는 공간과 인간은 서로에게 영향을 주고 받는다는 이론을 근거로 공간과 등장인물 간의 상관관계에서 나타나는 양면성을 살펴본다. 다시 말해, 몽상의 공간 안에서 현실적 인물에게 내재되어 있던 몽상의 성향이 나타나는 것과 현실적 인물이 몽상의 공간을 현실적 공간으로 전환시키는 영향력에 대한 분석을 통해 이들의 상관관계를 고찰해 보도록 한다. 따라서, 본 연구는 François Seurel, Augustin Meaulnes, Frantz de Galais와 작가와의 삼자 일체에 관한 기존의 연구에서 간과하고 있는 여주인공 Yvonne와 Valentine 그리고 공간이 지니고 있는 양면성을 중심으로 작품 안에서 이야기하는 몽상과 현실에 관해 검토한다. 또한, 이를 통해 Alain-Fournier는 작품 안에서 몽상과 현실의 조화의 중요성에 대해 이야기하려 했음을 규명한다.

| Le Grand Meaulnes (1913), the maiden and posthumous work of Alain‐Fournier (Real name: Henri‐Alban Fournier, 1886‐1914), considered a forerunner of 20th‐century Nouveau Roman, is known as a work strongly tinged with autobiographical character. The motif of this work is on the world of reality and ideal and the story is unfolded from many points of view focused on the heroine Augustine Meaulnes’ adventure, wandering, love and friendship. This thesis, with a focus on spaces and heroines of Yvonne and Valentine, investigates the ‘double‐sidedness’ of the character’s interior and exterior and how the aspects lying dormant inside the space and the character influenced each other in their exterior presentation. In the first part of the main subject, we look into the double‐sidedness latent in the three spaces of ‘secret territory’ for fantasy, ‘Paris’ for reality and ‘Saint‐Agathe’ for fantasy and reality, looking for their hidden sides relatively. In the second part, focused on Yvonne and Valentine, heroines of the work representing the worlds of fantasy and reality, we investigate the double‐sidedness of characters through their relationships ‐ Yvonne’s realistic nature represented by Meaulnes and her fantastic nature represented by Frantz. Besides, through the relations of these two women to Meaulnes, we will identify that both heroines also act as Meaulnes’ alter ego to represent her double‐sidedness just as Francois and Frantz did. Lastly, in the third part, based on the theory of space and man affecting each other, we look into the correlations of ambivalences of each space and character. These correlations will be considered via analysis on the transfer of the realistic person’s latent propensity for fantasy in the space of fantasy and his space of fantasy into realistic space. Therefore, this study, breaking from the existing research on a trinity of the author between Francois Seurel, Augustin Meaulnes and Frantz de Galais, reviews the fantasy and reality narrated in the work focused on the ambivalence of heroines Yvonne and valentine and spaces. Through this, we will make endeavor to verify that Alain‐Fournier was driving at the importance of harmony between fantasy and reality.
