Dominick Argento 의 [Six Elizabethan Songs]에 관한 반주 연구

Abstract

Dominick Argento(1927~)는 20C 미국 음악을 대표하는 작곡가로 국제적으로 인정받는 현대 작곡가들 중 가장 뛰어난 현존하는 작곡가이다. 아르젠토는 미국의 서정적인 오페라를 주도하고 있으며 기악곡보다는 성악곡에 대한 끊임없는 관심과 해박한 지식으로 주요 작품들 역시 성악곡을 많이 남겼다. 그의 성악작품의 특성은 문학작품과 연가곡의 형식의 곡들을 많이 연계하여 작곡을 함으로써 문학과 음악의 조화를 잘 이루었다는 것이다. 엘리자베스 시대의 6개의 노래 [Six Elizabethan Songs]는 아르젠토의 가곡 중 가장 많이 연주되어지는 작품 중 하나이다. 이 곡은 16~17세기에 활동한 5명의 영국 작가들의 문학 작품 중 6개의 시를 발췌하여 작곡하였으며 각각의 곡들은 연관성이 없지만 전통적인 기법을 바탕으로 현대적인 요소들을 결합시켜 아르젠토만의 작곡기법을 여실히 보여주고 있는 곡이다. [Six Elizabethan Songs]는 두 가지 버전으로 작곡되었으며 첫 번째는 1957년에 Solo Voice와 피아노 반주를 위하여, 두 번째는 1962년에 소프라노인 그의 아내를 위해 바로크 앙상블 반주로 편곡 되었다. 본 논문에서는 이 연가곡의 배경이 되는 엘리자베스 1세 시대의 사회적 배경, 음악, 문학에 대해 간략히 알아보고, 각 곡에 있어서 나타나는 아르젠토의 음악적 특징을 시와 음악, 노래와 피아노 반주와의 관계를 중심으로 연구 분석하였다.|Dominick Argento(1927~) is one of the most outstanding American composers of 20th century and he is internationally well-known composer as well. He led the lyricism of American opera and left a lot of major works in vocal music rather than in instrumental music with profound knowledge and interest. Looking into the characteristics of his vocal works, by composing many song cycle forms with literature in conjunction, he gained a remarkable reputation for good harmony in literature and music. The song cycle, [Six Elizabethan Songs] is one of the most frequently performed works among his song. This cycle was inspired by six poems extracted from literary works of 5 famous English writers who were active during 16~17c. Though each song has no relevance, these songs show well enough Argento's own compositional techniques that combined modern muisic based on traditional techniques. [Six Elizabethan Songs] was written into two versions. First one was composed for Solo Voice and piano in 1957 and the second one was written in Baroque ensemble in 1962, for his wife who was a soprano. In this thesis, I studied social background, music and literature of Elizabeth 1st era and I also researched the relation among Argento's musical characteristics expressed on each song in relation of not only poetry and music but also vocal line and piano accompaniment.
