Abstract

F. Chopin(1810-1849) is the first composer to write ballades for piano. From 1831 to 1842, Chopin wrote four ballades inspired by four poems of a Polish post, Adam Mickiewicz(1798-1855): no.1 was influenced by Konrad Valenrod, no.2 was by The Lake of the Wills, no.3 was by L'Ondine, no.4 was by The Three Brothers Burdrys. When Ballade No. 1, published in 1836, was titled as Ballade ohne Worte, Chopin implied his intention to transfer the characteristics of the poem to piano music, and it attracted the attention of the musical circle. However, the detailed programatic description was not the goal of the composition, and the general impression of the poem is freely expressed in music. This thesis is concentraed on the study of Ballade No. 1, Op.23. Although Ballade No1. in g minor, Op.23 is the most similar form of sonatas, the second theme comes first in the recapitulation with irregular phrase lengths, so it is called 'Variations on a sonata'. The characteristics of melody are the chromatic-scale of tuneful progress, ornaments, progression and impromptu music elements. In addition, Chopin often uses beautiful and lyrical melodies from bel canto Opera, with decorative melodies for main melody. A feature of the harmony is that the 7th & 9th chords turned into the form of arpeggio on melody. Also, they use discord, progressing chromatic scale, enharmonic and chromatic-scale progressing of the 12 scales. In the rhythm, he uses an agogic accent, which is providing a change with a strict tempo or rhythm, it also diversifies with complex rhythm and give a sense of tension by using commas.
