Abstract

르 클레지오Le Clézio(1940~)는 현대문학의 가장 비밀스러운 인물 중 하나로, 산과 바다사이, 태양과 대지사이의 자발적 유배자로 살고 있으며 그의 신비로운 삶이 『사막Désert 1980』에 용해되어 있다고 르 피가로지는 전하고 있다. 그의 1980년에 출간된 르 클레지오의『사막』은 펜-카메라기법을 사용하여, 순수하며 객관적인 서술로, 작품 속에서 투명하고 시적인 문체를 드러내고 있다. 이러한 순수하고 객관적인 서술은 성경과 마찬가지로 작품을 읽는 독자가 생동감을 느끼게 해준다. 본 논문은『사막』을 분석 연구하여 르 클레지오가 가장 관심을 두고 있는 인간의 기원과 신으로의 회귀를 밝히는 데 그 목적을 둔다. 첫째, 작중인물의 순환적 삶을 통해서, 인간의 삶의 궁극적인 목적이 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 르 클레지오가 성경에 기초한 문체와 성경적인 이미지를 연결하여, 통과의례적인 측면과 함께, 인간의 한 근원을 탐색하고자 하였다. 1장에서는 순수한 공간으로서의 여정을 통해 공간이 지니는 순수함을 두 가지 특성으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 자연적인 요소만이 존재하기 때문에 느끼게 되는 순수함과 종교의례를 통해서 상징적으로 느끼게 되는 순수함을 통해서, 알아즈락과 마엘 아이닌, 누르의 삶을 조명해 보고, 이들 본연의 모습이 신성성을 지녔기 때문에, 신의 모습과 유사한 점을 밝혀 보았다. 그리고, 이들의 신성한 삶이 하나의 고리가 되어 여주인공 랄라의 삶에 관여함으로써, 랄라가 체험하는 신성한 삶과, 신성한 삶의 의미를 되새겨 보았다. 2장에서는 여주인공 랄라의 모습이 이국적인 도시에 대한 동경으로 인해 변하였고, 이국적인 도시는 문명의 아름다움에도 불구하고, 신이 부재한 곳임을 살펴보았다. 랄라는 시테에서의 생활이 주는 지루함을 벗어나 이국적인 도시의 정취와 이국 도시에서의 신화적인 삶을 꿈꾸며, 마르세이유로 향하지만, 그 속에서 발견하게 되는 것은 신의 부재로 인한 공허함이다. 이곳에서 세속화된 랄라를 뱀에게 유혹받은 하와의 모습과 대비하였다. 랄라가 추는 <춤>의 의미를 통과의례적인 측면으로 보아 정신적인 죽음을 거쳐 <정화된 인간> 즉, 새로운 인간으로의 탄생의 목적으로 보았다. 이와 같이 랄라의 이원적 삶의 모습을 통해 인간의 본질적인 가치에 대한 존재의미를 고찰하였다. 3장에서는 회귀적 공간으로서의 여정이라는 주제 하에, 랄라의 자아탐색의 과정과 <순환적 삶>의 모습을 살펴봄으로써, 인간은 신의 창조행위를 모방하는 존재이며, 신을 모방함으로써, 신의 영역에 들어갈 수 있음을 밝혔다. 인간의 궁극적인 목적을 달성하기 위해, 신의 존재를 긍정하며, 신에게 귀의 한다면, 인간은 영원한 우주 속으로 들어가서, 태초의 불멸성을 지닌 인간이 되고, 회귀적 공간의 여정을 통해 통과의례로써 완성된 새로운 인간이 되며, 결국 성경에서 말하는 천국에 들어가는 자가 된다. 결론적으로 본 논문을 통해 우리는 『사막』에 나타난 순수한 공간, 세속적 공간, 회귀적 공간으로 나누어 성스러운 이미지를 고찰해 봄으로써, 작중인물의 삶의 변모과정을 분석할 수 있었으며, 본연의 삶에 충실했던 순수한 인간, 삶의 방향을 잃어버린 세속적인 인간, 삶의 방향을 수정하려는 회귀적 인간의 모습을 발견하였다. 따라서, 작품 속에 나타나는 현대 문명사회가 만들어낸 다른 신, 즉 <돈>에 대한 숭배는 다 헛된 것이며, 주인공이 신의 존재를 긍정함으로 인해, 영과 육과 혼이 합일이 되어, 신의 경지에 이르게 된다는 작가의 의도를 규명할 수 있었다.|Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio (1940~) is a secretive figure in modern literature, living in a self-imposed exile between the sun and earth. Le Figaro once suggested that a reader can catch glimpses of Le Clézio's mysterious life in his work Désert. Published in 1980, Désert applies a pen-camera method to create a pure and objective narrative with a visual and transparent style. This pure and objective narrative style, echoing that of the Bible, gives the reader an immediate sense of action. This study analyzes Désert for ideas concerning the origin of man and the return to God, which are Le Clézio's central themes. First, through the cyclic life of the main character, the ultimate purpose of life is examined. Second, Le Clézio explores one belief concerning the origins of man not only by connecting biblical images with the written style of the Bible but also by bringing forth aspects of initiation. The first part of the thesis explores the purity of space by means of viewing journey as a pure space in itself and by pointing out two main characteristics. Al Azraq's, Ma el Aïnine's, and Nour's lives are examined within the purity, which is maintained in a state of nature untouched by any artifice and sustained by a symbolic purity experienced in religious rituals. Based upon the characters' fundamental sacred self identities, we witness a resemblance to God. This association with holiness serves as a common bond that enables the characters to venture into Lalla's life, thereby enabling Lalla to experience spirituality and look back on the true and divine meaning of life. The second part of the thesis focuses on how Lalla has changed through her yearning for the exotic city. However, regardless of the beauty of civilization, it proves to be a place empty of God. Lalla not only wants to leave the boredom of her life and but also dreams of the glamour of the exotic city and its mythical life. Although Lalla succeeds in reaching Marseille, all she finds there is the meaninglessness of having no God. This secularized Lalla is juxtaposed with the biblical image of Eve tempted by the serpent. Lalla, then, undergoes an initiation <dance> ceremony, which symbolizes the death of the mind, in order to be reborn as a <purified person>. This comparison of Lalla's two lives serves as a contemplation of our fundamental human values. The third part of this thesis deals with the journey as a regressive space in itself and, finally, Lalla's search for herself and <the cyclic life> are scrutinized. Man imitates God through creative acts, and thus can enter the realm of God. If man, in order to attain the ultimate purpose of life, acknowledges and returns to God, which would mean returning to the original form as an immortal being through the completion of initiation rites within the regressive space that is journey, then, man can enter that everlasting space called heaven, which is described in the Bible. In conclusion, this study analyzes Désert as a pure space, secular space, and regressive space in connection with biblical images and, further, follows the changes in the different lives of the characters: through the pure character who was faithful to the fundamental purpose of life; through the secular character who lost direction; and, through the regressive character who tries to return to the true path. As exemplified by the writer, <money> is not only criticized as the other god created by modern civilization but also equated to meaningless worship. In the end, the main character successfully affirms his belief in God and unifies both body and soul; therefore, the characters is able to transcend to the level of God.
