Abstract

Henry Purcell(1659-1695)은 바로크 시대 영국 작곡가의 대표적인 인물이다. 그는 Chapel Royal의 소년가수를 거쳐 Westminster Abbey와 Chapel Royal의 오르가니스트 겸 작곡가로 일했다. 그의 대부분의 음악이 궁정에 관계된 것이었지만 여러 장르에 걸쳐서 많은 작품을 남겼다. 왕실 전속 음악가로서 앤덤, 합창과 관현악을 위한 송가(ode), 칸타타, 독창곡, 오르간 음악, 기악음악, 건반악기곡 등을 작곡하였다. 생애 마지막 5년 동안에 작곡한 40곡이 넘는 극음악이 남아있기도 하다. Henry Playford가 1698년에 Orpheus Britannicus의 첫번째 판을 출판했는데 그는 "작가의 탁월한 재능은 모든 종류의 음악에서 충분히 드러나지만, 특별히 영어 단어의 힘을 표현하는데 특별한 재능을 성악곡에서 보여준다" 고 밝히고 있다. 정치와 종교가 밀접하게 얽혀있었던 16세기와 17세기 영국교회는 국교회(성공회)와 청교도의 갈등이 있었다. 그들의 분열은 사회와 문화뿐만 아니라 음악에도 많은 영향을 주었다. 또한 1660(왕정복고시대)이후 이탈리아와 프랑스의 음악이 받아 들여 지면서 영국음악에 새로운 변화가 일어나게 되는 시기였다. 그 당시 영국궁정은 음악의 주요무대였는데 17세기말에 이르러서 점차 음악의 중심지로써의 지배력을 잃게 되었다. 또한 교회음악에서도 예배용 의전 음악이 아니라 성서의 시편이나 개인의 경건한 노래가 점차 일반 콘서트 홀이나 집에서 공공연하게 노래 불려졌다. Harmonia sacra는 이러한 17세기 후반의 영국 문화와 신학, 그리고 음악에 대한 변화가 많이 나타나는 것이다. 본 논문은 퍼셀이 편집한 Harmonia sacra에 관한 연구인데 1688년과 1693년에 Volume Ⅰ, Ⅱ로 출판되었다. 본론에서는 첫째 퍼셀의 생애와 작품세계에 대해서 알아보았다. 두 번째는 17세기 영국의 종교적, 사회적 배경을 통해서 Harmonia sacra의 작곡배경과 이해를 돕고자 한다. 바로크 음악은 대부분 통주저음에 의한 즉흥연주로 이해되는데 퍼셀의 가곡을 세 개의 다른 에디션을 비교하면서 퍼셀 음악의 연주에 있어서 다양한 가능성을 제시하였다. 마지막으로 총29곡 중 퍼셀의 독창곡 4곡 "An Evening Hymn", "The Blessed Virgin's expostulation", "We sing to Him"과 "Lord, what is man" 에 대해서 알아보았다. 시의 해석과 멜로디와의 연관성을 먼저 제시하였는데 곡의 분석에 있어서는 음악적-수사학적 모형을 중심으로 연구하였다. 형식과 화성, 그리고 반주와의 관계 등을 세 개의 다른 에디션을 중심으로 비교 분석하였다.|Henry Purcell (1659-1695) was a representative English composer of the Baroque period. He was a child of the Chapel Royal, and held many positions, such as organist, singer, and composer of the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. Most of Purcell's works were composed for the royal court, but he composed in many different styles and genres of music. As a musician of the court, he composed anthems, odes, cantatas, works for solo voice, organ, various instruments, harpsichord, etc. Purcell also composed many works for the theater in the last five years of his life. When Henry Playford published the first volume of Orpheus Britannicus in 1698, he wrote, 'The Author' s extraordinary Talent in all sorts of Music is sufficiently known, but he was especially admired for the Vocal, having a peculiar Genius to express the Passions of all his Auditors'. While politics and religion were closed in England, one of the basic divisions within the church in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was between Puritans and Anglicans. They influenced not only the church, but English society, culture and music. English music showed changes due to French and Italian influence after 1660,(the year of the Restoration). The court began to lose its dominance as a center for musical entertainment at the end of seventeenth century. Not liturgical music but psalms and devotional songs were sung by all classes of English society, in public and at home. Harmonia sacra appeared as a means of private devotional expression and for public concerts, revealing much about late seventeenth century English culture, theology, and music. This thesis is written about Purcell's edition of the volume Harmonia Sacra in 1688. First, Purcell's life and works are introduced. Second, because it is necessary to understand the background of Harmonia Sacra with musical and religious knowledge of England in the seventeenth century, these are considered next. Harmonia Sacra reflected many changes occurring in England during this period. Since many of Purcell's songs had figured bass with the melody, realizations vary from edition to edition. This thesis compares the realizations of "The Purcell Society" , "Sergius Kagen" and "Benjamin Britten" editions. Last, among the twenty-nine pieces of Harmonia Sacra, four only are by Purcell. They are "An Evening Hymn" , "The Blessed Virgin's expostulation", "We sing to Him" and "Lord, what is man". These vocal solos have been analyzed with regard to their form, lyrics, melody, harmony and accompaniment.
